New Jersey is a unique gourmand. The popcorn note is very prominent in the beginning. It's a true, yummy and salty popcorn note. Miss Dior Cherie is my all time favorite and that fragrance supposedly has caramel popcorn in it. I've never been able to smell anything but a refined, buttery undertone in Cherie. New Jersey's popcorn note however, is unmistakable. Next I get caramel, cotton candy and very soft coconut. The coconut is perfect. It's not in-your-face at all but rather hangs to back and builds on the sweet caramel. The best and most surprising thing is the patchouli. I'm not a huge patchouli lover but I wear a lot of perfumes with patchouli notes. A soft and earthy patchouli seems to really have a knack for bringing over-the-top sweetness back down to earth. The patchouli in New Jersey is very clean; you might not even notice it but it gives the base a deep and wonderful edge. Without it, New Jersey would just be another sickeningly sweet sugar bomb. I think I'm seeing a combination that I love in quite a few fragrances - patchouli and caramel. Yum. The peach and vanilla are ever so faint but they round the scent out nicely.
This fragrance starts out smelling like a carnival or a day at the state fair. As the notes settle in to each other, what you are left with is a very pretty and original gourmand. New Jersey is a summer day on a boardwalk, sunshine, fun and carefree youth. I will definitely be wearing this to the beach this summer!
UPDATE: I am officially hooked! New Jersey is just gorgeous. I've been wearing it for the last week and I adore this stuff. The longevity is excellent and the fragrance moves beautifully through every note, ending in an addictive vanilla musk that I can't pull my nose away from. Love!
Thank you to United Scents of America for providing me a sample.
Every time I think I'm over gourmand scents, I come across a new one that intrigues me.
New Jersey's notes looked like the kind of fragrance I enjoyed in my late 20s and early 30s but that I would pass over in my 40s. Upon first sniff, I was pleasantly surprised by this interesting scent.
I remember a lot of fuss over the older version of Miss Dior Cherie's supposed popcorn notes (which to me smelled more like burnt toast.) New Jersey has a TRUE caramel popcorn aroma that is neither too salty nor too sweet. In fact, it reminds me of Serge Lutens' Jeux de Peau. (Yes! You read that right!) Don't be afraid of the sweetness here. It's dosed with a careful hand, and the fragrance is very wearable and enjoyable, with good longevity (about 6 hours) and sillage.
Just got this in the mail today. My daughter and her friend said it smelled like caramel popcorn, and then exclaimed "YUM!" I love sweet fragrances, and this is the most candyish scent I own. One moment it reminds me of Christmas, then it reminds me of the Asbury Park Boardwalk (NJ Shore) of my youth...the popcorn, caramel apples, cotton candy, suntan lotion...to quote my daughter and her friend..."YUM!"
I am wearing this right now and it is fabulous! The popcorn smell is the most prominent on the top with caramel and cotton candy up there as well, but I can smell something is coming next!
I didn't grow up in Jersey, visited the shore once. Just love perfume and am so excited to be trying one that has popcorn as a note! It does not disappoint. It feels fun and sunny.
I very much appreciate that while patchouli is listed, it is very subtle! Thanks for that. The musk, vanilla and peach come through and if it were not listed, I would not believe patchouli to be in it, which for me is a very positive thing! The popcorn sticks around a tiny bit on the dry down, but most of the dry down is carmel and vanilla and musk.
If you like Prada Candy, this will blow you away. It is better lasting and much more interesting.
I can't wait to try the next one in their series. This one is going on my list to buy!
All I can think of is Roseanne Rosanadana complaining about her new polyester blouse: "that shirt was smelling like NEW JERSEY!"
Wasn't it for the dreadful patchouli, I would be tempted to order a sample of this sweet treat in order to know if it could please my really truly sweet tooth !! ^^
P.s. : I don't see anything like oil in this fragrance !! :-D
Reminds me of movie Miss Congeniality:
Q: Why is New Jersey called the 'Garden State'?
A: You can't fit "Oil and petrochemical refinery state" on a license plate?
I was born and raised in Jersey (please don't ask 'what exit'), and popcorn, coconut, vanilla and cotton candy aren't the smells I associate with a drive "down the shore". Passing the acrid smell of the landfill? That's a bit more like it. :)
