The graceful, sensual allure of the East and the modern elegance of the West discover an exquisite balance in the effortlessly sophisticated new fragrance for women, NATORI from Josie Natori. Natori, the Japanese word for “highest form of art.” It was created by Caroline Sabas.
The Fragrance:
A sparkling floral oriental, the NATORI fragrance opens with an effervescent bouquet of fresh rose petals enriched by deep, dark plum notes. The heart is an exotic and alluring hybrid of ylang ylang, purple peony and night blooming jasmine. Slipping languidly over pulse points, black patchouli, amber and a hint of satin musk complete this mysterious and tantalizing fragrance.
The Bottle:
The NATORI fragrance bottle is a deep purple flacon inspired by the Lotus blossom – specifically the sensual silhouette of slowly unfolding petals. Made of shimmering violet-black glass there is a small clear window on the bottle façade to provide a glimpse into the golden heart of the fragrance.
Embodying divine beauty and pure love, the Lotus Flower (water lily) is imbued with great symbolism throughout Asia. Chinese poets have compared the unfolding leaves to the body of a beautiful woman emerging from her bath. The delicate, feminine form is a symbol of a folded heart opening to light and freedom. The sensuously shaped bottle is easy to handle: its tactile nature extends through every detail including the cap which is conceived to mimic a stone worn smooth by the river.
The Color:
Purple, traditionally royal, expresses its own dichotomies: balance and harmony, strength and vulnerability. The color was also chosen for its own yin / yang of cool blue and fire red. Natori was launched in 1980.

This is a rose fragrance that is classy and a bit retro IMO. It's shares some of the qualities and similarities to Chanel No. 5 and Arpege but way more subdued. It's a cozy and delicate but it's got presence. It's not a shy scent whatsoever. The rose note is quite prominent it mixes with skin and feels like body lotion. It's quite a beautiful fragrance. I would venture to say it's a modern take on a classic! Sophisticated and grown up and sexy would describe this scent. Quality is outstanding.
Powdery musk, amber notes, lovely lovely floriental, which is usually sooo not my thing. This one I'm rather loving. It has the feeling of expensive French milled soap or face cream, just a simple (though the combination is anything but) elegant expression of beauty.
Bought a large tester totally on a whim....was looking for something else , saw a great deal on Natori on Ebay, quickly did my homework on it...and it was mine. Interestingly, that these spontaneous blind purchases are the most successful for me, even though you take double risk.
First of all the bottle is absolutely gorgeous midnight blue, very elegant and beautiful in its simplicity. The perfume suits the bottle perfectly...very soft and elegant, slightly powdery, it has that velvet smooth quality. I don't get any aldehydes but I do get a lot of plum, rose and amber. It has great sillage, especially for a subtle fragrance. Very well made and makes a great addition to my collection.
Edit: the longevity is extraordinary as well....3 hours later still going strong.
The bottle is eye catching in real life
The juice is a cross between the discontinued Avon perfume and VS Basic Instinct. if you have not sniffed the discontinued Avon perfume, but you know how Avon does their essences, it will immediately ring the olfactory Avon bell for you.( I pissed the SA off by telling her this,). I can't help it if I remember this juice from long ago..It's not a bad thing! For vintage lovers of the original Natori, this will rock! I would love a bottle!
Oh and this is quite jammy, berry nectar sweet and smooth, aggressive but softly suggestive and juicy too! ...(`★´)
( this does not smell like YSL's Nu from 2002 at all) If you want Nu, this will not do it for you) IMO ;)
This is a new version of the earlier perfume... updated version released in 2009. My daughter and I love Coco Mademoiselle, but are switching to this to give ourselves something different for awhile. The dry down is gorgeous. Really gorgeous.
The people talk about the similarity with : Nu, Black Orchid VF, Samsara,Passion, Chloe, La Mome, Angel (argh!)...
I´m curious!
I would classify this in the same catagory as Angel, Samsara, etc. as it has a strong personality and lasted forever on me. Very strong patchouli/amber drydown. Not bad,but would not try it again . A little too overpowering.
Wow this fragrance really evolves quickly. It starts off as mysterious dark rose and plum and then before the plum ripens it quickly becomes a very powdery patchouli that is more quiet and reserved than dark and mysterious. After a few minutes, the patchouli starts fighting its way forward and is met by a jasmine. Interestingly, the two battle it out in a beautiful way...leaving a pretty flowery amber in its wake. Very intriguing fragrance but not for me.
Similar with La Mome (Balmain).A nice fragrance ,but not Wonderfull.
This one smells of Liz Taylor's Passion, a little. However, I LIKE this version. While Passion was harsh and whacked you in the face, this one is smoother and waaaay more sophisticated.
I wore this once, and my mom, who has NEVER complimented me on perfume, says that I smelled lovely. Gently apply, though, it's got a rather strong sillage.
I have to disagree with those who consider Natori (2009) a pedestrian maternal scent. The front fruit brings this 1980s style spicy chypre into the 21st century. Think YSL's Nu blended with a rich zinfandel.
The top has deep, dark rose notes lifted by a genererous dollop of aldehydes. The sweet, bright, floral heart expresses peony and jasmine, but the Ylang Ylang- usually a dominant note in itself- is overcome by the bold florals in a heart of sweet, intoxicating powder. The YY finally makes an appearance in the base, where resinous amber is very well balanced with a nice synthetic musk. Patchouli is very understated, and used more as a fixative than an actual note. Although not noted, a base of Vanilla, Sandal, & Amber creates a warm, comforting, and long lived drydown.
I find this scent undeniably enjoyable, sexy, well-crafted, and easy to wear. Simply a gorgeous perfume.
b.n. update...since wearing this in the fall months, I'm finding this redolent of Armani's Cuir Amethyste- not as edgy, but there is a strikingly similar note.
How can this be a Tom Ford Black Orchid wannabe, when Natori was released in 1980 and TF Black Orchid came 26 years later, in 2006?
You may think they smell similar (i think not, but we all smell things differently), and you may prefer TF BO (although i thought it smelled like Fracas, but not as good). But a 30 year old perfume cannot be a wannabe, trying to imitate, a 4 year old one.
Edited to Add: Thank you for the explanation, Kterhark. Now your comment makes more sense :)
What a pretty fragrance. Soft, not a punch you in the face at first application type fragrance. Graceful is a great way of describing it. I could smell the rose and peony. Faded quickly though. It's a scent I'd readily wear if gifted, but not necessarily something I'd rush out to buy.
I agree with Jeca. This also takes me back to my early childhood in the 80's. It smells like some perfumed Avon creams my mother owned but didn't let me use for fear of me developing allergic reactions. To be honest, she wasn't fond of the scents herself, but she would buy the creams anyway to help out a friend occasionally. Natori is not unpleasant, but it has a rose-based scent that tends to smell cheap nowadays. (Nahema also falls in this category.) I would not wear it myself, but would not mind being next to someone who does.
Natori reminds me of sharp fragrances my mother had (fruity chypres, I even don't know the names, I used to play with them when I was five) ;o) I like it very much, it's not very long lasting, but it doesn't disappear from my skin, just becomes smoothier. I get dark tart plum at the very beginning, I like this part the most.
I have been smelling it all day, very nostalgic, even a little bit sad, but in a noble way, as after watching a good old movie.
I loved the beginning, a huge blast of sparkling aldehydes that reminded me of the old Chloe. But minutes after it completely disappeared on my skin. I can't smell it at all, except for a mild soapiness. Did this happen to anyone else?
Reading the notes surprised me, since it smells like vanilla, chocolate and coffee on me.
Then the amber develops, but the sweetness remains.
It stays on me for a long time. I woke up in the morning and I still smell faint sweetness and amber from wearing it yesterday.
After wearing it for two days, I started to smell the floral notes too.
There is nothing groundbreaking or startlingly unusual in Natori - but that doesn't stop it being just lovely. It's very smooth, clinging to the skin and giving off discreet sillage. I enjoy the blend of plum, rose, ylang, and amber, which is creamy and rich without being sweet.
Natori reminded me somewhat of Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, although VdF is a little sexier and quite a bit quirkier (truffle accord anyone?). It's quite wearable. It stayed on my skin for several hours, feeling soft and pretty as satin underthings. Natori is unabashedly feminine, rounded and smooth.
EDIT: Please note, I am not referring to the Avon Natori fragrance, which is considerably older than this one. Please also note that I make reference to Tom Ford Black Orchid VOILE DE FLEUR, which is to my nose significantly different from the original Black Orchid.
This one is nothing special and pricey, I received a sample yesterday and when I applied it to my skin I was WOW very nice, I could smell the peony, musk and the plum, but never amber and patchouli and after a while it becomes dull and disappears really fast, no lasting power at all. I still like it though, but I won’t buy it.
