Based on so many positive reviews and "love's" I bought it without smelling it(will NEVER do that again!). To me it's a nauseating, stingy sweet tobacco smell, positively "cheap". Utterly disappointing. Had to go scrub it off after 10 mins. I can't understand why it's called "balmy, like a fresh oily bath ...."!

Sexy, sweet, summer warm and beautifull, reminds me hot sand with the smell of sweet wood of pinia trees, maybe something from the previous summer adventures... I have it on my hand and cannot get enough of it. It lasts for long time and it is the one for me now, at the end of summmer time.

I agree with Saramariah, it also reminds me strongly of Shalimar which I love. Powdery, soft and warm, just wonderful.

Opening - pickled plums, or plum brandy? (yum!), then beautiful smooth clean smell of oily bath. Very nice. Too bad i discovered this 80`s retro 20 years later, due to the brown color, that was scaring me (Beautiful, Gio and that sort or hard core scents)

Powdery, warm, close to the skin. This is a classic. Front row in the range of powdery fragrances.

i absolutely hated this one. when i first tried, it reminded me on a granny who hasn't showered for month. every one around me loves it, even my boyfriend thinks it smells good. so i tried again after years and i have to admit that the granny feeling is gone, but i still don't like it. on my workmade it even smells ok, but it just does not work for me!

A sweet friend send me some misterious samples, where she put only numbers on each one, so i should try them without knowing what i was wearing. This one was the first one i picked to wear. Altought it was launched in 1989, it's modern until today.Without knowing the notes or the family, my impression was of a scent that starts subtle citrusy. The citrus light phase only last for five minutes, when the scent moves to a almond-flower like heart to me. I got very impressed that this one doesn't have almond flowers, because it's what i get - a flower bitter aroma of almond, that transform into something sugared, where you have a grassy lily to cut the swetness. After some hours, the scent dives into a cozy tonka-vanilla base, sweet and pleasant like an embrace. Shame that this one was discontinued, it's a great fragrance, with some distant similarties to Champs Elysees

To me "Le Bain" is that invisible full metal jacket which is always there for me.
Uplifting, re-assuring, fresh and velvety: time to re-assemble yourself for a nice change of scenery, clothing and/or company!

I red in a review for Naomi Campbells Mystery that this one smells just like it, so I have bought a bottle blindly on the net since M is one of my absolute favourite perfumes, but since it´s discontinued its impossible to find and I only have half a bottle left, so now im keeping my fingers crossed for this one..

So i got my bottle of Joop today and i can see the similarity between them definately, though Joop is a bit sweeter with almost a hint of honey, and it reminds me more of Shalimar, while Mystery to my nose is more spicy warm, so M is still my favourite for sure!

A typical Joop! I can smell the plums in it. Over time it gets stronger and sweet, a delicious perfume, different.

I admit to myself that I had preconceived ideas about this perfume. Created my own idea of how it would smell. Picked parts from the reviews and thought that it was quite clear to me how it would smell and that I would love it from the start. It was not that simple. When I received the perfume I opened the package expectantly and sprayed. Widened my nostrils and inhaled it deeply, but it was nothing like I expected! It took nearly a week for me to decide if I liked the scent or not. To my delight, it has grown every day. Now I feel that this was a very, very good buy. Pistacchio (yes!), steam from the shower, gourmand vanilla, woody notes and almonds (tonkabeans of course) in the base that completes and fullfill the creation. It is so special and therefore I highly recommend that you try it before grabbing a full bottle.
To my nose this is a wonderful fragrance...
(...and- of course-discontinued).
I am so happy to own this little gem.

24.7.2010 edit:
Recently I was making three cups of tea: fruit one (wild cherry) for my husband, for my mother vanilla and for me Earl Grey (Bergamot) and I was thinking "who the hell is using my Le Bain right now, it is my daughter?"- I realized the all three scents of tea were making amazing scent of Le bain... once again: I love it!

My everlasting love since more than 12 years. I can´t understand how anybody doesn´t like this scent. Even in summertime I can wear it without feeling beaten by this fragrance.

It´s my personal all-time favourite, I can´t live without it.

I was angry at first that I haven't bought it on airport and then I couldn't find it on-line.
But now I've found it in drugstore, there are 4 pcs left...
I'm gonna buy it because it's the most unusual scent I've ever smelled and I adore it. Rich, warm, to me green and powdery at same time...amazing scent...vanilla but not sweet...mmm. Staying power exellent.

Reading the reviews and re-remembering this one I wouldn't hesitate buying it again. It is a bit like the original Joop which is very oily and ambery, but more gentle and enriched with heaps of talkum powder which makes it so powdery you almost want to cough. Like oat flakes with milk and honey turned into a powder.

Mmmmmh!

I tested this perfume at least 20 times. Nearly each time I went shopping. It reminded me of cocktail cherries and marzipan, so I was unsure if it was not too sweet. I asked certain friends who said they liked it and finally got it. It's just perfect, my favorite perfume for now.
Unusual and alluring without revealing any intention.

I think that's what they call being a classic.
How incredible it is, to create a fragrance, that still gives the same impression and feelings to people after 20 years and it may actually compete with the perfumes of today.
Le Bain is a soft, warm and feminine success of Joop. Respect.

In the early 1990s this was the perfume of choice for young women turning young men's heads.

It smells so beautifully feminine, I wonder what Patrick Süskind thinks of it, if you know what I mean...

This is absolutely unique and unreplaceable scent. So strong yet fabulously luxurious... warm and rich. I tried many many perfumes, but not once discovered something like Le bain.

I consider this one to be an unusual and special scent.I have not smelled a similar scent yet which is a good thing I think as a lot of perfumes on the market are so much similar. It is very fresh but also warm and soft. I get the the citrus and the cedar notes claerly and also the smooth vanilla dry down. This is one of the few fragrances I would consider wearing all year. Also it has a quite good lasting power on me combined with the shower gel and the bodylotion.

What a wonderful perfume!!!! It is going to become my signature scent, that's how much I fell in love with it... :))) Anyway, here it is:
1. Staying power: great, lasts forever.
2. Smells like: sweet, fragrant steam. A bit sweet, but not overpowering, with clean, bright citrus notes. On drydown, I sense vanilla on top of the above mentioned, as well as tea, redbush tea.. Not a powdery drydown, more like a fresh oriental one.
3. Sillage: wonderful, this perfume envelopes you like an aura and leaves a gorgeous trail behind. Definitely one that will get you noticed, but it's not loud as in vulgar. It is sophisticated, chic, unusual and feminine.

nauticaa's metaphor as a luxorious warm and steamy bathroom is totally right, i have the same associations. thinking of a big bathroom with black and white checkered floor and old-fashioned freestanding bathtube in the middle, all around golden mountings. reminds me of creme brulee, too. someway french. but not too sweet or too gourmand. more like a creamy bathing oil with milk and honey. someway sexy, but also clean.
good everyday fragrance for autumn, winter and early spring. staying power is super!

My present favorite. I got it this autumn while visiting Vienna, so I might be biased... It is a soft and warm perfume. Not so sweet to nauseate you, but feminine ans somehow clean. Joop intended to evoke a luxurious bath and indeed I can "see" steam all over and big mirrors. It first smells like a sweet desert-but i can't say what. Something with pistracchio...This top note doesn 't last too much, an there lingers a floral but not too frilly -girlie aroma.
The perfume lasts for several hours, so the price is also right for me.
