Imagine a hot, steamy night in the jungle. Insects chirping, unseen creatures moving in the leaves and branches, and the heavenly scent of a flower that must be the orchid queen of the night. The nose behind the fragrance is Ellen Covey. Little Stars is available as a parfum extrait or EdP, and is a rich blend of citrus, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, clove bud and jasmine on a base of exotic woods, balsams, oud, spikenard, black agar and atlas cedarwood. A spicy, woody floral scent reminiscent of white, night-fragrant orchids and the woody branches that they grow on. Little Stars was launched in 2011.
There was something slightly bitter/herbal in the opening that I didn't like, but I can barely remember it now because it was fleeting and I'm now enraptured by the drydown and can't stop smelling my wrist. This is masterfully blended in such a way that it's more than the sum of its parts and I'm having difficulty talking about individual notes. The woods pull it in one direction and then the florals into another. You can't pin it down! It strikes a great balance at the axis of warm spicy, woody and floral. The citrus is not prominent, and I couldn't pull it out as an individual note, but it's giving it a bit of verve and sparkle and mitigating any potential flatness. Original!
EDIT: I've gone back to investigate this opening so that I can describe it better. It's very herbal, slightly medicinal and there is something 'cool' in it (mint? anise?)It reminded me of that smell that hits you when you walk into a health food store - a mishmash of different dry, bitter herbs. Still don't like it; it lasts about an hour. This will be one of those that I strategically apply an hour before leaving the house. Drydown still fantastic.
The first note that jumps out for me is a medicinal one, perhaps the clove bud? Almost immediately the sweet and woody blend takes over. I don't sense so much a hot, steamy jungle, but rather a cool jungle night or orchids blooming in the high altitude cloud forests. Perhaps, if I were sampling this fragrance in summer, the steamy jungle would be more apparent but I am trying it in winter after a long walk in the cold morning air.
I love this scent. I think it will be my next purchase from Olympic Orchids. "Little Stars" might also be a good fragrance for a man because of the heavy dose of woods and the citrus and spice. Perhaps a drier version?
