Kristiansand is a new masculine fragrance that combines two different ambiences - the serene winter atmosphere of the Norwegian town Kristiansand and the urban lifestyle of New York. The perfume was designed by two Norwegians who met in New York. Britt Hovde Ross and actress Elisabth Steen wanted to create a new masculine fragrance, as there are so few out there that they really like. Perfumer Pierre Constantin Gueros from Drom Fragrances helped them develop the composition.
New York is embodied with sophisticated powdery notes, musk and amber, while Kristiansand is described with wood, spice and green flavors.
The composition opens with crisp green notes, exotic spices (raw pepper and nutmeg) and mandarin. White lavender and clary sage are in the heart along with woody notes of cedar and vetiver, placed on the creamy base of musk, tonka bean, oak moss and golden amber.
It is available as 50 ml Eau de Cologne. Kristiansand was launched in 2010.

I purchased Kristiansand to mourn the loss of our dearly beloved, gone too soon, friend (yes it was closer to me than some actual family members) 'By Dolce&Gabbana', which as you well know is out of production, but can still be found on eBay, offered by a select few sellers who have the real thing (choose wisely, I have tips to spot fakes if you're still ISO).
Anyway... 'Kris' is not 'By' in its afterlife, or as some have said, the new 'By'. Calling it this would not only be incorrect, but in my book, blasphemy, because 'By' is truly part of my 'Fragrance Holy Trinity'. 'Kris' is like a half brother to 'By'. It does have many familiar traits, but also those of a different mother. For me, she would be 'L'Eau Bleu d'Issey Eau Fraiche', especially on its initial application. But when its fresh (green) top notes burn off, its ready for business, and the panty-dropper has officially entered the building!
Its drydown is not as heavy as that of 'By', so it will work a bit better in the summer. Formidable in its own right through and through, it gets a 9/10 on my scale. The bottom line is: pick up a bottle, spray it on, go nuts, no one will really know or care that it isn't 'By D&G'. Besides if/when you do finally find that authentic 100mL bottle of 'By' on eBay, it's gonna cost you about $250-$300 USD ($75 when in production, so sad).
I also see comparisons to '1725 Histoires de Parfums'. Does anyone have it, and if so what's your take on its similarities to 'Kris' and 'By'?
So, the question everyone wants to know...does this smell like D&G By Man? To me, Kristiansand slightly resembles By, but it doesn't have the intoxicating thick drydown that By has. I find it even muskier than By, but some of the spices come close. Is this a substitute? Absolutely NOT. This is about as close to By as Scott McClintock is...both have pieces of it, but neither comes close to matching the discontinued scent.
On its own, Kristiansand has some appealing points, and had I never smelled By, I might be attracted to this on its own merit. It is a very nice aromatic musk fragrance with some amber and tonka to sweeten up the spices. Very nice. I am tempted to call this By Light. No disrespect to the Kristiansand crew...in fact, since By is one of my favorite frags, that is a compliment.
I concur with Britt and Elisabeth in that there are not that many interesting men's fragrances. Glad they decided to give it a try. For that, bravo!
I came across this scent from a sample which turned me off by the cover of a bare chested man. Did not bode well. To macho and...
Nice and crisp start with green notes and mandarin. The vetiver is subdued but there in the middle. The musk and amber give it a slightly sweet finsh.
Sillage is nice and the longebvity is above average.
After living with it I give it a thumbs up. Not a classic but a worthwile frag to add to one's collection (priced right at about $65).
I've tried it on my hand one afternoon and it lasted through several handwash and a shower to the next day. So I would say it lasts a long time. Didn't smell a lot of the green notes but the musk and the lavender was there. Very nice.
I've never smelled By, but I can't really say that this is something worth going nuts over. It's a woody-spicy-peppery fragrance with a powdery rosewood and nutmeg smell. I know I've smelled this before, I just can't recall which exact fragrance. Decent longevity.
I read that this perfume is similar to BY - D&G (which is not producing now. So please, I need more informations. How many hours last on the skin? ...
