This is one of those perfumes that change considerably over time, never staying in one shape for long. And that's a plus.
The downside: too amberish for my taste, so it's slightly headache-inducing.
It's a sweet parfume. Nothing animalic (but I'm anosmic to musks, so there might be some) and an interesting drydown.
Not for me, even if I own one bottle. Swap anyone? ;)

L’Air de Rien is a weird perfume, kinda hauntingly beautiful with some kind of dark, even dusty feel to it.
The start is quite odd, which smells just like plastic doll head, which is somewhat similar to the aldehyde rose and dark feel John Galliano gives me. Don’t get me wrong, I actually really enjoy it. There’s something nostalgic here, something makes me think of dark gloomy late autumn afternoon when I was little, sitting inside the house and playing with my dolls, not realising it’s getting late and it’s getting harder to see the face of the dolls, but so attached to the nice feeling of playing with my stuff and just sitting there, I was so reluctant to turn on the light.

Soon after the initial nostalgic beautiful phase, it smells of something warmer than before, a little bit in an animalistic way with a little touch of spiciness. It instantly makes me think of those older creations of Guerlain, especially in the Parfum form, and Vol de Nuit, which is the one comes to my mind first.

After a while L’Air de Rien has been warmed up and tamed a bit more. It actually smells quite warm and cosy to me, I can smell a bit dry, non-sweet vanilla with some discreet woody scent there, which somehow makes me think of cupcakes in a rainy day, but don’t worry the scent itself doesn’t smell that close to sweet vanilla cupcake. Hmm, it’s like John Galliano woody-cupcake version, nice!

To me L’Air de Rien is the perfect cold night scent when I’m home alone, reading a book and holding a warm cup of tea; or a great scent for cooler weather when I feel lazy and just want to have a cuddle with someone I love.

Worth trying!

A disappointingly nice but ordinary scent without any trace of filth. A wearable, cosy and cute musky incense/patchouli which I would happily wear if I hadn't found other more interesting scents. I can't believe there are actual strong reactions to this one!

I didn't like the opening at all, but 30 minutes later, this settles into a sweet, musky skin scent that's rather nice. I don't sense anything sexy or dirty in it, on the contrary I think it's a pretty decent everyday scent that stays too close to skin and disappears too soon for my liking. I guess that's what the name means:)

I ordered this unsniffed and got a little worried when I read some of the reviews. Skunky, dirty, sex!! I didn't get any of those things when I tried it. I have coworkers standing and sniffing the air saying they can't get enough and that it smells so good. (Lucky for me it works well with my chemistry).

Well, on paper it sounded like something I might be interested in: "Jane Birkin sought to evoke the nostalgia of dusty libraries and old books". However, in reality, these fairly unusual qualities are almost completely eclipsed by the intense sugary powder of the amber, vanilla and musk. I really don't think these two elements go well together - mustiness and sweetness - and the sample bottle left me feeling a bit nauseous, to be honest.

However, I think it's sweetness marks it as feminine (in fact it smells wonderful on a woman) and although it's obviously a very well made perfume, as a man, I can't think of a single occasion I'd want to wear this.

Interestingly enough, I don't perceive this as a "dirty" or "skanky" scent... - but to me it is just what the name implies - RIEN. Nothing - more or less. It is VERY disappointing, given the commercial blurp on the sample telling me it is an "exquisite oriental with rich notes of French oakmoss, Tunesian neroli, sweet musk, amber and vanilla". I get a faint whisper of neroli on a blurred bed of musk coupled with a menthol-like, harsh top-note. Does sex really smell like this (I'm referring to other reviews here)??
Well, not in my experience. This is neither outstanding, nor shameless, but this has l'air de rien when I hoped it had l'air de tout.
3 of 10 points on my personal scale

My first thought is mentol toothpaste, it smells exactly like that and I'm confused what does that. At the first spray I was kinda hooked, 4 seconds later when I put my nose upon my wrist, it was just - booom - mentol toothpaste. I just want to say - what the hell? From which notes does come this medical/sharp/mentol smell? Oakmoss?
Anyway - it get's better, but only a slightly, slightly bit better, really unwearable for me. I'd be glad if I could feel "animalistic" notes or so, but for me it's nothing but mentol with some bits of neroli.

I kept my sample and came back to it after a month. This isn't a bad scent, it's just not my genre. I prefer it as a wafting halo and I don't want it right under my nose all day. But catching whiffs of it is nice.

This is a white, poofy, powdery fragrance that wears like an 80's prom dress. I think I would have liked it more if it had a darker base, but that probably wasn't the mood the artist wished to evoke.

What makes it hard for me to appreciate this is the heavy sweet note. You could almost spread it on a piece of toast and eat it; it's that thick.

I'm sure this has it's fans, and will certainly not offend anyone should you choose to wear it.

I just like my toppings to stay on my toast

Boozy, ashy, yes, but I also got a whiff of coffee to begin with. So it's like a good night out in reverse, beginning with the morning after.

To me this starts out as a low-key civet fest and stays that way for the duration with other notes coming and going. As its name suggests, this is a light and fairly subtle perfume, but it’s persistent. In the beginning there are indolic white flowers to boost the effect of the civet, then something sweet and powdery (and civet) takes over. In the end, it’s pretty much oakmoss and civet.

I cringed when I read Sky76’s description of the stereotypical L’Air de Rien user, because most of it (except for the mongrel dog) probably describes me pretty well. I think maybe those of us who fall on whatever end of the spectrum you want to call this like for our perfumes to smell gorgeous, not frankly skanky. We have enough skank in our lives without adding more. For that reason, I’m not all that impressed by Rien.

In all fairness, the evening when I tried it, I had been painting the walls in our house, breathing paint fumes all day, and even after a shower still had noticeable paint spots here and there. Maybe I didn’t do this scent justice, so will keep it in the rotation and revisit it at some point.

L'Air de Rien smells like a burning stick of amber incense on my skin. It even has a touch of that hot smoke aroma. The effect of the notes as I perceive them: sweet amber, a bit powdery; a bit of dry sawdust and wood; a bit of salty skin.

I don't get the skanky "unwashed panties" note until much later in the perfume's evolution. I really can't smell it until I've had it on my skin for the better part of the day. It becomes detectible then, but its effect here is much more subtle than the effect I get from Bal a Versailles or Schiaparelli's Shocking. I think I'll stick to Bal when I want a little skank.

Comparisons aside, L'Air de Rien is a beautiful scent that got raves from the hubby (who didn't detect the "panties" aroma at all). It stays close to my skin but has amazing longevity. This would be a good perfume for both cozy times and intimate encounters, even though it smells a bit more innocent on me than I would have expected.

For the first hald an hour of trying this as a sample I really quite liked it, as it seemed a cousin to L'Heure Bleu, with it's complex, animalistic undertones overlaying something more floral, and a lack of loud screechy top notes. But after a while the rather over sweet Baby Powder accent becomes rather to strong for my liking. I suspect that it may take a proper purchase and lengthier trials to make up my mind. It certainly lasts a long time, and I am always intrigued by something a bit different. Definitely a not teen perfume, despite the sweetness

What kind of cheese do you like? Bland, mild, cream cheese...soft, gentle sheep cheese....or perhaps you like the really stinky blue stuff or the camembert that is running off the plate?

If your preference is for the latter two & you gobble them up with your fingers grimy from gardening & teasing the mongrel dog, with hay in your tangled hair & feet as bare as your face, then this fragrance will be as familiar & comforting to you as your grubby blanket strewn across the back seat of your love bus.

Thanks to SNS I have a little of this delicious "stinker" to try. It wasn't love at first sniff - too strange, too uneasy - & I couldn't help thinking that it would go nicely with a fig compot & some fresh malty bread!

Yes, it's skanky & a little bit filthy: parched dry, not sugar-sweet but dirty-sweet. Lots of lovely patchouli, baked woods & a savoury amber...but then a sickly oakmoss jarrs the mix which simultaniously turns my stomach & intrigues my mind. Most bizarre. It must awaken the latent beast that dwells within because I am suprised that I find such a scent so fascinating!

Rien doesn't give a damn, & I like its unconventional & uncompromising personality. Mother nature's naughty, saucy dirty daughter. How very Jane Birkin!

i expected to enjoy this one because i really like bal a versailles, but it was not something i would ever put on again. where bal a versailles is warm, natural and lively to me, this one seems synthetic and jumbled. i would not put them in the same category or league.

This didn't work on me. I loved it in the bottle, on paper and even on cloth. On my skin it just smells dirty-not in good way-old and stale. I really wanted to love it, but just can't wear.

I call this one "dirty girl". It has a "slept in your clothes after a night of drinking and sex" flavor to it. Wow imagine her in L'air and him in Muscs Koublai Khan or vice versa.

Oh, I wish that this one suited me, but it dosn´t. It remind me a little of Etat Libre d'Orange`s "Rien" but nicer and wearable. But still, it isn´t for me, I only feel uncomforable with it, there is some cloying scent in it, like something messing with my skinchemistry and not turning out well. The different notes become some kind of blury mess on me and I was glad when it finally didn´t smell anymore. Not a scrubber tough, but close enough.

A deliciously scunky dirty uncompromised perfume that is only for intimate use, and only by brave wild things that dont affraid to be described as filthy.I love it but personaly i find it hard to wear it regularly. It starts with a blooming neroli note, it gets in a bit of 60's bohemian patchouli and in the drydown ( the best phase )beastly animalic, dry, sensual. The smell of incestous sex.
