There was a meeting of the gods who decided that there would be a competition of Olympian magnitude in which the quest to make the most powerful perfume for men would take place on earth. This competition was to be spread over time, and the gods decreed it that contenders would have multiple attempts at this olfactory alchemy over the course a decade.
This decade we now know to be the 1980s.
Many mortals partook of this competition and the way of Kouros ignited the way forward: an aromatic fougere of unbelievable substance that looked like the clear, early winner. Others followed: Antaeus, a heavyweight woody chypre; Xeryus, a virile aromatic fougere that crushed opposition with its spicey musculature. Zino, a variation on the fougere theme bullied opponents into submission with its sandalwood base; Lapidus: a huge rich woody contender of such stamina...and then towards the end of the competition, a second offering to the gods was made by the House of Krizia. Their creation was called 'Moods' and, but for the wearisome nature of the gods at the end of the competition, he might have won.
Sadly, the gods had become languid in mood and, despite the fact that he was in possesion of everything the gods desired, he failed to impress.
His forte was 'wood' rather than fougere and he possessed an Herculean entrance of spicey/floral note, followed by a breath-taking rush of sustained woody notes that have not been seen since except, perhaps, in the hands of the one who today conjures magic in the House of Serge Lutens.
The fate of 'Moods', ironically, was to fall out of favour with the mood of the gods in that twilight of the 1980s who, by then, desired something different, and thus 'Moods' retired, defeated, and almost unheard of.
Years later in 2009, however, one of the god's messengers left me an old bottle of this combatant and, whilst the overall winner of the contest was left by the gods to be decided by the mortals, I knew from that first spray that I had been touched by the 'real' winner of this forgotten contest, despite the mood of the gods and that of the polis all those years ago.
To be continued...

Getting past the initial blast takes time, at least 30 minutes for me. The Aldehydes help make the opening incredibly sharp for a long time after applying it. When it settles down there is a very strong floral accord with Carnation being the dominant flower. There is a sweet Lily-of-the-Valley note second to the Carnation, and the other flowers are supporting notes. Backing the florals is a spicy Ginger that gives it a light sweetness.
The Patchouli is so strong in the base that it is hard to smell anything else coming from there at first. The Patchouli is very spicy and it's not until later in the dry down that it softens and sweetens up with some Tonka, Vanilla, and Amber. After about 5 hours it is a light woody scent that still has a floral touch.
Moods squeezes into the 80's powerhouse scent category, but it's a very unusual one. For me it's an acquired taste, for occasional use, that I like a bit more each time I wear it.
