Idole by Lubin was introduced in 2005 in cooperation with the perfume nose Olivia Giacobetti. Inspiration for this fragrance came out of ancient spice routes from Madagascar and Zanzibar to Java and spice islands of Indonesia. Idole is a modern interpretation of a Lubin perfume from 1962. Top notes grant the composition with rum absolute, exotic saffron, bitter orange peel and black clover. The heart follows with notes of Doum palm, accords of ebony and sugar cane. Base notes include leather and red sandalwood. The bottle was designed by Serge Mansau, inspired by a traditional wooden ship (felucca) with a stopper shaped as an African mask.

Absolutely stunning right from the start! The rum, bitter orange and black cumin let you know immediately you're in for a treat. It's boozy, spicy, warm and a little sweet but just enough so... I'm often cautious about cumin in fragrances, as it can sometimes feel stinky to my nose, but no such thing here. It's just right. Saffron and, I think, something peppery soon joins in and at that point there was no going back: I was hooked.

The rum then subsides and the saffron shines; the middles notes remain spicy, with the addition of a gorgeous light smokiness. There is also something fruity, rich and liquorous but always balanced.

With time, gorgeous, warm amber develops, joined by sandalwood and, at least on my skin, a very discrete leather note.

Beautiful, comforting, warm, spicy but also mellow and velvety, Idole is perfect for cold weather. It's also unisex without a doubt. Sillage and longevity are good. Highly recommended.

Tried for the first time today and it knocked me upside the head. It's yummy.
Smells like rich, heavily reduced orange liquor with herbs. While orange is present, it's not fruity at all - more like orange preserve or marmalade. I think it smells very ambery, too; it recalls Ambre Russe to an extent. I see where the "sour 70s scent" comment comes from, and if you don't love a spice bomb I suspect that's what you'll get.
Wears surprisingly close to the skin, though I really need a second opinion to say for sure. Very wintery. The male marketing is a mistake, it's perfectly unisex.

Depending on the time of year, I get a strong, slightly sour 70s scent or an ambery resinous fragrance with some orange, smoke and sandalwood. Strange scent. Not sure what to think.
