Muscs Koublai Khan Fragrance Reviews

I was worried when I got this 1ml sample that it would be primarily a fecal ballsac scent but I was soooo pleasantly relieved. I tried to do two dabs of this on my wrist but I accidentally spilled more like 20 dabs. It ran down my arm and started collecting in my sleeve. EXXXTREME!

This is such a strange animalistic concoction. It reminds me of white musk by bodyshop but much much much dirtier, carnal, visceral, raw, stanky, sexy, sensual, triple x rated for infinity.

I am getting: musk, fur, sweat, barnyard, hay, amber, mothballs, floral arrangement, sweaty male in particular, patchouli. It changes every-time I smell my wrist or wave my arm in front of my nose. Sometimes I get a whiff of flowery sweat, other times a clean, patchouli, amber musk and now... sharp, urinal cakes and hay. But I like it. I can't help it.

A scent for perverts!

Just kidding (or I am?). It's actually a quite pleasant musk once all the stank dries down. Very soapy, fresh, floral with a hint of patchouli. Animal shank seems to be fading but I know it's still there because occasionally I sure as hell can smell it. Thankfully it's subtle. I think this may be a work of art when it comes to musky fragrances and needs to be tried. I am going to test this out in public and see what happens...

SEVERAL HOURS LATER

I now LOVE this. The drydown is SO good. Soft, powdery musk with a hint of patchouli and subdued civet. I layered this with oud ispahan and it smells beyond incredible. One spray of oud ispahan over top and I know this will last for the next 24 hours AT LEAST. I have to get me some of this fume as a base for some of my fragrances. It still smells slightly sweaty but it's a good kind of sweat, a sexual one... pheromones... I was at the grocery store and men were STARING and SMILING at me when I walked by. Bees to honey.... bees to MKK....

NEXT DAY

Yup, still there. A fading musk that has a chalkboard smell to it (very dusty). It has been absorbed by my skin and now sits comfortably. A fantastic experience!

So I know I’m a little late to party but I just received a sample of MKK.
I was so excited to get this in the mail, Yay! I read so many interesting reviews I couldn’t wait to get this on my skin. I was expecting a nose bomb. It opens with some whiffs of body odor then….. Nothing! Well barely anything, just a hint of 70’s style Musk oil, maybe a hint of something powdery. This is so sad. I’m off to visit a friend; it will be interesting to see if she gets more than I from this one.

Architecturally this resembles Fumerie Turque. Or, by the order chronological vice versa.
In this case, the florals are pushed forward to run aside the incense. The Musk, like the FT is cast behind, shaded. Also in this case, it is Halitosis and Napthalene rich and is the very, "Ambergris" concoction that I have obtained from Al Haramain. This is masterfully constructed Feminine. FT is masterfully constructed Masculine. These are the only two Lutens I have tasted thus far. They are exceptional.

Synesthetic. Billowing Clouds,Warm, Rose hued Purple.

Big, heavy, sexy perfume in the retro style; musk out front and center over an old school floral background. I didn't get the "unshowered-post-sex" thing in the beginning; just sexy, buxom, but sophisticated and well structured. It smelled exactly what like what you'd wear to get coital with someone. As it dries down you get that post-coital sexy funk - still well structured though. Wears surprisingly close to the skin - this is something you either wear for yourself or someone you're going to get pretty close to. I could see a sexy, confident man wearing MKK with a suit, or a sexy, confident woman (think Angelina Jolie) with jeans and cowboy boots. Sensual, opulent, and decadent.

I used to wonder why people would gravitate toward animalic fragrances. Why would anyone want to smell like a civet, hyrax or a beaver?

Then I tried Roja Dove's Diaghilev and suddenly understood and was out to try all the animalics I could.

This smells like you just made love and your girl's perfume, along with other odors, lay heavy in the air. As the base appears, its like you and your girl have gone your separate ways, and hours later you can still smell her perfume on your skin.

Based on the reviews, I expected this to project strongly and smell mostly fecal. What I got was something different; this has elements of both Diaghilev (lighter on the florals) and Amouage's Gold Man (minus the baby powder) but maintains the civet (I get no Castoreum) not that is strong in both.

A reference for the genre. Beautiful.

Muscs Koublai Khan is another fragrance I approached with apprehension due to its reputation. In fact in my very first TPC order I hesitantly bought a sample and was half relieved when they let me know it was out of stock. After not only surviving but loving my run-in with Montale's Aoud Cuir d'Arabie, though, I knew that I needed to trust my gut on MKK. And I'm so glad I did.

On my first application of MKK my wife sniffed, then gripped my arm a little tighter, inhaleded deeply, and said “Mmmm, this might be the best thing you've ever worn.” I'm tempted to end the review here, because what the hell else matters?

MKK is fur, flesh, cumin, candlelight, exertion. Impossibly good BO mixed with burning wax and exotic spices. Khal Drogo in a bottle. Wearing it makes me feel sexy like nothing else. Perfection with jeans, a henley and work boots. I may be wrong but I don't think anyone would ever guess you were wearing a fragrance, just that you accidentally left the house smelling ravishing. This strikes me as being the scent of a man but a woman could definitely wear it. Just know that you're telling everyone whose path you cross a secret that may make them blush.

I tried to live with Kiehl's Original Musk as a substitute, and I love it as well, in a different way. They do share an identical musk note. But Kiehl's is trying to smell pleasant! MKK doesn't bother, and is better for it. Salome, another dear friend, shares many similarities but is comparatively bombastic. She takes pleasure in being unwashed but her true game is in announcing it. Why is MKK the king of animalics?

Because Muscs Koublai Khan just is.

After reading all of the hype this fragrance has garnered, I was anxious to give it a try. I was expecting a filthy, animalic powerhouse. Instead, on first spray, what I got was a powdery, floral quality up front. It dries down to a musty, spicy, amber and musk scent that is equally powdery. On my skin, the fragrance had an almost feminine quality to it. I have read repeatedly that individual skin chemistry plays a large role in how this scent works. This fragrance clearly does not work on my skin. The beast refused to come out of the cage for me.

Perhaps it may also have to do with my expectations around animalic fragrances. I have had a recent love affair with Hard Leather by LM Parfums. That fragrance likely has me spoiled for other animalics.

People, relax. It's not that extreme. It does open with a boost of cumin, civet, castoreum and then some spices on the background. The first time one smells this, it can be surprising, but these notes don't last very long. After approximately 45 minutes a honeyed note sets in, and the cumin is long gone. What's left after 2 hours, is a very rich and round, but soft musk, with a faint of rose. Not the kind of musk that is reminiscent of soap, but the kind that more the type that reminds of skin. Very purr purr, furr furr. Towards the masculine end of the spectrum at start, but definitely unisex at dry down.

After a somewhat messy, dirty, spicy and rosy opening this fascinating perfume settles down into a wonderfully musky, animalic, soft and sexy scent that ever so slightly resembles the natural smell of human intimate body parts leaning towards the masculine end of the spectrum in my opinion.

HOOOOOLY JESUS, WHAT A BEAST. I smell like a deer. Or a civet, I guess. Either way, on me, this stuff just reads as "ANIMAL" for the first 30 minutes. I thought I'd like it, but honestly, it smells more musty than musky to me, a little mothball-ish.
Once the vanilla/sweet notes start coming through and mingling properly with the civet, I like this a lot more--almost even love it. But I just can't handle that opening. Better make sure you're real into animalics before trying this one--and I mean natural, heavy, straight-from-the-cat's-ass animalics. Maybe it's the American in me, but I don't think this much skank is something I'm prepared for yet.

Since the limited availability of this scent it took me a while to find a decant so I could sample it. I was expecting to be wowed a little more based on the reviews. Don't get me wrong it smells very good, but it smells like Musc Tonkin mixed with Absolue Pour Le Soir toned down with some flowers thrown in. I already have Musc Tonkin and am buying Absolue Pour Le Soir, both of which are better perfumes in my opinion. This doesn't have that much strength or longevity for having the reputation for being a beast. Seems pretty mild mannered to me. Glad I didn't blind buy this, I would have been disappointed. I will enjoy my decant though. Glad to have smelled this very gentle fuzzy kitten and the kitten is holding some flowers. A lot of exaggerating in these reviews for sure.

Just like hot sweaty wild buffalo, happily it gets down to a softer buffalo at rest scent after about 45min. Has a mild leathery fecal note as well. After about 4 hours it is pleasant with no fecal or beastly sweat tones.

I, like many people, was attracted to this scent because of the extreme reviews.
Unfortunately, I don't think this fragrance lives up to the hype.

I applied a decent amount from a vial (almost 1/3 of it)and the cumin was quite noticeable. But within an hour, my husband who is extremely sensitive to cumin and thinks it an atrocious smell, couldn't smell the cumin at all.

I kept sniffing in the hopes of finding what was so controversial about this scent but after the cumin left, I was left with an nice soft, barely noticeable civet over a fancy soap.

It's nice enough and I do like it. I would wear it if I were gifted a bottle, but I would not pay for a bottle. There is nothing here that I can't be satisfied with elsewhere.

Heavily applied Musc Koublai Khan smells like the fur of an animal. Any overwhelming aspect of this scent does dry down in a short matter of time on my skin. Projection is about an inch.

Lightly applied it’s quite nice, like honeyed skin. A very warm soft musk, Most definitely a unique offering that stands out from any clean musk on the mainstream fragrance market. This isn’t a very long lasting scent on my skin to make it worth it to me to buy. After a few hours this scent smells like ordinary un-adorned skin. Reminds me of the scent of skin after skipping one day of showering after a day of not getting dirty or sweaty in any way, so how a person’s skin would naturally smell.

Overall, with Musc Koublai Khan one journeys through the wilderness like a big cat but ends up at home lazy in their pajamas.

I've wanted to try this for several months now because of all of the insane descriptions. I never really understood the term animalic until I smelled this. (I smelled it a bit in Dzing! but nothing like this.) This smell really messes with my mind. It's this strange scent of hay and wild animal. I saw a comment describing it as a buffalo out in the field, and I totally get that. If you can imagine that farm-stable-barn-wild animal smell, that's what I'm getting at here. But here's the catch- this scent is also very sweet and sexy. Amongst stinky, wild animals, there's the beautiful, sensual amber, rose, and vanilla. It's so contradictory to pair these feelings together, the wild animals and the sexiness. It feels very carnal. Some people seems to really enjoy this, but it makes me a bit uneasy. However, I would 100% recommend this scent as something to try. Even if not to love, to experience. It has a very raw, unnerving sensuality about it, and it's fascinating.

I got a small decant as part of a animalic perfumes sampler, and while I enjoyed a number of them, MKK was probably the most memorable.

Most musks go metallic on me: Lutens' Clair de Musc smells like Christmas tinsel, Kiehl's No. 1 reminds me of wet pennies.

But Muscs Koublai Khan smells like real human sweat, in the nicest, sexiest, coziest possible way; its like nuzzling your nose behind the ear of of someone you really like after a winter day outside. As the top notes fade away I get a hint of overripe rose and something golden and syrupy like dark honey or burnt sugar. There's also a slight smoky smell like a recently extinguished candle.

As woman who often wears dark unisex scents -- Chergui, Bvlgari Black, Rochas Femme, etc. -- I think MKK works well with my chemistry, but it doesn't quite smell like me. I wouldn't say it's a traditionally masculine scent, but somehow it seems more at home on a man than a woman. On me, it's the perfume equivalent of practicing kissing with your pillow, but I kind of want a bottle anyway. I love you arm boyfriend!

At times I get a vivid, rich rose in the top notes. Especially when it's cold out. Spectacular. Other times I get a smooth barber shop-type scent, masculine and throwback. There are several facets to this. In the summertime, I get more of the sweaty-underpants-scent beneath the rose. Even if you're not into dirty scents, there is alot here to experience and appreciate. I am saving up for a full bottle because I have gone through 4 decants of this and I love it. It's a multi-layered, well-made work of art. One of the very few perfumes that I will put on just to ponder.

I have not had the pleasure of wearing this scent myself, but I have smelled it on others. This is a truly animalic scent, probably the "muskiest musk" that does not merely smell like the glands of an animal. MKK is more sophisticated than that...it also has a sweet/spicy/incense undertone which cuts the rutting beast odor and makes it wearable in polite company. The civet is quite dominant, too.
However, on one person, it smelled like manure! I suspect that this fellow was not as hygienic as the other MKK wearers I have known, because he had a sweaty appearance, and this may have adversely affected the perfume.
I would suggest a "try before you buy" approach if feasible, and apply in small increments to test how MKK reacts on your body. Also, be impeccably clean when using this or any other animalic perfume!
Longevity seems to be excellent, while sillage varies depending upon the wearer (the sweaty dude had a huge aura of scent, which in his case was NOT a good thing!).
I want a bottle for myself, now that I can wear musks and other animalics without automatically getting a migraine.
MKK is, to me, the perfect image of a "dirty sexy musk".

This fragrance is an ode to civet and musk and sex. If you don't like it well....its not for you.

I think it is sublime and a must have for people who like animalic/musky scents. I see similarities with Kiehl's Musk, but MKK is way more sexed up.

Imagine having sweaty sex with Marilyn Monroe at a Vegas hotel room in the 1950s, and waking up in the morning.
This is exactly what you will be smelling like. The combination of body sweat, her Chanel no 5 rubbing off on you, and your own man musk all beautifully encapsulated in this bottle.

Oh wow. Let me say upfront that I love this stuff, it is absolutely beautiful. But I am not at liberty to say what this smells like in a public place like this because it is triple x-rated. I have smelled perfumes that are even more animalic than this, so this perfume does not scare me at all. But like I said, there is something in here that is very specific and too erotic to mention. I've already said too much!

I want to own this for its addictive musky floral scent, but I would have to be in a very particular mood for it. I'm not talking about a romantic mood, but a mood where I would be ok with walking around with constant reminders of what this smells like. Kind of like Fiore d'Ambra, the scent of a woman's skin. Well this is the scent of a woman's (and man's)...something else....Woah.

I might be tempted to call it raunchy, but it is too beautiful to use such a demeaning word.

Mr. Jedi, don't be afraid - this is a unique and beautiful creation from SL. I feel that reviews are often like people's attitudes, the more dramatic it/they are, the more attention they get. I have smelled plenty of "strong" or "offensive" scents that have often fallen quite short of their eccentric reviews (i.e., Kouros, Al Oudh, Le Labo's Oud, this fragrance, etc.). The only one close to it's nightmarish reviews was Secretions Magnifique...it just smells wrong! Give this one a try - it can range from an absolutely gorgeous indolic floral musk to a sweaty indolic cumin and musk, it just depends on your skin! And, as always, wait fragrances out for at least a half hour before you judge - I swear people take a sniff on a paper strip and write reviews as if that is all a fume has to offer.

In the search for an Uvuljuu, the great Khaan dismounts his horse at the relief of his men. His extravagant cashmere attire creased by the lengthy horseback back journey through the land of the horses. In his glory there he sits at the foot of the fire besides him the cub of a snow leopard brought back from his journeys. The cub playfully swiping his padded paws on the great Khaans attire and brushing against his lower limbs letting off the scent of its thick coat directly up into the nose of the Khaan himself as if to state. I am yet to be tamed.

Now the fragrance :p

On myself i smell musk, civet and a resinous tone of which respected amounts have been added for them to be perfectly in harmony with one another. All seem to be tamed by a further animalic tone to give this fragrance its undertone, a somewhat of a binding scent.
What this equals to is a smell that i describe as a sweet sweaty scent not harsh in anyway but moreover smoothly contrasted throughout. A definitive masterpiece. Something i would only wear on a cold intimate night or once so often to remind me of what a fragrance this is. It does have a certain allure to it and mystique.
This may smell slightly different on different people but this is how i would describe the fragrance after trying it on myself. Furthermore a friend seemed to like it very much so and said it reminded him a little of Amouage Fate, which i also have the pleasure of owning.

This is correctly noted as unisex. I contacted Serge Lutens directly and ALL their perfumes are unisex as they should be. I do not need anyone's guidance as to what to wear, I wear what I like and this happens to be my signature perfume. Along with pure natural ambergris and deer musk, it is my favorite fragrance to wear. For those of you who do not like musks and other animalics I perfectly understand why you would find this perfume abhorrent. I happen to find anything light, fresh, sporty, or with an ocean or ozone note revolting, but even pure raw civet smells nice to me and when you first spray Muscs Koubläi Khan on, one of the first things that hits you is sure not the Moroccan rose, you catch the musk along with the sweet balsamic amber and the clearly fecal civet further dirtied by cumin. I know that rose is in there somewhere but this is not about flowers, this is all about the musk and animalics. I have so often read where people ask in what perfume civet can most clearly be smelled and this is it, in Tabu it's hidden in it's nest, in Jicky it's in a cage but in this it's running around wild with its tail high in the air. Sure, the fecal note of the civet is a dissonant note but as it contrasts the sweet notes of the cistus, ambergris, Moroccan rose, amber and vanilla, it creates a brilliant contrast and then the musk ambrette, castoreum, ambergris and civet provide three distinctly different musk characters that compliment and contrast each other while the background of the sweet balsamic resins provides a rich background. For me this perfume perfectly meets my expectations for a musk perfume and does not leave me wishing something were added to it or that something had been left out. If I only had one perfume to wear the rest of my life, this would be it.

I tested this one today, and based on the reviews here I was expecting an explosion of sweaty buffalo-man beast who'd dribbled on himself in his haste to get out of the port-a-loo and back to fertilising the fields.

I got none of that. Go figure.

For me, there is a definite resemblance to Molinard Habanita EDP. It has the same incensy vibe and I'm not sure which combination of notes is responsible for that . But there you go, skin chemistry...

Perfectly wearable IMO, but do test first.

My first impression was; what on earth is everybody talking about?
I got a rather old-fashioned, well-behaved musk. Pushing my nose close to my skin, I get something faintly indolic. No skank, nothing scandalous, but the smell of someone who's been doing manual labour all day and haven't showered yet.

Second impression: It smells like skin. Like lying exhausted on the couch after a fantastic summer day of hiking with a big hairy man you happen to be very much in love with and are comfortable enough with that you don't need to rush for the shower before snuggling up with him for a while. (Yup, I'm projecting).

I wouldn't wear it as a perfume, as I my life includes enough of outdoorsy activities for me to experience (and I suppose, smell of) this type of scent without paying for it. I prefer my fragrances "clean". I like it though, simply for the memories it invokes.

It will be a hard task reviewing a fragrance with such colorful (and sometimes, scary, hilarious, or both) reviews everywhere. But I will do my best here.

When I first tried Muscs Koublai Khan, I was already aware of its bad reputation. Anyway, my weird skin chemistry tempted me to accept the challenge, and I’m happy I did. This has been on my top 5 since I got it, and I’m afraid it will remain there for longer. At the store, when I picked up the tester, the SA told me that it was one of her “Lutens worst sellers” just to tell me, one minute later, that she was surprised of how it really suited me. After running a few more errands and testing its drydown, I returned to the store and got a bottle.

Muscs Koublai Khan, as its name says, is obviously a musk fragrance, skanky and animalic. There is no “laundry detergent” vibe here, this one has claws and balls. If you are looking for a clean musk, please look elsewhere, you won’t find it here. The list of notes includes: civet, castoreum, costus roots, cumin, labdanum, moroccan rose, ambergris, ambrette seeds, beeswax, vanilla and patchouli.

It smells pretty tame on my skin, but your mileage may vary. It opens with an outrageously high dose of “skank”: civet, castoreum and cumin. But these notes are very well balanced, sweetened by honey and amber. It smells warm and sweaty, as in “unclean”, but without smelling exactly “dirty”. Later in the drydown, the rose becomes more noticeable, but it is more like a rose incense, instead of dewy rose petals. It keeps changing throughout the day: sometimes skank, others smoky rose and then, out of the blue, a well-worn saddle leather. People can say they dislike this scent, but they can’t say it’s boring.

I see Muscs Koublai Khan is a unisex scent, probably one of the most unisex among the Lutens. The sillage is enormous, so please, apply with caution. Since it can survive a shower, I would say that the longevity is more than outstanding. May be too rich for hot summer days, when the heat keeps the rose and incense aspects barely noticeable and highlights the honeyed skank.

This fragrance is a strong musk fragrance. I've tried other musk fragrances and this one is quite different. I'de say it's a musk fragrance on steroids. It's very musky and animalic, plus slightly sweet. I also detect a hairspray-like component in the smell of this. I ordered a sample of this to try out, because I heard it has a Cumin note in it. This is not for the faint in heart even to those that have tried musk fragrances in the past. Maybe some people might be led to believe that this fragrance would be good to wear while going to a bar or nightclub to attract and pick someone up or vice-versa. IMO, I don't think so.! I wonder if this does attract other people? I think I'm going to use up this sample when I exercise, as I don't think it's good for anything else.

I first read about Muscs Koublai Khan by Serge Lutens in the book Perfumes: The Guide by Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez a few years ago, I finally tried this out! I enjoy reading reviews on this scent, they are really hilarious!

Musc Koublai Khan is a very over the top dramatic, sensual animalic fragrance. All of these notes in one perfume scares me: civet, castroneum, cistus labdanum, musk mallow, ambergris, and cumin but I just had to experience it at least once and then I fell in love with MKK, yes it smells like urine and ass, still it is impossibly gorgeous. I love it.

The opening is very harsh, it is like opening the door to a porta a john and being hit with the hot stench of urine and everything scent related that comes with the port a john. Most people would want to wash this off at this point but the top notes need time to transform into a beautiful sweet civet/musk, leathery, powdery scent. I think that it is a bipolar scent because the opening is different from the drydown but the drydown makes up for the opening for sure!! I sense the majestic amber, sugar, and vanilla musk. There is a spice accord that I cannot identify. I adore the rose, it is a bit dark covered in dirt, perhaps something resembling urine. With a little research of my own I found out that the "leather" note comes from the labdanum, there is leather here alongside the earthy, musty patchouli, the patchouli is very heavy on my skin. The drydown is a very delicate musky vanilla. This is the only way I can clearly articulate about this scent.
The longevity is insane and the sillage is very soft. This scent is so seductive!
It is a love it or hate it kind of scent. Try a sample, don't blind buy.

Funny how Kouros has been mentioned a few times here, yet nobody put it in the "smells like" list. I'm amazed at how close it is, both sporting heavy quantities of civet. While MKK lacks the honey, leather, aldehydes and cinnamon of Kouros, it does share the civet, musk, patchouli, and floral notes. Maybe my nose is more sensitive to those. Where MKK notably differs is the predominance of rose and less sweetness (due to honey in Kouros). It also doesn't hang on nearly as long as Kouros.

As for similarity to Kiehl's Musk, this is only in the initial blast and when sniffing from the bottle. The musk and rose accord is strong at first. But as the rose begins to die down, the impression shifts and while similarity to Kiehl's Musk fades away, a similarity to Kouros emerges. Kiehl's has no civet. No amber. Just musk, patchouli, and rose in common. The rose in Kiehl's is strong enough to compete with the musk as it does in the start of MKK.

Anyway, I know some people can't stand direct fragrance comparisons (let each fragrance stand on their own), I can't resist and really see no problem with that. It's all about relating note associations. Some core accords are appealing and repeat in various fragrances.

It does feel to me like having both Kouros and MKK could be construed as redundant, once MKK dries down. But they really could be considered flankers of each other in my book. Let them stand on their own. Do make a point of sampling BOTH, because they are remarkably well made and worth knowing.

Fragrance: 9.1/10, Longevity: 6/10, Value: 7.5/10.

@Browne54 Last month I saw a 50 Ml bottle on Barney's website for 150 USD. When I went to purchase it a week later it had vanished You can get a 75Ml bell jar from Serge Lutens website or a 50Ml spray bottle from Première Avenue for around 149 USD. I just got the 50 Ml from Premiere and was very happy with their service.
PS The 75 Ml bell jar is approx $310 USD

browne54, the scent hasn't been discontinued. However, it's one of the Serge Lutens non-exports, so the only way you can get a new bottle is by going to Paris or ordering from the SL website. (You could also try eBay, or if you just want a decant look into a perfume sample/decant website like Surrender to Chance.)

After reading all of the very entertaining reviews of this provocatively fearsome scent I was a bit hesitant to open the bottle. I needn't have been. While the initial burst upon application may indeed conjure the image of a rose in a hobo's underpants it quickly settles into a warm combination of rose and cumin over a powdery musk. I feared it would clear a room, but my male coworkers, who rarely mention my fragrances, said it is the best one of all of the scents I have worn recently.

I like to layer this with another notoriously divisive SL fragrance Fumerie Turque.
It also combines nicely with Paul Smith Rose, Tauer's L'air du Desert Marocain, CDG Incense Avignon. I wore it to the movies today and had my nose buried in my sweatshirt the whole time, inhaling this magnificent scent

Update: I mixed equal parts Muscs Kublai Khan and Fumerie Turque in an atomizer with just a touch of by Kilian Rose Oud. Perfection!

I can't figure this one out: at 1st spray, it has a lovely albeit strong golden, honeyed, muskiness: not for everybody, but not necessarily offensive. And then it dries down, and it starts to smell like armpit. Amber and vanilla armpit, which is admittedly not at all a bad smell for an armpit, but maybe NOT SO MUCH FOR A PERFUME.

My head, it explodes.

After reading all the reviews, I must admit I was intrigued, so I sent for a sample which arrived today.

When I was 8 I went to visit a monastery (Gran's idea of a fun day out). The building was very grand, centuries old, and had a dark interior. The scent of frankincense permeated the stone walls, and the monks smelt strongly of it. They also smelt, I don't know, dusty. This is what Koublai Kahn smells like to me. With a bucket load of musk thrown in for good measure.

I can definitely smell clean but sweaty groin area, it's not particularly unpleasant, but it is strange, and very masculine.

I'm not getting any fecal matter, or filthy urinals. No barnyard or camel. I'm not getting the afterglow of an hour hot raging passion (seriously? who the hell smells like that).

I've been snuffing this stuff on my wrist for some while now, and it's slightly acrid and musky.

Not really doing it for me unfortunately, and I really wanted to love it. It makes me smell like a Lancastrian monk, and as a woman it's not the impression I'm after really.

Update: It now smells like gerbil cage.

Update 2: I've just had a bath, and after I'd dried off I smelled my wrist. What can I say? It smells beautiful, like clean skin but really sensuous! So the answer seems to be, spray or dab liberally, then jump in the shower/bath, and wash it off! If it was cheaper, I'd probably buy some and do that, but it isn't so I won't.

Another SL to love--if you're into skanky armpits and groin, sweaty-thighs after the gym, with yes, a bit of barnyard. This is sex in a bottle, the kind of sex after a night dancing and mingling with armpits after everyone's cologne mixes with a little sweet and honey and musk and amber. Or, the kind of sex after a day in the hot sun out in the garden with a spicy, earthy dirty sweetness--afternoon sex. Personally, I love it. Of course I did grow up on a ranch with a lot of animals in the great outdoors, so perhaps it's recalling that. There is a hint of rose-cleanliness and sweetness in there, but mostly it's the amber that makes the armpit wearable. I bought this after other experiences with musk that were okay, good, not memorable, but good 'ole 70's cheap musks. This isn't. Too, there was the incentive to buy it after blind buying "Lovely" SJP which sounded so wonderful online, and a more conventional musk--alas, I cannot smell it at all; that's how lovely it is. So in my search I fell back on SL, and I'm very happy I did. I don't know that I'd wear this during the day unless I was trying to seduce one of my COLLEGE-aged students or fellow academicians, and it almost seems pointless to wear on a date that you know is going straight to the sheets (after all, you'll get the scent soon enough). Yes, this would be the scent I'd wear to encourage lascivious thoughts of the unwary. In the drydown it is much more amber and resinous, losing the musky blast. Longevity is very good--not great, and the sillage is moderate--so someone may have to come close enough to perhaps smell your actual armpit sans deoderant--but what a treat!

There are a lot of perfumes, many famous and gorgeous, that list civet as one of their notes: Chanel #5, Joy, Amouage Gold...if you've got the money, civet in small doses brings a depth to a perfume that would otherwise be lacking, takes the edge off of sweetness and makes it something rounder and fuller, more beautiful than pretty.

It takes a lot of brass to put civet front and center in your composition, though. There's no way around it: in large doses civet is mangey, raunchy, rank, dirty...smell a tester of the stuff straight sometime and far more colorful words will probably leap to mind, "ass" being perhaps the least profane of the lot. It is a scent that you will need to think about very carefully before you commit to wearing it.

In Muscs Koublai Khan the civet comes on very strong, ahead of the musk, and when you keep smelling to get to the musk, it suddenly pops back up and nails you again. And the remarkable thing is that it stays this way for hours, the musk sweet and pleasant but in no way powerful enough to be the first thing you smell. Hours, I'm not kidding you-this is an all-day pefume. Toward bedtime the civet will finally yield primacy to the musk by becoming a less in-your-face but still noticably animal urine/honey smell.

The scent works well with the name, and easily conveys the idea "I am too busy ruling one fifth of the inhabited world to bother changing my shorts that often." I love it, but even I, so fond of pervy perfumes, wouldn't wear this just any place, or in very liberal quantities.

This is why I love Serge Lutens...

Muscs Koublaï Khän is a wonderfully animalic, raw but also a very soft, gorgeous scent. I really love this one, for a lot of reasons. I think mainly because I love to be challenged and I love the smell of classic perfume, like Jicky and Shalimar. I love the way those earlier perfumes were both soft and dirty and sensual all at the same time. Muscs Koublaï Khän and Musc Ravageur remind me of that.

I actually think that this one is much more authentic and raw than Musc Ravageur. I really get the honey and civet here. What Muscs Koublaï Khän is all about, is Honey and Civet and Rose and spices. In the beginning I get the florals and Musk side by side. It dries down to a beautiful Amber and Patchouli base. I don't get the Cumin but I do get the Ambrette seed and Caraway seed. Basically I would describe this as a spicy Rose fragrance. Nothing sweaty or "fecal" about it (as others have mentioned). This reminds me of sexy warm skin. Warm with perfume and a little hint of sweat, but not really too dirty. As others have said, it smells "intimate" and more than a little sexual. I think it's fantastic.

I would say a little application goes a long way. This is actually a fantastic dirty and spicy Rose fragrance, and very sexy to wear. I think anyone could wear this, male or female, and it would go well with fine clothes when you are all dressed up. It's powerful but soft, and sexy and seductive. This is why I love Serge Lutens, it makes me feel that real perfume is still being made even today. Be patient with this one, and perhaps you will see the beauty inside the beast. Beauty and sensuality, just pure joy.

I'm surprised not to see leather listed as a note. Maybe it's just my inexperienced nose, but what I got from Muscs Koublai Khan was a deep, smoky (leaning towards charred), eastern street-market leather, with its barnyard-reminiscent, unwashed aroma. It felt warm, dark and masculine (that is not to say "pour homme").

It's beautiful, mysterious and sensual (rather than sexual). I even think I would wear it, even though it's quite unlike the perfumes I usually wear. I imagine this is the kind of fragrance the Marquis from Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" would wear.

Initially smells like (good) intimacy. I need to clarify that it does not smell rotten or vulgar but slightly sexual. Hardly sensual. Smells like you finished and didn't freshen up or wash your hands after they were exploring the rear side of your partner. After that it becomes sweet and slightly synthetic. Good job, you creep.

I have been searching for perfume that I could really connect with. I knew what I wanted, something that smelt warm, sensual and sexy. I wanted something that smelt like it could be how my skin naturally smelt. I didn't want anything screechy that screamed to everyone I was wearing perfume. I didn't want my femininity and sexuality forced upon me by marketing and popular opinion... I didn't want to smell like I'd just rolled in a huge vat of flowers. I am a woman. I am not a flower. Crazy, right?! Anyway, I'd read about Muscs Koublai Khan and was intrigued. From some reviews I read, it sounded like exactly what I was looking for, whilst others told me it smelt like sweaty balls, poo, old ladies smokers breath... you know what I mean. Eventually I decided to get a sample. Oh. My.... Muscs Koublai Khan is just...beautiful. This is exactly what I've been searching for. I absolutely adore this. I think I could have this and only this for the rest of my days. I get none of the vileness other people speak of. I could see how perhaps if you drench yourself in the stuff it might be quite confronting. A light spray is divine. Throughout the day I get little wafts of this beautiful, warm, sensual smell. I don't think it's at all offensive to other people...but even if it were I would still wear it because it doesn't project far at all and I like that about it. I honestly don't know why this has the beastly reputation it has. Is it really "skin chemistry"? Do people just overspray? Or is it perhaps that we are so far removed from the natural world; so cleansed and disinfected that anything that smells even slightly "human" is offensive and confronting? I'm not sure. What I do know is that this fragrance is unique and yes, I believe it is a work of art. It certainly won't be for everyone but if you're intrigued, give it a try. I haven't met the loathsome beast some proclaim this to be; I have met his soft, warm, sensual, subtle and benevolent brother. Perhaps there is an evil twin awaiting to jump out at me but after a month of testing, I doubt I will ever meet him! I have purchased my very first bell jar and I can't wait for it to arrive. Come to me my precioussssssss ;)

Bracing myself for the animal screech of civet, I bravely prepare to spray on my sample of Muscs Koublai Khan, generously gifted to me by a dear Fragrantican friend who told me he "loved me some stank." Going by the name I was expecting something very imperial, majestic, or even terribly warrior-like that only Genghis Khan could possibly wear. Going by the civet note vote above, I was expecting something downright formidable.

Psshhhtt! Psshhhtt! Psshhhtt! Three sprays. I figured if I was going to do it at all, then do it right. Awestruck, I smell only a hint of anything animalic--perhaps just a twitching of whiskers. Fresh, clean guinea pig cage floor, before the guinea pig is even housed inside. Barely a hint of soured sawdust around the edges.

Then waves of musky, botanic labdanum. Gorgeous, powdery and filtered with amber breath. And a few crushed caraway seeds that lend a trace of a sour, bitter tang.

A hint of rose and a handful of soft patchouli in the drydown closes Muscs Koublai Khan with a feeling of sweet-skinned, rich suedes of sovereign quality.

For reasons unknown, my skin must have scared off the fiersome warrior that I was expecting to encounter, which is too bad because I came to the battleground armed and ready.

There are a number of scents that I’ve considered central to my collection for some time which, for whatever reason, I’ve never felt the need to review in the same manner that I review other scents—probably because my evaluation of them was finalized long ago. Serge Lutens' MKK is one of those scents that I've never had to question as anything less than a masterpiece and it’s probably one of the most impressive accomplishments of modern perfumery.

If you’re reading these reviews of MKK, you probably have a sense of what this fragrance is about—or at least the “eww, gross” discourse that surrounds it. Yes, it’s carnal; yes, it’s a lurid; yes, it makes adherents of “fresh” and "sugary" scents start to cry. But despite the hyperbole, it’s an astonishing articulation, and quite possibly Sheldrake’s finest moment for the brand.

From start to finish, this is musk as it should be—entirely animal with every “challenging” note of perfumery folded into it. It pushes against the borders of decorum in a bold way, yet never quite crosses the line. And that’s its brilliance; it’s entirely suggestive of some hardcore, vigorous human interactions, but it’s all an implication. It’s as if every dirty odor imaginable has been distilled with the most inexplicably appealing aspects extracted and showcased. There’s a facet of unwashed junk, a facet of indole, and a facet of decay, yet none of them smell off-putting in the slightest—instead, they’re rendered as magnetically alluring and distinguished on the skin. And that’s what makes the scent so special: the dexterity with which it walks a fine line between good taste and depravity. Outside of the musk, it’s essentially a polite floral with a slight resinous backbone. The florals (a minor rose) are subdued, but you get the impression that they’re critical the overall structure. It’s a tad powdery and, even at the time of its release, it felt like a bit of a throwback scent. Yet, ultimately, it's timeless.

Because of the imagery that the scent evokes, it’s simply not that versatile—you don’t want to wear this to the gym, for example. But there are plenty of places where it’d be entirely suitable (use your imaginations). And in that sense, it could even be rendered quite formal. Completely unisex, completely provocative, and technically show-stopping. Sixteen years after its release and it’s still the touchstone and the model musk fragrance—it’s just that good.

Wow, so this is the dread musk monster... I bought a sample of this after reading so many reviews describing lewd, crotch-y, animalic overbearingness, and then wussed out of testing it.

Actually I'm pleasantly surprised, this reminds me of a very specific thing from childhood. Long ago in the 40s, my grandmother's brother brought back two little tins of Indian perfume wax, which held their scents for decades until I got around to smelling them. One was rose based and the other, I now know, was musk. So for me this is powerfully nostalgic.

It smells warmly musky, and the civet is present but not harsh or fecal to my nose- it's gentler than my Shalimar EDT. There's something heavy and 'oily' about this, but not in a bad way. It's bitter yet warm, I get a bit of the cumin, but it's in the background.

I guess I could see an erotic side to this, but to me it smells more peaceful. Maybe the peace after the passion?

The first Serge Lutens I've really been blown away by, I want a bottle of this dang it!

Like the previous reviewer said in small doses can be erotic but in large doses you will smell like a hobo sprayed down with rose perfume. I love it. Stop saying this smells like Kiehl's Musk b/c it doesn't. Kiehl's Musk smells like YSL Kouros.
Now that that's been put to rest…
Serge Luten's MKK smells like sweat. More specifically the sweat between a man's inner thighs. Quite heavenly in subtle doses and especially in private, yet utterly obscene in large amounts out of doors.
A "give my love to the sunrise" type of scent that evokes primordial, erotic urges. A rare gem in an increasingly antiseptic industry.

Cor! Not for the faint hearted. This opens with a massive wallop of an overt, unapologetic outrageous sex smell – I mean – really, I am British for heaven’s sake. However, that subsides and what emerges is a beautiful soft sweet musky smell – still sexy but much more demure – it’s like an orgasm and afterglow in a bottle – no foreplay whatsoever. I know this has had mixed reviews but if, like me, you’re a SL fan and like the heavier, headier perfumes I highly recommend this. It ROCKS.

As I was playing around with layering perfume the other day, I discovered MKK is beautiful layered with Dalal by Al Rehab. Dalal is all about vanilla and caramel, which mixes great with the animal scent of MKK. Together, they create the perfect blend of sweet and dirty.

Ah! Koublai Khan! I don't even normally like civet in perfumes, but this is just such a fabulous musk. I bought this with my first load of Serge samples, and it made by far the largest impression on me. Honestly, my first reaction? Actual laughter....I just couldn't get passed the indolic opening, it smelled so fecal it was actually hilarious to me, and yet strangely intriguing, beguiling. I kept sampling, and within a few tries I seemed to get the joke ;) I honestly fell in love with the beautiful sweet roses and deep musk, I find the description on the official website to be entirely accurate (if not eloquently put) by the master himself:
'Valuable furs were spread for the Emperor of China to tread on, muddy boots and all.

Ultra-animalic musks and all kinds of tanned hides make a sensational debut in this fragrance. Pay no attention to their aggressiveness: once on the skin, they retract their claws in favor of padded paws.'

I recently ordered a 5mL bell jar decant as I was afraid of buying a full bottle when it had been so long since I had used my sample... Well I shouldn't have worried. As soon as I ripped the tape off and opened the cap, it was like being greeted by a familiar face. I immediately smiled... It just feels like this is what I should smell like. I guess that is poop to some people!

Edit: And upon revisiting, I wanted to mention also that projection is a lot stronger than I originally thought. I don't know if I will wear this often in public only as it feels almost too personal, too intimate. I do so love it.

I found and tried it today (on paper strip only).

After all I´ve read I expected something that may be nearly as shocking (and unpleasant not to say disgusting) as Oud 27.

But it was not. It was very very warm and comfortable right from the opening. To may nose the ambery notes (including labdanum) were dominating, but without making it an amber pefume! There were some slightly spicy aspects and a subtle but rather masculine patchouli as well. The only 'musky' note I get should be the ambrette seeds, maybe I am anosmic to the musk molecules used in this one or it just because I only sampled it on paper strip so far. I don´t know if there are very different civet replacements available, but I do not get the civet note like I expected it, though it´s the most dominating note according to the votes above. But there is something I can´t categorise, something warm, almost lulling, I couldn´t put my finger on. Could this be the civet accord, a very different civet to the ones I know?

Anyways, I will definitely come back and try this on skin! It is a very promising one and totally different than I expected it.

I have to say I was waiting for a beastly smell to unleash itself on my loved ones and instead I'm left with a cuddly, musky, light floral and rose scent. I'm obviously not amping the animalic side of this one as it's really not that apparent to me at all. On me this is not even as strong as Kiehl's Musk. After reading a few blog reviews it seems as though people either get the cuddly musk response or the full on animalic blast. Maybe the perfume has been changed a lot over time? It's definitely not an Absolue Pour le Soir scent - now that is a blast of barnyard. However I really like MKK as I find it an easy to wear comforting perfume.

Based on the crazy reviews alone I had to try it. I really enjoy this fragrance. It opens very powdery, almost feminine/barbershop clean smell. Next it dries down for a light soft spice that stays close to the skin. Not a "notice me" fragrance. I don't know why people say it smells like dirty underwear. I do smell a very faint cumin/civit smell, but you would have to actually search for the "dirty" to actually find it - not blunt and apparent like other reviews. I like this scent a lot. It is a nude skin fragrance. I think SL MKK has a subliminal pheromone property to it that is outwardly clean and powdery, but up close, it smells like sex. Sweaty, unapologetic animalistic sex. It has that little something extra that is enchanting. It works well with my body chemistry.

OVERRIPE MUSC

Talk about a funky opening? LIke a newly dead mouse, but hidden far enough in the wall that it's not yet foul.

By the time you get to the rosy/musc dry down - who cares? You still have to get thru an hour of olfactory torture.

I am known to enjoy a stinker or two, but there are stinks that I can wear & others that are strictly for a trip down my olfactory memory lane. MKK is the latter, for me.

Vintage Jicky has claws & bite that I learnt to love but MKK just doesn't sit well as a "wearer" for me.

One sniff & I am back in the depths of winter at silly o'clock surrounded by my beautiful steaming girls. The ladies in question are a charming bunch of cows which I am set to milk. There's the smell of fresh dung (which I do not find disgusting), their sweet, bovine hay-breath & the aroma that comes from warm, unwashed animal bodies.

Later, as the scent progresses I am treated to a whole memory dose of an elderly relative's stale morning breath and dusty cats paws.

Finally, I am left with the clean, skin-soft rosey musk - the beasts locked safely away in their byre.

Unlike some, I find MKK far less disturbing than other stinkers...yet probably less wearable.

My boyfriend, with a greater musk sensitivity, hardly had to get near my arm before saying, "Panties, but not in a good way".

This is one you scent you have to try.

I just got a sample of this and it DOES NOT smell anything like fecal, animal, or barnyard, hay, manure, beast, sheep, goat, semen, crotch at ALL!! It smells like what a 80-85 year old grandma would wear on a sunday. Its smells cheap, gaudy, and loud. I wanted it to smell like crotch and it didnt, what a let down. Tom Ford Black Orchid smells more like crotch, but I wanted something more intense.

So finally I get a sample of this stuff and spray it with a great deal of trepidation.
I have been looking for skanky musk. Indeed, the first blast is very musky, very sweaty male. I liked it a lot. It certainly sat very close to my skin though.
An hour later I asked one of my daughters what she thought
"It's quite nice, it smells like grandma"
I was slightly confused. I couldn't remember my mother smelling like sweaty men.
"what do you mean, like grandma" ? I asked
"like grandma's dogs" came the reply" but it's not offensive"
My mother has a lot of dogs.

An hour later I smelt my arm again and all I got was a very, very faint whiff of talc.
Why is it that so many perfumes turn into talc on me?

Anyway, a promising start, poor silage and longevity though and most importantly I do NOT want to go round smelling of my mother's dogs!

The very first time I smelled this I got the dirty body odour smell loud and clear. Then it began to soften and after an hour I couldn't stop sniffing my wrist. I used up my sample and craved more in the following months. I now own a bottle and find it simply delightful, not dirty, not fecal at all. And I have happily worn it in public knowing it doesn't project too far and is unlikely to cause offence unless you overdo it. 2 sprays is plenty

After the first thirty minutes of barn smell, this becomes the most amazing scent: a little bit woody, a little bit spicy, and a whole lot of coziness. It stays close to my skin and smells natural- not offensive or off-putting in any way. Because of this, I would say this is a truly unisex fragrance. It reminds me of the quilts my mother kept in a cedar chest- warm and homey. It is sexy, not an in-your-face aphrodisiac scent, but rather that of a familiar body you can't get close enough to. Such a beautiful scent- it makes me happy to be me when I wear it

Wow. This is weird and wonderful.

On me MKK starts off with a huge, almost eye-watering blast of flowers. In a few seconds the flowers are joined by sheep. Yes, bleating sheep grazing on a flowery meadow. This really threw me the first time I tried the perfume. It's not an unpleasant smell, only slightly confusing; do I want to walk around smelling like a farm?

But in about 20 minutes the sheep have all but disappeared and, oddly, I miss them. What remains is a pleasant skin scent of muscs and roses and just a hint of civet and of something else, something dirty and kinky and exciting.

The thing about MKK is that it makes me feel beautiful and extremely sensual. Do I wear it to work? Yes. The essence of perfume stays so close to the skin that the only thing my colleagues will smell is a light, clean musky rose scent. The kink is mine alone.

The best way to describe MKK for me would be : unique, bold , refined and evocative. Immediately after the first spray you wonder if the civet is too strongly represented, but it very quickly blends with a strong musk and patchouli presence, which lasts for hours. You keep getting spices and amber right through in varying degrees, it is almost as if this scent has a mood of its own, and like other SL scents, it responds heavily to your own mood and body temperature. An absolute masterpiece which I will never tire of.

"Lions, tigers, and bears! Oh my!"
-The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Muscs Koublai Khan is dirty, rude, dominating, sensual, primal, sexy, and majestic. Surprisingly, it's also discrete.

MKK was my first niche fragrance purchase, and it also happens to be the fragrance I wear most often. As much as people claim it's not safe for work/wearing in public, I've never had any complaints about it (which is a bit disappointing). It smells woodsy, masculine, and resinous on my skin, but also very animalic (which I love). It's the smell of a noble beast sunbathing in a garden of fragrant oriental flowers, the air scented with smoke from opium and fine incense.

You may be asking yourself "If it smells so animalic, why haven't you gotten any complaints about it?", and the answer is simple: it doesn't project much.

Muscs Koublai Khan is a skin scent. Nobody is going to smell this on you unless they get close enough. That being said, this happens to be the fragrance that gets me the most female compliments. Generally speaking, anyone who gets close enough to smell it on me tells me it smells great.

As with any especially animalic fragrance, Muscs Koublai Khan isn't for everyone. If you think Kouros smells too dirty, MKK is definitely not for you.

I for one love Muscs Koublai Khan because of its potential to shock and offend. The perceived rudeness, sexuality, and animal qualities of MKK makes me feel like an alpha wolf when I wear the stuff.

I wanted to find the sleeping beast, I sought out the sleeping beast, but I only found the rose garden, and the roses were all made of candy. I lament. I don't even like candy.
The problem, I think, is that all musks so far end up smelling samey, like syrupy roses on me. I'd take sweaty horse over this sweetness, I promise; I'm that disappointed with my body chemistry and the overall situation.

The idea of animalic scents intrigues me endlessly, but so far I've had no success. Once, I tried a cheap musk oil and it still ended up smelling exactly like SL Muscs Koublai Khan does. For shame. And it is a shame. Animals truly smell comforting and unique. Not all of them, sure - don't think immediately of dogs or camels, but cats, for example, clean housecats smell spicy, warm and pleasant. Sleeping beasts indeed.

And me, I don't want a rose garden, I just want the beast, yet so far it eludes me. If anyone with extensive knowledge on this type of perfume and some time on their hands would drop me a line with suggestions, I'd appreciate it dearly.

Very sensual musk: imagine beautiful gracious beast sleeping in a rose garden. Yes, it’s animalic, but not dirty or sweaty – wild animals have no such qualities. This beauty is quite, but strong and stays close to the skin. It‘s similar to Musc Ravageur, but Koublai Khan is rounder and deeper (and more discreet) while MR is more playful and contemporary.

Brand new to your site and love to read you all.

I am not a pro in perfumes but...
It's been a while now that I wanted to test some Serge Lutens perfumes and I went looking at the different reviews from this perfumer.
I must admit that I became very intrigued with MKK just because of the reviews (you know... poop, balls and all;). I told myself that I wanted to test that one, just to see what it would smell on me.

So, I tested it and I fell in love with it.
Maybe it will be easier for those of you who are familiar with horses to comprehend what I will try to describe.

First wave, it smelled like a horse with saddle and all that has been running a mile on a sunny summer day. Since I love horses and their smell, well, it didn't bother me at all. Au contraire.
It was musc and a bit sweet and also a bit "sweaty".
Then the dry down became very soft and almost powdery, almost buttery. In the middle of the composition I also smelled like hay and kind of what it would smell like when you walk in a wild field in summer.

So for me, that perfum is very comforting.
The funny part is that my husband thinks the same as me when it come to the smell of this perfume. He says that it also smell "very clean"!?
My best friend (women) love the first "snif" then she looked at me with a strange look on her face and she says that she also smell like "pee"?????!!!. And at last my best friend (man) told me it smells like baby powder!!! Go figure?

It's been a week know since I have received my vial and tested it and each time I try it, I am more and more in love and will buy it.

How to review this magnificent beast? Serge Lutens Koublai Khan was my very first niche perfume and remains one of my favorites. I have the 50 ml tall square bottle, which is reasonably priced. I delayed reviewing it because I was unsure I had the words to describe it. I am still unsure.

The scent is nearly linear to me and is dominated by musk, civet, rose, and amber. Maybe some of those other things, but who could tell with this beast? And beast it is. Some other reviewer remarked that this smells the way he imagines a lion would smell; my image of lion smell isn't this, but this is what I imagine a lion would WANT to smell like if it were going to the opera.

I don't know how Sheldrake and Lutens pulled this off, but to my nose it manages to balance perfectly an overdose of animalic musk and sharp catty, almost unpleasant, civet with a dose of rose that I would normally find repulsively cloying. Somehow they join forces to emerge victorious. Magnificent, energizing, seductive, luscious, potent, and perhaps even savage. If I met a woman wearing this I might get on my hands and knees and beg to sniff her neck, deeply embarrassing both of us.

Deservedly the animalic musk that others have to be compared with. Here is what Patty White had to say on Perfume Posse: "This is the single most animalic thing of beauty I have smelled. It is not the scent of horses or sex or sweat. It is the smell of humanity. Not the idealistic or beautiful part of it only, but the real part, the well-worn place of skin and sweat and memory and emotion. I can do nothing but bury my nose in this and breathe in all the misery and joy of being human."

It is interesting how differently people respond to this smell. Presumably some of us share Sheldrake's olfactory receptor repertoire and others don't. We are the lucky ones!

Had to try it after intriguing reviews so bought a tiny sample phial. Yes, I get fecal, which does stay all day, not horrible, but it is there under the flower scents as an integral part of this scent.
So, yes, animalic, but nevertheless quite pleasant, and strong, lasts all day.
I can't say I exactly madly like it, but neither do I dislike it. I think it could just do with something to bump up the floral aspect and it would be stunning. As it is, I'm glad I tried it, but would I buy a big bottle? no I wouldn't. It has a vague aspect of 'old ladys' perfume, but I am not young and yet would like a bit more oomph, a bit more sexiness. Not a favourite but not anywhere near as vile as some found it.

So while I was speaking with my Serge rep at Barneys, I was browsing through the bell jars and decided to ask about Muscs Koublai Khan. Based on the reviews, I was anticipating the most offensive, animalic and vile substance created that could compete with Etat Libre D'Orange Secretions Magnifiques. I dabbed it and gave it a solid try, and what I encountered was nothing like the "stench so rotten" others have lamented here.

This is wonderful. It's depth and sensuality, not manure and sweat. This smells sexy in such a good way that I thought the wife had to try this -- if she detested it, I'd go back and re-examine my own take on it. She loved it. She fawned over the stuff. I'd have sworn she would have licked my wrist could she have gotten away with it, but it was a depth and sensuality that she even wanted to try herself.

I certainly picked up on the amber, rose, labdanum and spices, and the undercurrent of musks were present, but thankfully I wasn't presented with that pesky powdery dry-down that I find off-putting in so many musks. This was tolerable...no, this was lovely. Even addictive.

B.O.? Manure? Unbathed skin? None of that is here. Skunky? Not at all. Sexy? Absolutely! One note of clarification, and that was that I dabbed from the bell-jar, not the 50ml bottle. My bet is that there may be some difference (noticed that with Chergui), but this is now on my "desperately want to have" list. Please, please, please sign me up.

Yesterday I watched Jurassic Park. You know that scene when Jeff Goldblum has broken his leg and is reclining dressed all in black, still being sarcastic and sexy and swarthy? This smells like that. This was my "Musk Test". I already suspected that I was getting something different from so-called musks than most others do, and MKK confirmed it.

To me, musk smells like soap. "Skin" musks smell like fancy milled soap, and "dirty" musk smells like all-natural unscented handmade soap. Or old-fashioned Ivory, when it still smelled harsh.

MKK, to me, is not skanky, dirty, or sexy. It's a layer of wet soapdish slime, topped by a layer of heavy, old-fashioned perfume in an Oriental style, of a type that intensely doesn't appeal to me, topped by a layer of symbolic "sweat." None of the layers particularly integrate with each other (on me), and the whole smells odd and awkward. I enjoy the civet/castoreum sweaty part, but I long to smell a fragrance that really does remind me of a clean, sexy body -- and I suppose as long as fake soapy chemical musks are involved, I never will.

I really love this fragrance. When I put my nose to arm, I smell comfort. It is clean, soft and muted. It wears very close to my skin. I am nervous to wear it in public, though, because so very many people say it smells of unpleasant dirty smells. I wear it to bed, while walking my dog alone, and whenever I know I will be alone. I would wear it all the time if I was not concerned with offending folks. My husband says I smell like candy when I wear this. What more could I want?!!

I find it to be an aphrodisiac and comforting at once.
I sampled it at first and found myself very drawn to it, over and over again. Somehow the universe listened... and I found my own lovely bell jar with about a third still left in it without breaking the bank.

This was my grieving help, too. I longed for a man that I missed with all my heart. While this did not diminish the grieving and drove me insane, I was strangely comforted by this creature. I would just stick my nose to my wrist, inhale and make it through the next 5 minutes.

Sometimes I even add more skank by layering it withsomething on those evenings when I just need a bit more oomph in another fragrance.

Sillage on me is that of a skin scent, but dabbing it from the bell jar certainly accounts for that as well.

I wouldn't want to miss it. Yes, it's barnyardy, but I also find it to be a sweaty happy feeling of post-encounter bliss that reminds of me utter happiness and true love. When you and your love just manage to throw clothes back on and have yourself a lovely dinner - permeating the space being happy, blissful, sweaty and at home with one another.

The scent of a man in the morning: slight B.O. and morning breath, worn out deodorant, a twinge of sweaty boxer shorts and, um, the contents inside of those boxer shorts.

I wore this once in the summer, in polite society. MKK didn't last that long on my skin, but I was amused by the looks I got and the faces I saw people make when I walked past smelling like eau de dude. It really does smell like a man in liquid form, and for that it is totally amazing.

Muscs Koublai Khan is the BEST dirty musk hands down. I love how it has that animilac feel to it, I'm a huge fan of civet and casteroum in fragrances. I find it interesting that animal excretions have been used in perfumery and this is probably the textbook "animilac". It smells of sweating and not bathing for days (in one spray), that oddly alluring fecal note (reminds of barnyard sometimes, genitals).
It's a very "human" scent (and linked to animals).
Whereas with your florals and non-animilacs you smell "nice" this reminds you of the natural body human odor. Its kind of sexy.

MKK is amazingly mild on my skin; it smells like BO, of course, and a little like ass, but also outdoorsy and fresh. I love it and wear it to the office knowing it will not be a sillage monster, but it will get attention. On a woman, it is disarming, which I find so much fun.

This is what animalic musk is all about! The constant struggle without full success of the dirty element trying to get into the driver's seat. The clean notes win more of a "Pyrrich Victory" than anything else. MKK combined with your natural scent exudes a sexual aura around you that will create mental and possibly physical orgasms to those around you.

What a magnificent beast this is! I have two distinct impressions of this perfume.

First, it smells like I would imagine a lion to smell like. It is positively magical!

Second, it reminds me of my childhood fixing an ancient decrepit house. It smells like clean, musky animals, the remnants of sweet womens' perfumes and soaps, old sweet woods, hay and leaves in fall wafting in through the windows, dust, musty damp basement in the background, decaying fabric and pillows bleached by the sun, my father's raw vanilla cologne, sweat, labor, and pride.

My experience with this has only been pleasant and I wonder where any negative reviews could have come from. This is not a "dirty" or "skanky" scent. It is clean and warm. Musky, but only in an animalic way. It really does smell like a lion or tiger - slinking in the sun through the tall grasses. Worth every single penny!

More (remini)scent than a fragrance; it evokes certain atmosphere, scene, chapter in time, not required to embellish, decorate or pamper. This concept I'm already familiar with - Histoires de Parfums brought the idea on a whole new level by developing the fragrance line - capturing the long lost time inside the perfume bottle. Not every single creation of the line is necessarily beautiful - as the history itself - but it can surely smell new and exciting.
Muscs Koublai Khan is of that kind - to me, it develops like a puzzle-picture. Opening is a blast of minimalism; a wide immense horizon in steppe scenery depicted simply by overwhelming notes of smoke (bonfire) and ambrette (fur). In the background there's a mild hint of sweet hay (horses). In the next phase the rose (a woman) takes the center stage framed by the sharpness of cumin (to some a stuffy note, here a perfect symbol of Yurt - Mongolian tent); the composition becomes more complex, cozy and sensual, with time getting more deep, warm and almost sweet by strenghtening animalic and spicy notes (civet, labdanum). It is dirty, but not as nearly assaulting as I expected it would be; it smells extremly sexy, untamed, yet so cozy and intimate.
Being a fan of cumin and civet, to me this is heavenly; I'm able to put together and disassemble this puzzle if I want to, still I enjoy it mostly the simplest way, as it is - a beautiful dirty rose.

I guess this is just another case of where the beauty - as well as the ugliness - is in the eye of the beholder.

Went to try this one based on the reviews and was hoping for what might be an enjoyably anti social scent for when the occasion called for it. On paper it had the cumin, and the strip I held onto for a while definitely smelled like some of the descriptions here. Got the bottle because it was a great deal and waited till the right moment to try- what I get on my skin is a lovely rose vanilla tempered by a trace of powder and cumin that lasts for about an hour or so then the rose gives way to lighter florals, and the cumin is replaced by the amber. At three or four hours it goes down to what I assume to be the notorious civit cat but smells more to my nose like a slightly salty leather with a tiny hint of cocoa. Low silage after the first hour of roses. Not a result of any anosmia on my part as a number of friends found the same smell on me.
Overall I really like it, but as a discreet fragrance suitable for office or perhaps a tea party- not the mad howler I expected.
I know everyone's skin is unique, and there has been some discussion about reformulations to make this scent more accessible, but the fact that this is joining my favorites as a subdued floral alongside 31 Rue Cambon just testifies either to the brilliance of the Lutens line in adapting successfully to many individuals or to the overactive imaginations of some reviewers. I'll have to try it on a friend and let you know.

i've always had a bottle on hand for that precise time when nothing else would do. it IS a big, radiant, steamy fur that dries down to a lil wee pussy cat. musk.... plus a whole galaxy of contrasting elements (musk-rose, for starters).
this is inspired and fearless perfumery.

speaking of inspiration, i recently got the idea to layer my favourite indolic - the animalic jasmine SARRASINS - with MKK. it was wicked! so i went even further and actually combined 1/3 MKK with 2/3 Sarrasins in a spray bottle....... eureka!
close to the holy grail, to my nose at least.

I tried it today and I have to say I'm a bit shocked.
On the paper is musky but light, soft, gentle, a good fragrance with an animalic background.
But on my skin is completely different: it's dark and very animalic, but not leathery. It's musky and kinda sweaty. It's warm and a little powdery. A very wild and primitive fragrance, very sexy.

My sample was from the wax cards from Palais Royal. Disclaimer: My skin EATS light fragrance (scents like Clique Happy are gone in less than 30 minutes or so) and tends to prefer spices, woods, and 'headier' fragrances.

At Application: Bergamot and maybe a bit of rose higher off the skin. Tons of civet that for the briefest moment did smell a tad fecal-ish. But only for the briefest moment on my skin.

5 minutes in: Rose appears, a bit of patchouli peeking through, some labadnum, and a hint of spicy cumin. Still get the bergamot. Starting to like it at this point (at application it was a bit shocking).

15 minutes: Starting to feel a bit of powdery amber, otherwise no big change from the 5 minute scents. Begin to see it being wearable.

30 minutes: Patchouli, powdery amber, faint spicy cumin next to the skin over a background of the faintest civet. Totally wearable on my skin at this point. Well rounded, blended.

It brings back *memories* of Jovan musk and Oregon's Country Fair (big hippie festival). And yes, both of those are good memories!

My impression: Shocking at first application--like a bit of a slap in the face. Quickly the burn from the slap fades and you feel a little more inclined to give a second chance. By the end it is like part of your skin, close, comfortable. Like it's supposed to be there. It definitely seems a bit private, personal. Definitely could sink my nose into a neck full of this!

It seemed a bit strange, this opening animalic (Civeta labdanum and amber and also will this wave) referred to a smell of melted plastic. After a few minutes Animalic even something more, like a sweat and something kind of dirty (excrement) of animals, this perfume is sinister!

a definitely "dirty" style of a musc fragrance, i get the bodily comments, at least i do, but there is something very interesting in a good way about this scent, it would probably take some time to get used to and if you like musc in general. i could see men liking this fragrance more than a woman...but that is my take on this smell.. i like it actually, not sure that i would purchase it..don't think i would wear it enough for that. but a definite type of fragrance you should sample if possible...very interesting, i do enjoy the dry down of this one more than the opening of it. you will need patience with this one.

This is best described as a raunchy barnyard encounter captured in a bottle. There's a certain deep earthiness in this scent that sits somewhere between comforting and edgy at the same time (depending on your mood and perspective).

This scent works the wick on both ends. There's the civet and cumin that give it that undeniably funky, sweaty animalic tension, while the roses and patchouli soothe and caress. And wow, the wick burns for hours - well beyond a day at work, followed by a gym session, dinner and shower.

What's most surprising is that during the course of the day, your nose can pick up different facets of this multi-dimensional scent. Two parts warmth, three parts dirty sex and one part animal farm.

It's never linear and has a tendency to play with your mind. It's completely dependent on the wearer's association with certain cues and smells, which gives this scent another dimension beyond its listed notes.

Definitely worth a try, but proceed with an open mind.

MKK is the antithesis of the white musks that are featured in detergents as well as the Clean and Philosophy fragrance lines. If those scents appeal to you, MKK is a scent you probably should avoid.

I don't have much experience with barnyard animals or farms, but the top notes of MKK remind me of walking through Old City Philadelphia, where horse drawn carriages are numerous along with the inevitable by-products. Horsepoo has never struck me as a particularly awful smell, but I was never expecting to encounter it in the context of perfumery and therefore nearly scrubbed MKK off in a fit of pique. Luckily, I waited out the opening funk, because the heart and base of this fragrance are worth the difficult beginning.

The essence of MKK is a sensuous rosy musk laced with
warm amber and patchouli. Although I've never had the opportunity to experience the scent of real deer musk, this how I imagine it would be: not so much "dirty" as authentic and pure in the sense that it hasn't been watered down and sanitized for public consumption. Instead, what this fragrance represents to me is the natural smell of healthy skin with all the attendant hormones, pheromones and the like. MKK does not have a lot of sillage, which may have been intentional, since this is a somewhat challenging scent. Longevity is great, however, as it should be for the price.

P.S. Why is this classified as a chypre???

I tested this perfume on my wrist right before a business meeting. After the first sniff i was in awe. My first reaction was to laugh. The civet was definitely on my wrist, cuddling me up like a sweaty old blanket. But underneath this little animal there was something sweet and sensual. I think it was the rose and amber. I kept smelling my wrist during the meeting. It tickled my libido. I felt ashamed. It gives you the feeling of walking naked on the street after making love. I see it as a night perfume, for special occasions. One word to describe it: OBSCENE. I`m going to buy it :D

UPDATE: I bought it :( Oh, dear God what a disappointment! I was expecting the sexy crazy fur i fell in love with when i first tried it on my skin. And it does smell like that indeed, but for 5 minutes. After that it just fades away, and i smell like....nothing. The perfume just vanishes and leaves behind a small trace of baby powder. No civet, no rose.... :(

The only thing I could find wrong with this scent was that I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Based on the reviews I think I was expecting like an Eau de Rubeus Hagrid (Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry)all earthy and everything antithetical to American hygiene - barnyard, feet, armpits, buttcrack, and other unmentionables. I was intimidated when I got it because I thought it may not be for polite society.

This was so not the case. Everything is perfectly blended. No sharpness anywhere. Just a pretty, soft, and cozy scent. Don't get me wrong - the fragrance is a masterpiece of perfume making. Maybe old Khan had a soft side we didn't know about.

To those who say Muscs Koublai Khan smells exactly like Kiehl's Musk, what kind of skin chemistry do you have?

Kiehl's musk oil is my favourite scent. It sits close to the skin in an alluring way - with powder and floral dancing sexily with the beast (who's just taken a bath). The only thing that I dislike about it is that, yes, it's a bit linear.

So - based on many, many reviews - I figured Muscs Koublai Khan would be Kiehl's musk ramped up and sophisticated on my skin.

Oh, how wrong I was.

It was poop. From beginning to end, barnyard dung. I tried to convince myself otherwise: 'Oh, there's some delightful rose, delicate and welcoming.' But there was always the poop.

Even if it were just sitting there quietly in the background (which it wasn't - it was loud and clear and totally in-your-face), no one wants to smell like poop.

No one.

I've been awaiting the sample of this eagerly, for it's notorious and sometimes humerous Reviews.

I gasped... omg... that's something new... oh.. my...
*fwoosh* instantly takes you somewhere else.
First few seconds are Medicinal, that leathery Castorium(The opening of Chanel Antaeus has it too), then.. Strange, "sweet" Muskiness.. "Beyond sweet" something Animal. Obscene. Saliva, Fur... hay, soil, Sweet Dirty roses... Not gonna lie...this is instantly arousing to me. *blink* I dont CARE what anyone else thinks! It has that special something i've been looking for. This is it. It turns powdery.. The ultimate sweet musty skin smell. It blends seamlessly on my skin... It seems to jump instantly to that powdery Honey Musk as my Favorite YSL Kouros... but it's right there.. fuming off of me. A Whole different kind of animal, Rose of all things... that's been slobbered on. Honestly.. (please bare with me on this) it's a lot like.. feet, or socks after i had them on for a long LONG time. It has this sweet lilac floral Honey tinge that's SO comforting... This is Precious. I want to save up for the full Bell Jar.
For special occassions.... Perhaps not in public, but i suggest, try a dab on the inside of your lover's thighs... it's a "Mood" fragrance. For contemplation. I can appreciate the sheer artistry of the Serge Lutens line. Niche Fragrance?... Oh it definitely fills my Niche.
After a while the familiar civet becomes Very clear and persistent... that familiar sweet Stinking Civet cat oooooh. Yeah that's the part that's reminiscent of the fecal notes everyone keeps getting. kinda like.. when you try to wipe with a single-ply paper. So.. the impression mostly, Rose, Civet, hay, and crotch fur... that's been slobbered on.. heavily.
... this is so Obscene. I love it.

This is the third of 3 Lutens samples I got from The Perfumed Court, and I was looking forward (with some trepidation) to trying it. I too did not get any of the uric/fecal notes other people have experienced. On me it's simply...musk...There is a hint of fur, but it's not nearly the "crotch-skank" monster it is for other people. I totally agree that this one (and perhaps most of the Lutens frags) vary a great deal given individual skin chemistry and I'm one of those people whose chemistry emphasizes the "sweet" parts of a composition. I get more rose, labdanum, and patchouli, and the civet seems to recede a bit into the background as it develops on me. It doesn't project powerfully on me, lasts about 4-6 hours, and is mostly gone by the next day. It's less complex than I expected but I definitely like it and want to wear it. So I'm going to have to save my pennies for a full bottle and am rationing my sample accordingly.

A totally maculine musk, probably because - like amg7240 said - this smells like a crotch, something a woman usually don't carry. Let my add: A hippy crotch, because perfumed with Kiehl's musk oil.

I never met a man by accident wearing it, but I'd like to explore my reactions in that case.

Because it is beautiful, but it also is a statement. The wearer smells like personal body parts - might they be human male or cat or some other animal. Maybe a little offensive for most situations? Too much in your face?

On the other hand, if this should work as a women's magnet I doubt it's effectiveness, as women tend to dislike the too direct approach, am I wrong? And usually a woman like the smell of one or two crotches she has a relationship with, but not the smell of a crotch as a crotch per se?

I'm curious about how MKK works in the gay community. I imagine, therefor it's the perfect match?! Or am I trapped in clichés?

I got a free sample of this and didn't expect to like it very much, based on reviews I had seen. But after an initial tentative dab on the wrists, I was intrigued enough to apply more promptly. On me, it starts out almost herbal/grassy with the expected undercurrent of musk. Within 10 minutes it softens tremendously, becoming a rich, velvety, complex musk. I never experienced the "dirty", uric, or other even less pleasant undertones other reviewers mentioned. It's only mildly and attractively animalic on me. Duration is rather good, lasting at least several hours on me and even remaining detectable next morning if applied late in the evening. It doesn't project powerfully, but others do notice it if they are in proximity. My suspicion is that Muscs Kublai Khan, more even than most perfumes, is extremely variable with individual body chemistry; I typically turn everything quite sweet, to the point of having to avoid most fruity scents and even the more straightforward florals. My skin may be dialing down the civet and other components that could contribute to a barnyard/sweaty/underwear type note, and dialing up the rose, labdanum, and whatever other elements give it a smoother, creamier quality. Very sensual, indeed full-on sexy, but it's a warm and nuanced seduction, rather than a skanky paid companion. In sum, I would happily have a full bottle of this, but would recommend testing it on your own skin before buying.

SHORT REVIEW:

Musky and with a deep rose smell. Reminds me of my favorite incense (a floral musk, no longer made) from the 70s. Smoky, musky and floral, maybe a bit dirty but a good dirt, like a hippy that you want to have sex with. IF this smells like feces to you, what are you eating? Must be some sweet stuff... I have sampled this once and it is a must buy. A scent for a mature man, or a daring mature woman.

Oh, for those of you that think this smells like a man's crotch, let me know who that man is. I am interested!

I went from detestation to adoration in one day on this one. When I first sampled this, I thought it smelled like the underwear of a guy who hadn't showered in a couple of days, had just finished working out and who thought he'd only farted. All of that's there, but it only lasts a few minutes on my skin before it turns into a marvelously natural and dirty rose and musk scent. I adore this stuff, and I never buy into the hype on fragrances, but for me this one is great. Definitely a 'try before you buy' frag as I suspect most will not like this one. Not sure that it's worth the price, but that's probably just me because I think that about a great many fragrances. Lovely on clothes; yes I spray frags on my clothes...bite me.

I do not know which intruiged me MORE...the description and notes, or the mixed reviews for this scent. Finally, after a year or so of drooling for MKK, I was lucky enough to be gifted a sample by a VERY kind member *Thanks, dearest kastehelmi!*

AMAZING!! This is one of the most gorgeous raw stinks that I have ever smelled and just absolutely, utterly adore! This is about as musky as you can get and the civetta, along with the patchouli, makes this so earthy and skanky and gorgeous! It has some sweetness (just enough to keep it from being something akin to the stench of an invading Mongol horde) from a very soft dry rose, incensey labdanum and a warm crumbly golden amber. Again, ambrette and styrax are two of my very favorite "woody" notes in perfumes; but here the ambrette is flying solo. Its soft and musky vaguely floral woodiness is complmeneted very well by the caraway's sharp arid spiciness. I get nothing even remotely "fecal" here, whatsoever. Rest assured, if I ever found someone (anyone!) who smelled like this, while sweating, I would be as helpless as those peasants on the Steppes of Russia were! This has a magical scent that is not overly dirty, nor too pungent; it's just soooo indescribably sexy! WOW! I am sure that the name, in and of itself, comes from the oriental nature of many of the inspiring notes' sources (oriental, spicy, musky etc.) but I do feel something vaguely manly and butch going on here, as opposed to feminine or soft. One wipe from the small vial's dipstick lid, on the back of my hand, and I am detecting such a sweet mysterious animalic scent that is neither "pissy" nor reeking. More than anything MKK is drier than it is musky. It has MUSK aplenty sure, but the other notes here make it more intruiging and exotic than offensive. If this had been called "Muscs d'Amour", I am sure, it would have had many more supporters than detractors.

Sillage: great
Longevity: magnificent
Overall: 4.75/5

Hmmm...150 U.S. dollars for a HUGE botttle? This may just be worth that hefty pricetag. My sample is nearly exhausted, and I am saving what remains for some "special occasion" (winks) but this is something I will eventually add happily into my collection, regardless of the cost!! Many (here and other places) often complain that SL creations, while stunning, don't (really) last all that long. Have NO fear of that with this one! I, personally, think that if KK and his horde smelled like THIS...they WOULD have conquered the world, especially all the local girls. (And, roughly, 10% of the guys too!)

LOL

Oh, c'mon, this isn't so frightening, ladies and gentlemen!

Sure, there is a suggestion of oily, animal fur from the musk and civet but the main body of the scent is beautifully rich and languid with gorgeous roses and amber. It has an almost caramelized quality to it. It's one of my all-time favourites.

PS. Skip showers and baths for a cheaper and much more effective 'animal' effect!

This conqueror with his powerful combination of potent musks - patchouli, civet and labdanum and only the barest quarter-teaspoon of rose - has no time for the sweet, idyllic ministrations of flowery elegance. He (it seems a very masculine perfume) is stern, swift and curt in his exchange, as his concerns are for matters of the utmost gravity. If a woman wants him, she has to throw away the high heels and other trammels of restricting conventional femininity and run to keep up or he will simply leave her behind. If she catches him though, he turn and take her in his arms in a burning, loving, unforgettable embrace that lasts the livelong day and night.

This is the fragrance of favourite well-worn jeans, tee shirt and sturdy old-leather boots that can walk a long, long way into the lonely landscape of city lights or cloudy, windswept beachfront. Serious though it is, it does not dwell on the past but is confident, forward thinking and full of boundless energy...

Muscs Koublai Khan...

From the first sniff you know who was the perfumer behind it. It is very so Serge Lutens.

It took me a while to get used to his scents. Some of them take longer than others. MKK is probably not soething I would wear, but I can't say I don't appreciate its composition.

It is quite a dirty musc. Animalistic, but not sweaty. It is heavy though, too heavy in labdanum in its first phase. I sniffed my arm, and really found it unappealing. It's exotic and dangerous. At first it seemed a bit too spicy, a bit too dry, a bit too powdery. Then, a few hours later (one thing that has to be said, longetivity of SL fragrances is outstanding), it became a much quieter musky rose scent. It is still anywhere near soothing, but it looses some of its dirtiness and becomes more wearable. There is a lovely spicy rose with lots of caraway and some patchouli, and it is addictive.

Yes, it's sex in a bottle, but, hmmmmmmmm, well, I am not going to depict the imagery it portrays. Just to say, it's not at all about silk sheets and soft pillows. Forget about those. There is no room for them in MKK.

Please everybody forgive me but I don't get any fecal, sweat, rancid, camel, disgusting kind of things here. It's surely not a clean musc in the opening and can be quite challenging to someone (a lot of civet and castoreum) but it's awesome. This is MUSC as it should be (at least IMO). Not too rough or rude but neither polite and absolutely fascinating. Maybe it's because I generally don't like white muscs but I can't find a single weird thing in MKK. I simply like it from the beginning to the very end. Unfortunately I don't know many people who would wear Muscs Koublai Khan on a regular basis and if I'll ever meet one I'll make everything is possible to become at least friends. In the drydown it turns to be a bit cleaner and sweet with an animalic note (civet) that make sure that the scent doesn't get too polite. I don't see any particular complexity here but a magistrally and superbly crafted "kinda rough" musc. And really, I don't understand the post-coitum / orgiastic thing. If you smell like this after you had sex I'm Koublai Khan.

May 2011
After several full wearings I started to detect the infamous "fecal note". It's there, lurking in the back, scary and threatening but it's part of MKK's incredible charme.

This, to me, is very animalistic. It is not my type of fragrance, I suppose its the civet but I really think it does smell a bit too 'sweaty'. I normally hate when people say fragrances smell sweaty because I always find myself not getting even the faintest sweat vibe from frangrances. For example, VW Boudior is flowery and soft to me but others find it to smell like body odour ?! Anyway, for me to say it smells like sweat is really saying something. Sure its not awful and the initial blast is more musky but as it settled down I was very quick to wash it off as I was a bit embarrased people might think I smell sweaty. Maybe its my skin chemistry.

Ok I got several samples of this and it is intriguing. Very different, very sexual. It reminds me of those very private moments when you are down below with your woman. If you know what I mean. You both went for a run, came back to the room, showered, you talk, kid around, hug and kiss and then before you know it, you're aroused and can't stop. Whoa! I think the creators of this fragrance had someone in mind and decided to have fun with it. There's no fragrance out there like it. It does evolve into a sweeter scent, with musk, and the human scent. It is very well done. You just have to get past the first 15 minutes.

Muscs Koublai Khan starts with really nice soothing woody sweetness, and then very soon, there’s some really weird unrin kinda acidic, sour smells comes and goes along with the nice woody sweetness. The piss smell is really weird in an intriguing and good weird way. And as the wee smell becomes less ‘out there’, I start to detect a little bit discreet soft powdery notes there, something along the labdanum line. At this stage, the scent smells of melancholy beautifully decaying and dying from another space, an ancient Egyptian kinda place, to me.

Then the urine smell fades away gradually, its powdery musky oriental smell gets clearer. I find it’s quite comfy at this stage, like walking around in the countryside in a sunny winter Sunday and it rained the night before. It’s like smelling some decaying leaves, hay, etc on the muddy ground, along with animal faeces; but the sun is shining and even the faeces smell ok to you because the warm sun makes the morning nice, bright and even golden.

The dry down has got the weird notes all over again, as if things have went back to the start: nice soft base, now it's nicer and sweeter, musk creamier, earthier; but it comes with the urine sour smell that hurts my nose, intriguing still, but with my untrained nose, I find this rather super niche, than a scent I can even wear. I guess I might revisit it after several years. It is a bizarre but interesting experience which should not be missed, but I doubt how often and how easily I can pull it off.

Holy crap! And I mean that literally.

MKK opens with the alluring scent of a dairy farm. Hot sweaty cow bodies & manure & composted dirt. At first sniff it is that oddly enjoyable sweet dung/farm smell. But this gets monotonous fast.

And unfortunately for me, MKK does not gracefully change into a sexy swan like other luckier reviews have described. Oh no, it is ugly duckling poop fest all the way. With a sprinkling of nose-tickling dust on top.

Or as my beloved said, with a frown, upon smelling it: "Does that mean you are a heifer now?".

The first notes out of the MKK vial are a labdanum-spice-rose-patchouli combo that smells very much like an attenuated version of an Arabian musk or an amped-up version of Kiehl’s.

At this early stage it seems like there’s just a little too much of too many slightly incompatible things, in typical Lutens style. Then the civet kicks in, strong, fecal, and animalic. It marches along in parallel with the flowers and spice and patchouli, each forming its own stream, winding in and out with one or the other predominating at any given moment. The civet stays fairly close to the skin, but after about 15 minutes the sillage develops a wonderful “clean”, rosy musk scent that is strong and pervasive. Eventually the scent settles down and unifies into a soft, velvety, rosy, slightly powdery musk with just enough civet to keep it from being a “white” musk.

This excellent scent lasts the rest of the day, and longer on clothing. To me this is a prototype for musk, one that I will wear whenever I feel like a strong musky blast.

Well skinchemistry seems to be a player with this perfume. I don't get any goats fur, dirty underwear or any of that sort. On me this is a good strong sexy musk with incense. Well more of a potion of dry incense some patchouli leaves and a logfire that has been put out and layed to rest. First thing I thought of was some kind of wild forest creature running through the woods, yellow eyes, thick dark fur. I LOVE it and wear it all year round.

I don't like this one at all. It's unwearable to me. This doesn't mean it's a bad scent! Actually it's very well made in its own genre. Which genre? The one I call I'm-clean-I-just-step-out-of-shower-yet-I-want-to-smell-beasty-for-sexsake. You know, we're animal, after all. I think we humans already have enough of an animal smell.
Anyway this fragrance is absolutely interesting as a perfumery experiment.
I'm not a great fan of Serge Lutens scents as my personal scents, because I feel they are too complicated and they always have rather something more than anything less. Maximalist scents with a not always needed 1-2 bizarre note more, but Serge Lutens is genius.
I suggest you try it on your skin. These deeply musky/animalic scents smell very different on different chemistries. On me the beasty edge springs out above everything and smell almost fecal (much like Kiehl's Musk), but other skin chemistries highlight the clean soapy edge. A great luxury expensive artistic genius soap.

Dirty, sexy, lovely. Yes, this is much of everything...

Musc Koublai Khan welcomes you with a burst of manure, flowers and patchouli. Very sexy, varm and much easier to like than I tought it should be. Wouldn´t have no problems to wear this in public, yes it is dirty, but not at all overly so... It makes me feel warm, comfy and sensual. The burst of manure settles down and lingering troughtout the whole fragrance, but softer and softer... The manure makes the rose pretty, I´ve herad roses thriwe in manure? This one sure does. An absolutly must try for everyone, good sillage and longlasting. The drydown is soft, ambery and nice, but I like the beginning better...

Highly controversial, this perfume is considered a must-try for those who love dirty, sexy perfumes. After much reading of scandalous rumor, I finally got a chance to try this and was very disappointed. Rather than a raunchy, dirty sexed up amber, I got a clean, soapy musk and barnyard. The scents don’t blend, but rather switch off, first one then the other. I get dirty stalls, old hay and head-shop musk oil. Not what I was expecting at all
