Mechant Loup or An Angry Wolf (Big Bad Wolf on L'Artisan parfumeur's site for US) is a woody spicy composition that includes hazelnut, honey, sandalwood, cedar, licorice and myrrh.
See more in the article My Tender and Affectionate Beast Mechant Loup was launched in 1997.
I don't smell much licorice in this, but I do get a whiff of hazelnuts, and it's very subtle. So subtle that it doesn't steal the show from what's really the showcase here: sandalwood and cedar. Rather, the nuts enhance the wood notes, give them a summery freshness so they don't smell like sawdust, and provide just a touch of sweetness without being heavy. I don't like sweet scents, but I love this, so that should tell you something.
This is truly unique and wonderful. I don't know why this is called Mechant Loup ("Bad Wolf" in French), because this is a happy scent, not an animalic stink bomb. It's one of the most distinctive wood fragrances I've ever smelled, with a lightness to it that gives it a sort of Acqua di Parma-like Mediterranean feel, a quality you rarely find in wood fragrances.
MY RATING: 9/10
this reminds me of vintage Chanel Egoiste, only this is a little smokier.
I actually do love this even though I havent worn it that much to be in this state.lol
Definitely it's a male fragrance. Unfortunately it's not unique, quite typical for the type of quite sweet man fragrances, I mean after the couple tests I think smth like "I've smelled that before".
one of the best fragrance I had. complex and very seductive, no end to it - it will seduce and mesmerize you at the same time. at the same time it is warm and comforting.
As a young woman, I was drawn to this fragrance. I did not care if it was for men, but I bought it and wore it everyday.
There were other women who would compliment me on the scent and when I told them it was a man's scent, they were surprised.
My taste has changed since then, but it is still a very sexy scent and if my boyfriend wore it, man oh man.
It is an fall/winter scent that is very warm. 10 years later, I will admit that it is clearly masculine, but whatever! I also did the same with Creed's Silver Mountain Water....another masculine scent, but I wore it and loved it until I grew out of it.
I gave this a second wearing today. For the first few hours, there is a lack of balance for me, with too much of the rubbery anisic/licorice quality. After that, however, it becomes more of an anisic wood, which is much more pleasant. It's light but has good longevity, and has no flaws. However, it isn't especially complex, so you either like it or you don't, I'd guess. I'm not sure if I like this enough to want a bottle of it, but I think it's worth a third wearing at some point over the next few months. Far into the drydown, it is at its finest, with a slightly powdery quality. I don't get any "wet dog" from this, as LT calls it.
First wearing: I wore the original Jaguar yesterday and then this one today. I find that the gourmand element in Jaguar is very similar to the gourmand aspects of ML, though I don't know if there were reformulations of Jaguar that don't have this quality. Since I have a big bottle of Jaguar I don't see a reason to try and acquire a bottle of ML, but it's certainly good if that's what you are seeking. Of course, if you complain about the price I'm not going to criticize you !
I can't agree with the 'Chinese Tortoise Jelly' smell more, I actually laughed.
It also reminds me of the smell of Chinese medicine shop, and one kind of Chinese herbal drink, ' Licorice Tea'. If I wear this fragrance I think friends would ask me if I just went to the medicine shop or something, haha.. Anyway, I do love this fragrance. ;)
i don't have and think will not want to buy this one, every time i try it on it reminds me of the Chinese Tortoise Jelly, i think it is the herb smell in this one. And when i check the ingredience of Tortoise Jelly, the spotlight ingredience is "Wolfiporia extensa". Wolfiporia and Big bad wolf, now I don't think this is a coincident haha.
For some reason, this doesn't remind me of a forest at all. For one, it doesn't have even a hint of pine, which is what I've associated forests with. But it has the most wonderful honey and hazelnut note I've ever smelled (and I'm not even a honey lover). I fell in love with this scent from the first spray. After two samples I just had to get a bottle.
The opening (10-15 minutes) is not good on me; for some strange reason, I smell egg on my skin! Fortunately, this fades very quickly and all I'm left with is the honey and hazelnut with a little bit of licorice. It's fresh, it's uplifting and I especially love wearing it in spring or summer. It is mostly a masculine scent, but not one that a woman can't wear. While certainly not a perfume I'd put on a date or romantic dinner, I find it works great for work or outdoor activities.
Lasting power on me is very good, up to 8-10 hours, but then I don't have problem with most L'Artisan perfumes as others do. It's their sillage that usually doesn't work for me, but in this case, even that is not so bad. It's quite strong for the first 2-3 hours and then stays closer to skin; but then don't most perfumes do the same? I just love smelling my wrist while wearing it. It makes me feel clean, refreshed and kind of mysterious at the same time:)
Spray it, and suddenly you're in a forest. It's both a real and an enchanted one. As you turn around you see the trees, the musks, the flowers, the leaves. And then, all of a sudden, you realize there's a wolf somewhere, looking at you, not at all hostile, just curious.
It's a perfume for magical meetings. It lets you know that it's still possible to marvel.
A masterpiece.
Goes on spicy but then loses the spice kick once I start to smell the hazelnuts and wood notes. I also get a lot of licorice in this one. Its a rich, deep scent that is quite dry and masculine. Its a nice creation, but I wouldnt spring for a bottle. I find it can be annoying at times to wear, like Mellyhelly had mentioned.
I do feel a bit like Gretel or Little Red Riding Hood--or perhaps one of the three little perfume piglets--lost in a thicket of trees with no way to escape as the scent of L'Artisan Parfumeur MECHANT LOUP envelops me. Strong, dark, and insistent, this fragrance is only for gents who wear their scents with pride.
Don't ask me how myrrh, licorice, hazelnut, sandalwood and cedar notes combine here magically to re-create the aura of a forest, but they do! Some of the trees have been felled, so green and brown leaves and needles, along with freshly exposed wood are all represented in this composition. An invigorating and formidable force to be reckoned with--or else!
This dark and spicy creation has excellent longevity, but I suspect that the sillage might be too much for some--certainly no need for wrist sniffing to remind the wearer of its presence! The drydown seems a tad on the masculine side, but I wouldn't mind smelling this again--now and then.
I was quite impressed but this scent the minute I smelled it a few years ago. I don't usually wear this type of scents on myself because I feel them too dry and masculin, but I thought it could make a good pair with La Chasse aux Papillons: the bad wolf and Little Red Hook together!
I had a vial of Mechant Loup and used it up, but by the end of the vial I grew annoyed by it. Too dry and cloying, too bitter and the hazelnut killing my brain.
I felt the same with La Chasse especially the EdT version has a bitter cold edge among the triumphant flowers.
One day I will try ML again and maybe give it to my bf!
Had this lovely stuff. I tried it again yesterday and found it remarkable! Unfortunately for L'Artisan's perfumes; not enough longevity and sillage...
9/10
The wolf, who because of the dawn vapouring sneaks noiselessly on the unknown landscapes through a forest. We have been on north, which he inflicts upon our nose with the peppery effect, where the impenetrable grey fog breathes spicy atmosphere somewhere. We do not get over this vigorous launch yet when the snappish green ones arrive sounding the reveille, insisting on the name of the fragrance faithfully. The big male, a party have been on strange ground doing for himself. Feels him with his strong and fragrance lasting long, one a wolf was left without a leader on the winter pack. His manly strength, and all of the team's members submit to his appearance duly. The mealy-mouthed gestures occur according to a hierarchy in the pack, that the hazel-nut bringing the sweets, and honey displays. Rub against our senses, and the character fragrances until now are caused to be forgotten for a moment. The alpha male black shining one, from water shakes his heavy fur coat, from which one a reminder sheds a fragrance onto the ascending good-bye, myrrh. This, with which he places a deep impression upon everybody, is his unique fragrance. Stands the continuous salutations, and submissions, than steadfast cedar. Contemplates it with a cool and stiff look, the females in a row volunteer for him. The ancient land, water, air are simultaneously on a sign in these moments, the lifebloods. Lengthy whining, and sudden tense silence ensues after rancour not causing injury. An one with a drawing decorated with rare samples on his hair disinherited once appears in the distance female. His speciality, that dry hay, and his skinned fragrance a drop of anise mixes with the attraction of the licorice, with which sugar of his the pair earner calls a stranger's attention for himself. The male decides the future of the pack with a growl welling up from thoraces, a mute made a choice newly with some silently next, into the fog disaster. They, the perfume disappears soon so. After them already only the santal the smoke band of a reminder is left over, and the undisturbed sylvan picture of the cedars nodding in the edge.
I really like Mechant Loup. Lightly sweet Honey-Hazelnut with sharp Licorice, on a Sandalwood-Cedar base. Unique.
The licorice keeps it's sharp woody-root quality throughout. Refined, simple, and not too sweet. The Myrrh is so light that, to me, it smells a bit like light Amber more than it does of Myrrh, but occasionally it does give me a whiff of it's full Myrrh note. It's not Myrrh dominant, but the Myrrh contributes to the crisp Licorice note. The sharpness of the Myrrh-Licorice accord tames the sweetness down. There is a very light smokiness in the background, but it's not nearly as smoky as Tea for Two, it's just a background note. Excellent blending.
Mechant Loup has really captured my interest, I keep going back to it over and over. I just had to buy this as my first L'Artisan fragrance.
Another translation of Mechant Loup, in English, is 'naughty wolf'.
Smells like licorice caramels kept in a cedar lined box. A weird and enchanting combination. I'm coming to love this one. EDIT: Swapped for a large decant and discovered that in larger quantities, this dries down to a very standard oriental on me, dusty and a bit cloying. Very disappointed since the sample smelled so strange and lovely.
I also was so excited by the description, but the perfume is only ok. At first it smelled too sweet, like sticky pralines, but it settles down into a nice hazlenut on top of dark wood. It is fairly masculine, but i like that in a winter fragrance.
I have tried many l'artisan perfumes because they're descriptions sound so wonderful...but they always fall flat on me! from reading the reviews on these pages i see that Aiona and i tend to like some of the same smells....so how 'bout it Aiona? which l'artisan perfumes do you like? :)
At first I hated it. It smelled like prunes. But after that first hour or so of prune juice and something like pond algae with milk, it warms up into this nice, non-floral smell. Now that I look at the notes above, I realize that it is the hazelnut I'm smelling, plus some woods. I don't smell the licorice on me, and that's unfortunate because it was something I was eagerly anticipating. It's kind of a manly scent, but certainly, women could wear it. It's not a fruity-floral, that's for sure.
This scent was created to inspire a walk in a forest. And it does this wonderfully. The hazelnut note is so yummy, too.
