Lanvin launches a new male fragrance called Avant Garde. As the name suggests, this scent is imagined as a modern interpretation of masculinity and elegance designed for "modern day dandies."
Perfumer Shyamala Maisondieu signed this oriental - woody composition:“ I wanted to create an olfactory interpretation of the casual elegance of Lanvin, with a streamlined, masculine and decidedly unique composition. Woody fragrances fascinate me. I find them chic and comfortable. Their warm, sensual strength attracts me as much as inspires me. The world that I’ve created for Avant Garde combines noble raw materials like vetiver and benzoin, with other surprising materials such as beeswax and tobacco. The spices? I have always loved working with them because you have to be able to handle them carefully to find the right amount, the right strength, of freshness, so that it is both spicy and incisive. I also played with a unique and powerful innovative note: Georgywood. This raw material, developed using the very latest technology, has woody amber tones which chime perfectly with the fragrance’s manly architecture”.
Its top notes combine Italian bergamot, Madagascar pepper, pink peppercorn and juniper. The heart is composed of lavender, nutmeg, cardamom and beeswax. Intensive vetiver blends with benzoin, tobacco and Georgywood molecule in the base.
Available as 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette. Avant Garde was launched in 2011.

Very pleasant sweet and spicy opening. Elegant. Great choice for winter. This is the kind of cologne when you are spending a romantic night with your girly next to the fire in a mountain house. Very sensual. Drydown is sweet powdery. My nose detects iris note and this reminds me of Dior Homme but iris is not listed on the notes. I higly recommend this. Average sillage, good longevity.
هذا عطر جميل،رائحته مميزة، انصح بشرائه،اشتريت علبة،وهي على وشك الإنتهاء،وأنا في طريقي لشراء أخرى، أرجو تجربته،
Antonpan hit the nail on the head - not really that spicy, though the woody and resinous (beeswax) notes make one think of spices. Though it bears a familiar smell, it still smells distinct from some other popular and recent releases like YSL's La Nuit de L'Homme & CK One Shock. Having worn it for a full day I will say that it lasts well on the skin 6-9 hrs (I'm at 6hrs now and its doing well). Its a great scent to wear for dates or going out on the town. In other words, I don't recommend it for every day casual wear as it could become annoying in its synthetic-ness, but its certainly nice to use as a departure from something more office-friendly and pedestrain.
Longevity - 9 (not a beast, but if I don't wash my neck I'm sure there would be traces of smell after 12hrs)
Sillage - 8 (moderate to strong; starts loud and tapers to something still easily detectable)
Smell - 7 (it is synthetic, not completely original, but its pleasant nonetheless)
Recommendation: Try it. If you're not satisfied with your evening rotation, this could be a great addition. Don't blind buy unless you like sweet and powdery fragrances.
i swear I can smell vanilla in this...it must be the mix of amber, honey and nutmeg that leave this aftertaste..pretty good smell- warm and spicy, but very smooth, the kind of smell that melts into your skin..
This is 90% similar to Joop! Go, too similar until I can't compare either them. Great longevity and projection, youthful and energetic. The only difference is the dustier first note with peppery scent. The rest of the notes is mild sweet, floral and woody fragrance, nice combination if you do now have Joop! Go.
7/10 from me. I think this is going to be a Lanvin major released after the clever Sport Pour Homme. Try it.
I MUST buy this for my boyfriend :D even though he might not like it... thats how much im in love with it!
Cardamom and tobacco. :)
Can detect some beeswax too, but none of the other notes.
Ok, maybe some benzoin.
The cinnamon note that some people detect is simply not there, it is cardamom and a heavy dose of it!
A caramel style scent which adds smokiness to form a lovely aroma, but is extremely close to the skin...
I applied 6 heavy sprays
0-5 mins - Intense & divine, caramel in style, though caramel is not listed. Reminds me of Rochas Pour Homme but with more powder and classier. Unisex. This is the closest I have come to making skin edible!!! Delicious, but not unique..
5 mins - 30 mins - 3 inch projection tops
30 mins - 2 hours. 1.5 inch projection. Smokiness comes in and soon becomes as dominant as the scent itself and makes this scent even better and quite sexy infact..
2 hours - 5 hours - So close to the skin, I cannot smell it unless I smell the area I sprayed, such a shame. Some soapiness comes in, which is unecessary and diminishes the aroma, but it does not ruin it
Too close to the skin, why is this? Perhaps for those intimate moments between the sheets? Not for me, I need to smell it for longer
This one is everything but avant garde! If you want to smell like 100% sugar lump, go for it. Otherwise, stay away as it is overly sweet and very unimaginative. Not really a masculine fragrance, if you ask me, it's more on the feminine side - it may appeal to women who love really sweet stuff.
Longevity - about 4 hrs, sillage - 1st hour quite impressive, then almost zero, as it sits close to the skin. The indicated notes look so fabulous, but there seems to be just sugar (be it benzoin) and maybe a bit of cinnamon (I agree with Vertigo - for a second I thought it smells like a warm apple roll with a touch of of cinnamon on top) in it for me, which makes the scent a bit bland.
The bottle is chic, though.
I think it's very fresh and clean smelling, lasting power is good too. Smells so much better than Bleu de Chanel. Really.
ETA: Perhaps what I love in this fragrance is the Georgywood, that you can also smell in Hinoki. It fits my definition of clean-fresh, perhaps even more than Iso E Super.
Don't expect anything very spicy from this release. Avant Garde is a typical sweet woody powdery ambery male fragrance. It straight away reminded me of YSL La Nuit de L'homme. Besides it can be compared with cK One Shock and Mandarina Duck Pure Black, although Avant Garde is lighter, less vanilla and, unfortunately, very synthetic. A very pleasant fragrance with a light sillage and longevity. I think women will like it. Nothing avantgarde though.
Hmm, well I did like the bottle, it looks great but ensure it's not in the shadows.
Apart from that, unfortunately it just does not cut it. It is not Avant Garde. I doubt, whoever buys this of course, will purchase this again as there are far better alternatives.
The bottle is great but only if kept on a shelf with a well lit background. Unfortunately, the mysterious "potion" inside is quite a disappointment. One won't even bother figuring out to how many other perfumes this one is similar.
"Avant Garde" is a perfume that can't live up to its very ambitious name.
the name to me is misleading. a very soft aroma, like an aura which is pleasant and inviting not in a sexual way. this reminds me of clean soft milky white skin-gender-less.to my nose this is pretty linear. Neither longevity nor silage is good on this.interesting bottle. nothing truly masculine about it. easily unisex.thanks :)
Avant Garde is good.
At the beginning smells green and spicy, very masculine with clear accords of bergamot, juniper and pepper.
Later on, it gets more and more sweet, warm, sensual, and very unisex.
It develops really beautifully!
At its maximum speed my nose gets mostly amber, tobacco and beeswax with sweet spices - I was sure it contains loads of cinnamon, which is not listed.
As it dries down, lavender accord gets stronger.
Projection is medium, an arm-length maybe, and the staying power of over 6 hours. Cold season daywear, I think.
Well done, but from new launches (so far: 2, verbally two) of warm, spicy sensual, scents that I've tried, POTION by DSQUARED2 is miles ahead of Avant Garde.
Oh, and I have to admit: this is not avant-garde at all.
I think so chic and powerful this combination of tobacco and benzoin. I am excited to meet her and discover these facets. Something like UdV for men and Lapidus pour homme. I love the sweet, powdery and woody facets of tobacco. I love it.
With all due respect, there's nothing wrong with my dictionary. We essentially say the same thing. Arguing for arguing sake is not my style nor is being patronising.
Thanks a lot.
@querelle : Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard".[1] The adjective form is used in English to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.
you damn right “querelle” something wring with your dictionary
but regarding what you said about Lanvin perfume is nothing news, well is in’t that what Lanvin always do (ordinary, risk free, cheap smell, nothing new) except Arpege which you think is not Lanvin at all
What is Avant Garde? The dictionary defines Avant Garde as an advanced group in any field, especially in the visual, literary, or musical arts- and furthermore in perfumery- whose works are characterized by unorthodox and experimental methods. Avant Garde is something daring and most of the times radical.
Now, if this new release from Lanvin is Avant Garde, then there is something completely wrong with the dictionary.. Cause it is not new, it is not radical nor experimental and most importantly, it is not unorthodox. What we have here is a dull, voiceless perfume which is resemblant to so many others out there.
If you want Avant Garde, look for Etat Libre D'Orange, Hiumecki and Graef and a couple more..
The only thing which is appealing is the bottle. And that's all.
@xXxOZZYxXx: You can purchase it on line in Harvey Nichols. London.
Something tells me i got to add this to my collection,so if you know where i can get it online, please let me know.
Please do comment on this fragrance.. I want to buy but do not wanna go for a blind buy...whoever use this... Please provide the info ...
