Colonia Dulce by Maoli
For: women and men Designer: Maoli Olfactive Group: Citrus GourmandThis unique scent was formulated by a pair of talented brothers whose Hawaii reminiscence encouraged them to close their lemonade stand to recreate their favorite island fragrances.
The tweens’ mom transformed their desire to develop “their own cologne that smells like sunshine” into a business learning experience, and she prepared a unit study in natural perfumery.
“We studied smell as one of the most important senses, the history of perfume, and other things, and wrote a report,” Kai Hughes said, the older of the siblings. “Then mom, Kalani and I experimented with different essential oils. That was the funnest part.”
Little did their mom know that what the boys were about to create would fill the olfactory divide between baby products and pheromone sprays. Colonia Dulce also provides a breath of fresh air for discernible customers who want truly natural products because of aversions or allergies to synthetic scents found in most body care products today.
Based on their favorite “back-home” scents, Kai Hughes and Kalani Hughes recreated this sweet classic with a unique, fun twist. At first breath, lime and mandarin sparkle with sweetness. A heart of neroli and jasmine blossom open with their delicate essence, subtly perfuming the path for the warmth only real vanilla could bring to a blend as vibrant as this one.
“We both really like it because it makes us remember how warm and sunny Hawaii is,” Kai Hughes said. The family recently moved to the mainland U.S., where a tropical Hawaii memory is always welcome.
Maoli translates to “native, indigenous, genuine, true, and real” in Hawaiian. The business is now a family affair, dedicated to honoring the art of natural perfumery while providing healthy, fragrant indulgence to kids and kids at heart. Colonia Dulce is a new fragrance and it was introduced in 2009.

it is not gourmend .it is citrusy-white floral:)))

This makes it all the more difficult for me to say anything negative about Colonia Dulce...but in the name of truthful testing I will refrain from sitting on my hands & type on.
On my skin they haven't captured the scent of sunshine but something far more sinister yet equally 'golden'. I am not one to flinch at 'difficult' scents, but this one took my breath away....
.... the scent of SCHOOL URINALS! Stale, ancient urine complete with a heavy dose of those strange citrus/metallic smelling urinal 'cakes'.
Although this should have been enough to have me scrubbing immediately, I was so shocked that I kept it on & re-sniffed at regular intervals, each time in total shock & amazement.
To be fair, it does settle a bit after some time, but could I wait out the lengthy stale-pee stage? I think not. Such a shame - I so wanted to love, love, LOVE this one.

I once thought that Diesel Zero Plus was the closest smell to "home" in Hawaii...but I have to change my mind. Colonia Dulce is the true smell of Hawaii. Diesel is that waft of fresh air, with a hint of exotic flowers, and coconut that float into the plane as soon as they open the doors....but CD is the lush Hawaiian tropics swirled in a bottle! Such simple notes, yet so aromatic! When you walk onto the lanai after getting off of the plane, you feel the humidity and heat....but you also smell the ripe open flowers of the leis (made of plumerias, orchids, ginger flowers) being sold around you, the warm aroma of the juicy fruits growing in the distance mixed with fresh, clean, sun-drenched air, and the sweet joy of just being "home". This is what Maoli's Colonia Dulce brings to MY table. Hurray for Kai & Kalani's creation! Thank you for bringing me "home"... =)
If you like tropical flowers...give this one a try! On their website, it's pretty inexpensive....especially compared to the amount you'd have to shell out to actually GO to Hawaii.
