My first introduction to Cachet was when one of the girls in my Math class (back in High School, mid '70's) took a big bottle of Cachet out of her purse one day during class and sprayed it on herself. Ahhhhh......this incredibly beautiful; classy scent came wafting my way and it was divine! I had to ask her what perfume she was wearing because I could not see the name on it and she said "Cachet". Well, I just had to go out and purchase a big bottle I loved it so much! I cannot think of a more beautiful; sophisticated fragrance than the original Cachet that was first introduced back in 1970. It was in a class by itself and as the advertisement stated, "Cachet...as individual as you are".
Beautiful, beautiful fragrance.
(PS: The Cachet that is out now in the purple, pink, and green box has been reformulated. This new; darker version is a far cry from the original. I'm so sad about this. I'd still be wearing it to this day if it was the original formula.)
The drugstore classic was the "natural womans" defining moment! It was the greenest, boldest chypre ever produced for the American market. Vetiver, patcholi and oakmoss-take your pick-dominated this now lost classic. Toss in some leather and spicy notes and Cachet is defined!
There are some vintages floating around on E-bay that are worth the effort. I loved the 1970s original ad campaign that had all of the ladies in character lined up and Cachet would change for each of them. Indeed, chypre does that. Given the time period it was launched, its easy to gage it popularity.
The original Cachet was glorious. The one I bought recently stinks of aftershave. Indeed, colleagues have openly asked why I've suddenly taken to aftershaves after wearing so many other fabulous perfumes over the years.
So, now I use this as a room-freshener.
And I live in perpetual fear that all my previously beloved scents will either be re-formulated, (Rive Gauche, Ysatis) -- if it ain't broken, why mend it? OR my beloved scents will be discontinued and disappear from the shelves (and websites) almost completely: Caleche, Calendre, all the Carons, Carvens....
Why do perfume makers fail to get the message? The world's top-selling perfume, (Chanel No. 5, one bottle sold every 48 seconds) is also the ONLY perfume that has never been reformulated and when new ingredients are necessary, every attempt is made to replicate the original cocktail of 1921.
How many of today's stinkers will still be around, in the same format, 90 years from now, eh?
Was one of my first perfumes, and I loved it completely. I would branch off to the other scents like Jontue and charlie and jovan, but always circled back to Cachet. I am nostolgic for this scent again - time to ebay!!!
My aunt had this perfume. I used to love to play at her dressing table and sample all her perfumes and I loved Cachet the most. It brings back childhood memories for me and has a fresh scent. It does remind me of Chanel No. 5 but doesn't smell nearly as good.
Had one, gave it to my grandma. I can't stand it. I find it slightly similar to Paris by YSL, which is one of my worst experiences. It's that "old lady perfume" kind of smell.
My grandma loved it, btw.
Cachet is classified as a chypre floral but I can't tell what it is. Nothing in it stands out. Not that it's a bad scent. It's nice, pretty, pleasant. It smells a great deal like Chanel No5: sharp on the opening, soft and powdery on the drydown. And like No5 it smells expensive and classy. It's been around for over forty years probably for the same reason that No5 has been around so long despite it's lack of distinction: it's inoffensive. It's a safe choice for any occasion. A great, affordable "go to" scent.
My mom used to wear this back in the 70's for her special nights out. I remember her smelling fresh yet sophisticated. Loved it on her. Today I bought some at a drug store, came in the same bottle I remember mom using. Of course had to try it on as soon as I got into my car. Initial spray brought back the 70's alright: 70's drugstore perfumes anyway. Far too"perfumy," overwhelming,a choke-fest in a bottle. The initial spray that is. Thankfully softened down real quick. Actually smells rich and well, pretty.I am smelling alot of amber here.Call me crazy this one reminds me a little of Chanel#5. Certainly smells nothing on me as I remembered on my mom. Liked it much better on her. Husband did not like it. Stated it smelled too strong and sharp. Will give to my mother for old times sake. Thankyou.
cachet was my favorite perfume of all from the 70's. one of the 1st more adult perfumes i ever used. it reminded me of jontue, but a little a little bit better, softer. the jasmine and amber really came out on me, and there is something about leather notes in perfume that i just love, it just brings out the best in me. i loved this scent and it was always on my sweaters or scarves. i have no idea what the new version smells like, but the original scent was/is divine.
Cachet is a real seventies perfume. If you weren't there then you may not get why it's different from the fragrances produced now. When trying a vintage perfume look at what year it came out before comparing it to todays fruity-florals. Women used to wear more exotic, heavier scents back in the mid-century days. Cachet was very popular in the 1970s. It still has a following and that's why it's for sale at the drugstore after 40 years. It might be called a hippie perfume since it has that seventies herbal scent. Think Clairol Herbal Essence , that's the feel of it. It's not your grandma's perfume but your cool aunt probably wore this.
This was advertised in the seventies as a fragrance that changed with your body chemistry and smelled different on everyone. I didn't like the smell of it then. Maybe it was a good fragrance for some or it has sentimental value but I see that it is still available.
Put on your bell bottom jeans and spray on your Cachet and be cool knowing that you don't smell like every other girl.
This has a sharp green fragrance. It smells good. My problem is I no longer know how to properly apply something that actually has a profoundly heavy scent. Maybe this is one of my "walk throughs".
This was my first perfume and has a unique scent. I feel like buying it again! Are amber and civet made synthetically now? I really wouldn't mind if they do! It does not say in this website nor in the little icons under the description.
Love this scent! Very green and sharp. I have a bottle just waiting to be used but I keep moving from bottle to bottle and not ever seeming to get around to this but I will eventually. This is a wonderful scent!
I wore this back in the day and I'm waiting for my vintage bottle I bought on eBay. I always received lots of compliments because it worked so well with my chemistry. My sister tried it and it didn't even smell like the same perfume on her.
This was my mother's signature scent and the reason I like spicy scents.
I have purchased some bottles for her in the last few years but will try to find some vintage
I always wore this fragrance I loved. My husband bought a bottle for me while we were dating in 1971, after we married he always bought me a bottle for our anniversary and 1 for my birthday those 2 bottles lasted me an entire year but the stores in our area stopped carrying it 5yrs ago I HAVE BEEN LOST I am so glad to find it again
I had this one as a teenager (the old formulation, the dark amber/orangey juice) and found it unmemorable. I have not smelled the new formulation (pale yellow), which I understand to be completely different than the old. If you're expecting this to be the Cachet you remember, you'll be disappointed.
This one is an old US classic, dating back to the 70's. You may not have heard of it before, but it is always available in drugstores etc.- not expensive, but smelling suprisingly good! It has an instantly sparkling appeal with a high-piched top note. Under this lies the heart of Cachet, a very cool, herbal, mossy heart which is persistent for a very long time.
Nevertheless it is not monotonous and stands out as a very crisp, fine fragrance.
