Rapture is an intoxicating, unique and complex fragrance; evoking many different moods depending on the weather, your skin chemistry, or your attire.
When worn in the fall or winter, it is cozy, warm, sensual and romantic, reminding me of a soft cashmere or angora sweater. I've also heard it referred to as a "dirty" smell; when worn in the "evening" with a sexy dress or even with just lingerie, this perfume radiates "sex". It is definitely all woman. I've been told by a European boyfriend that it smells French......unapologetically sensual and in your face sexy, like European women.
Rapture opens with a somewhat fruity yet spicy aroma and then as it wears off it evolves into an almost indescribable heady mixture of just plain femininity.
It is one of the most unusual and interesting scents ever. Much more complicated than any other VS fragrance.
My fiancee absolutely goes crazy over this and I have to wear with caution...it puts him "in the mood"!
Apply very sparingly and for a lighter version with the same feeling, apply just lotion and/or the body mist.
I love it because of the amber-jasmine, because is sweet but not too sweet and because it brings back good memories of my big sister and I. She used to have the body lotion and the cologne. She never let me even touch them, XD; she treasured them, her precious. I love my sister, and I love remembering those times when we were together, oh melancholy. I would buy this just because of that.
To me it does not smell like old Lady...(What does and old lady smells like? XD) It just smells like flowers with amber. It smells good, that's why they still have it at the Victoria's Secret Stores. Another story is that people associate this scent with women who used to wear it in the early 90's, and that still wear it now. Those women are 21 years older now, including me. I'm 35 and I love this.
This will be one of my favs til the end just like my levis 512 jeans... some may call it old ladyish but it depends on the lady... age is a number just like the 512s and I am one classy old lady that loves this old fragrance because it reminds me of the back in the day...I can take it off my dresser blow off the dust and spray it and say ahhhhhhhhhh take me back!!!
Every time I am confident enough to wear it I still get compliments as it mixes well with my chemistry and just exudes sexxxxxxxy ... deep femininity.
An image consultant friend of mine was wearing this fragrance in the body mist. She had this wonderful light musk aroma surrounding her and I could smell this when she would move around. The fragrance was light and fresh and smelled very clean.
I am now trying the perfume version of this - and this is a bit strong at first. I'm waiting to see how this dries down and if I will like it, or if I would prefer the body mist.
------------
Update, I did try the body mist yesterday and sampled this while I was out shopping. It had a very nice smell the first couple of hours. I will have to try the body mist again with a bit more focus and attention to exactly how it differs from the perfume version.
I tested this in the store and while it's got great silage (very strong, this one), there is a very powerful smell in this that is "off" to me. It may just be my body chemistry, as I normally adore rose fragrances. This one had a sourness that smelled intensely of dead, possibly moldy flowers. Within 15 minutes I found myself trying to scrub it off, to no avail. I ended up covering it with another perfume to dampen the smell a bit. Definitely a pass for me, and a disappointing one at that - having seen the notes in this I had expected to love it.
@RED347:
I loove your taste in perfume so this one obviously has got me vellly intrigued! I think it would suit my body chemistry. Wonder if they ship to Canada.. Bath and Body works did not... :(
I wouldnt consider it White Floral.
The first spray isnt inviting at all, but then
it gets very very spicy on me and lots of Amber.
If I got a whiff of it not knowing it was made by VS -that woul dbe my last guess.
Far more depth and intrigue then the scents they put out now.
I am starting to get seriously disturbed by the amount of times I'm seeing people downright INSULT each other over difference of opinion on fragrances. Everyone is on Fragrantica for the same reason: We love perfume! We do not have to love the same exact things. Imagine how dull the industry would be if we did!
Not caring for powdery fragrances does not indicate a lack of intelligence. Just as a preference for them, apparently, does not guarantee a pleasant personality! What someone enjoys smelling has nothing to do with whether they are smart or stupid or attractive or what have you. What DOES say a lot about someone's personality, however, are the things that people say to each other, particularly during a disagreement.
I did not find VS Rapture to be anything special. I did not find it to be abhorrent, either. But now every time I pick up a bottle I will be reminded of the comments below, and it will sour my opinion on this perfume as a result, to think of how ugly people have gotten in defense of it.
My sister and I both used to wear this one in the early 90's. We both loved it!!
Omg ! this maybe was sexy before 20 years ! but now I don't think so .. life has been more simple than this super heavy amber ..
Out of all VS scents I hate this .. it's very mature for me .. it's true very similar to charlie gold revlon ..
both smells cheap & heavy ..
sorry ..
Oh my goodness, this has been out forever and I just now bought a bottle! LOL Honeslty though, I was a teen in the 90's when this frag came out and this scent actually used to repulse me, so that's why I always steered clear of it. I really wish VS would make more frags like this one though; it's deep, rich and long lasting. I can see how people say its's "mature" and it is very spicy and strong, so it's great for evenings out. A very nice, inexpensive sexy frag!
A quick follow up to my review, if you like this scent get the matching body wash and pure silk lotion! The "pure silk" lotion is probably the best fragranced body product my wife or I have ever tried, it goes on smooth and almost instantly turns your skin silky soft! Go to the bay, find it pretty cheap, and if you like this scent, you will not regret it!
If you could put the glamour of the 90's into a bottle, this would be it. Or at least, it comes pretty close. This is hardly recognizable as a VS scent - it's that different from their current offerings. If you are looking for something fruity and pink, do not stop here. This is deep, warm, ambery, woody, floral, like velvet. Wearing this makes me want to break out the hot rollers and maroon lipstick of 1994. This is VS at its dark and vampy best.
I got this scent as part of a gift set. This scent literally made me want to puke! I wanted to scrub it off of me the minute I put it on. Unfortunatly it is strong and lasts a while. After awhile i was actually nauseated from the smell. This is one I tossed in the garbage. My husband hated it and thought it smelled like a little old lady.
To me, Rapture is a warm, spicy "cozy sweater" kind of fragrance.
I love this fragrance! I have been wearing it for 20 years (since I was 22, so I don't think it is just for old ladies.) It is warm, sexy and long-lasting. Better suited for night and colder weather(but I wear it whenever I'm feeling naughty.)
I smelled this in the store the other day and liked it very much! I agree that it is mature, but very warm and inviting. I think the perfume would be too strong for me, but I will certainly be getting the body splash!!
Update: I'm in love!!! I have worn this almost every day since I bought it! How could anyone hate this? It is so comforting and divine! I think it is classy too, when used in moderation. Beautiful!
Powdery, and reminds me of my aunt. I detected this scent from a customer at work from ten feet away. This is so nostalgic; I love it. My only complaints are that I like my perfumes to be more pungent, and the amber is not as pronounced as I prefer, but then again it is relatively inexpensive.
I first smelled it on my coworker back in early nineties, it was her signature scent. There is something to be said about 80s and 90s when perfume actually smelled like perfume and not fruity water. I tried it again the other day and its everything I remembered-slightly spicy warm floral oriental with a hint of sweetness. I would put it in the same category as Bijan(which is spicier) or Tresor(which is more floral). Rapture takes the place somewhere between the two. It has great lasting power and one small spray was enough to last me for several hours and I could distinctly smell it on my wrist. Normally I prefer sweeter gormand scents but I am drawn to this because its so heady, sensual and womanly. No, its not an "old lady" scent, its a scent for confident sexy woman. I really do miss VS fragrances that they used to produce back in the day-now, all they have for the most part is weak, fruity water that is getting weaker every year. Its truly sad because they used to have some wondeful long lasting fragrances
My mom used to wear this when I was younger, and I remember stealing it from her to wear it...so maybe I'm biased toward it, but I think it smells so warm and nice..."mature", of course, but people always tell me that I'm very mature for my age, so maybe I just have "mature" tastes. If you're all about a "sexy" or "hot" image, I wouldn't wear this, but if you're going for a more classic vibe, this is perfect.
One of the most enticing scents I've ever smelled!
i used to wear this but now it gives me a headache. there was always something magical about Rapture. whenever i wore it i pictured being in a smoky 1940's piano bar kinda like bogie and bacall era. sultry, smoldering and absolutely sexy in a vintage way. i wish i could wear this again!
Tested this beauty at the VS store today and goodness what a treasure! I've been dying to try it and so glad I finally did!Now on my want list!
I get a dose of powdery amber that can be a bit overwhelming if more than 2 small sprays are applied. A small time later, the florals come in and soften and round out the amber. It's an enchanting powdery scent that becomes more pleasant after the first hour.
I also tested the lotion and liked its subtle scent. Unfortunately, the EDP only lasted about 3 hours on my skin. Still, I'd love to own this beauty for cold winter evenings snuggled by the fire.
One of the classic V.S. scents. The perfumes in this store are as temporary as the sales associates. It seems like they discontinue as much as Bath and Body Works. Not surprising, since they're owned by the same company. Rapture does not smell the same on everyone, and I think too many women wear "clean" perfumes because they don't want to offend. Anything that isn't fruity floral, is old lady territory to them. V.S. is 99% fruity florals. They're marketing to the teens and early 20's, when they used to have an edge and market towards women. So I'm not surprised that Rapture isn't popular anymore. I have a very small bottle, but I'd wear this over most of their body sprays any day.
This past Christmas 2011, I went to VS to buy this for my mother (although we both love it) and for some reason it smelt different. I think they changed the formula. Anyone notice this? I have a tiny bit left in my old bottle and it definitely didn't smell like the stuff they were selling in the store...I was disappointed.
I LOVE Rapture!!!! So sexy.
This *Is* Your Mother's Victoria's Secret (or at least your older sister's)
Rapture is a super rich, warm fragrance. The animalic and amber accords stick out the most. It can become cloying if worn incorrectly, and I am not surprised to read the reviews by people who are surprised by how it smells. It's sophisticated and classic. I always picture burgundy velvet when I think of Rapture. It may have come in a burgundy, flocked box when I worked at VS in 1997-1998.
Victoria's Secret's image, today, is vastly different from what it was in the early 1990s. Back then, VS stores featured soft, new age and classical music in a sophisticated setting. It wasn't about black and white lacquer + hot pink. It was mauve, ivory, and maaaaaybeee light blue (if they were feeling naughty). VS was going for a wholly different clientele when Rapture debuted. There was no PINK sub-brand.
If you want a real treat, catch a whiff of the other two classic VS fragrances (both of which are out of production, as I understand): Encounter and Victoria. Back in the 90s, all three were in full force! Women donned their favorite navy blazers and headed to the mall for some fragrance and white eyelet lace chemises.
I like this a lot! I tried it on today not knowing what it was, and that was probably a blessing, because I am kind of prejudiced against Victoria's Secret fragrances. At first, I thought "Is this Estee Lauder Beautiful in a very weird bottle?" (It was the mini bottle and not labeled.) Like another reviewer said, rose is not mentioned as a note but I definitely get strong rose. Very long lasting and comforting floral. Great from start to finish.
There is no rose mentioned among the notes, but for me Rapture is a sweet smell of rose. Warm and soft, yet quite strong and prominent with good staying power. Very elegant and feminine, to be applied with light hand.
I like it and it reminds me very much of SpellBound.
Ok, even though I didn't like it, I'm able to appreciate Rapture's beauty. This one is different to everything VS offers, it is NOT their average fruity floral, I find that refreshing in a way...Its composition is complex, rich, bold, sophisticated and it also feels romantic and nostalgic at the same time..
It is not my cup of tea, but I think there are ladies out there that could pull this beauty off. I got no freesia, but a very ambery orange blossom and a strong jasmine note...
I did not like it for me, but I like the idea of it...I wish VS would have followed this pattern of creating interesting fragrances with depth. I like several VS creations, but lately most of their fragrances seem to be so mediocre...
I tried to give this one a whirl but it just doesn't mix with my chemistry - kind of smelled like insecticide. It does seem like a scent for a more mature woman. But it does last long so I really wished it would have worked for me. I do have to say that the bottle design is unique and attractive.
I remember when I used to own this perfume--it's very very potent! Kind of smells like an old lady...and I never really received any good compliments from it, just that it "stinks." I would not buy this one again.
I loveee it!!! Got this as a birthday present. First sniff...whew!! This cologne is strong, with considerable silage and great staying power (on my skin, it stays all day long). Amber is really prominent since opening (until the very end), followed by a huge bouquet of white floral. Thankfully the citrus give the heavy opening a bit lightness (a teeny tiny bit).
As heavy as this is, I wear it all year long. In the summer it always makes me feel a little bit naughty. In the winter, it feels warm and still a bit naughty.
Nope. This is not your everyday VS fragrance.
It is mature, loud, spicy, sweet, sexy, bold; unapologetic of its existence. This is (VS) angel with attitude.
Rapture is one of the few fragrances in my collection that I have a love hate relationship with. Some days Rapture smells "old lady", "dirty slut" or simply repulsive, on other days, I find the dry down really clean, almost close to the skin. Rapture is a full bodied white floral with a slightly metallic quality. Powerhouse sillage and amazing staying power,it is a COLOGNE that wears better and lasts longer than some EDPs. I have the entire fragrance set of Rapture (the box which comes with the lotion, shower cream, cologne and edp), but I am scared to layer this fragrance since the Cologne alone is STRONG. Rapture is probably Victoria's Secret's most unique fragrance--standing out from a sea of mediocre fruity and sweet fragrances they produce today.
I really don't like this scent. I don't think it smells pleasant at all... I took one whiff and my whole face wrinkled up, making one of the workers laugh.
I love this! Old Hollywood sexy!. When people say "it smells old", what they're saying is they're thinking "people of a more mature age". But I think the real interpritation of this scent is, it's not suppost to be of a mature age, but of a mature time. it's the interpritation of sexy from a retro era. Obviously VS didn;'t put others out there like this, perhaps becuase the perfume was just so misunderstood. It's not a perfume for an old lady, it's a perfume for someone who can capture the retro sexy vibe of the 50s and 60s.
Not sure if I like this one, I remember loving it as a teen...but I think I may have outgrown it.
I noticed that most people voted that this a cold weather fragrance. I disagree...rapture smells tropical. I think it's better suited for warmer weather.
I can understand how a lot of people don't like this, it is indeed a "mature" fragrance. However, I wouldn't say that makes it inappropriate for someone in their teens, twenties, or thirties.
My mother, who was in her twenties as I grew up, always wore this and it always comforted me. Once I was sixteen I got my first bottle, and it smells fantastic on me. Everyone always complimented me when I wore it. You just have to know when to wear it. It's not for a gal-pal night or a day relaxing by the pool, but it is perfect for sensual, gown-wearing nights, or turning heads at cocktail parties.
I was a little worried at first, that this would be too strong for me or too "old", but it's actually not that bad, I quite like it. Best for fall / winter nights, spicy and warm. I really like the bottle, one thing I dislike about it is that it doesnt last long enough (for a night perfume).
This started off too strong with a weird almost chemical note (sorry, I'm no good at discerning notes) that made me think maybe I was crazy for thinking I liked this at the store. But after a few minutes, I remembered why I liked it. It has a dark and sexy scent, like nothing else I have ever worn. I will probably get a lot of use out of it this winter.
Fragrance type: vanilla oriental
Top notes: citrus, orange blossom
Middles notes: freesia, jasmine, Bulgarian rose
Low notes: amber, musk, vanilla, heliotrope
This is my favorite perfume ever!!! My husband likes it too and that's saying a lot. he's picky.I get complimented on my scent whenever I wear this . I use it all the time and have run out again ! Pouty face. Thank goodness my birthday is coming up next week. Wishing for it for christmas too.
I love the smell of this perfume on my wife.It is awsome, has a very feminine and elegant scent to it.Smells like something a movie star would wear.I really enjoy this fragrance on my wife.
I wanted to like this so badly but I just couldn't. Rapture is way too strong and gave me a headache after just one sniff. Nothing but roses and musk! Girls, this IS your grandma's rose perfume. Reminds me of those overdressed, bedazzled old southern ladies that you hear and smell coming a mile away. Just not pleasant and not sexy, IMO.
well i love this one but it smell like red door but elizabeth arden.... but i dont like red door... rapture is soooo sweet and when you wear it every ones knows you are coming... i think it goes well with a red dress, for cold days :P
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!!!! SEXY!!!!!!!
Love it! Heart shaped bottle is gorgeous!
The scent is oriental, romantic, suitable for evening !
If you like Opium, Chanel 5 etc. the timeless scents so you will like this one too.
I like it!
a very unusual amber scent. i can detect some medical hints which one i love, it's from the freesia i guess.
this has a nice creamy powdery wearing sensation. it's indeed a very sexy, tempting scent. warm amber and cool fresia... mysterious thing!
no sweets in this than the lovely orangeblossom. a great mixture. very classy and mordern at the same time. lasts forever. nice sillage. great bottle. thumbs up!
Heavy amber and spice. This lasts forever on me, which is good because I love it!
I love this one! It's not too flowery or girlie. Kind of mysterious.
Love, love, LOVE this one! Spicy and exotic scent..., can't go wrong with that!
Heavy oriental musk on me. Not bad, but not my character.
I love it !!! it's very warm and sweet but at the same time it's very sexy and exotic . Such a wonderful scent, its nice when you are going out at night, its not to be used at day time or work because it's a bit strong. Love it !!!!
i work at VS and we get a beauty book with all the notes for every single VS fragrance and the notes are really: Amber, Bulgarian Rose, Musk and Heliotrope.
I have been wearing this intoxicating scent for about 7 years and I tell u nothing but sexy describes this. TO those of u that dont like this to each is their own but this has character to it and not to mention hubby likes it on me
I really like this one, its warm and cosy. I dont think that it is only for mature women,im only 24 and it smells sweet and warm on me. Im suprise that this one is spicy, because i cant smell the spices at all, but i just like it =)
I tried this one back when it first came out. It's not bad but I think maybe a bit too much amber in it. It sort of dragged it down and it seemed like some old discontinued drugstore fragrance. VS scents have been lighter lately and I think the heavy amber is something you would see with an older fragrance.
I am sitting on the fence with this one. I do love an oriental but I am not getting much from this. I always give a perfume 3 tries before I make a final decision. 1 down. 2 to go.
This is a very rich perfume that is not for the faint of heart. The orange blossom and amber stand out to me. I actually LOVE to smell it on others, but when I wear it myself it gets to me after awhile and I have to wash it off :( I have a bottle that I just can't get rid of even though I have a problem wearing it...can someone please explain to me why>???
Rapture is the most mature scent I've smelled from Victoria's Secret. There is none of the fruit cocktail notes that are in almost all of their other fragrances.
That being said, I can't really smell any notes in specific. They all work to together to create a composition that's a bit serious and not at all flirtatious, in my opinion. Unfortunately I don't get the spicyness that others have mentioned.
this is a great spicy sweet sexy scent.i got it as a gist and havent used it till now.The most fume victoria makes.this can hold its own with any fume.
This ia a sweet,thick,spicy fume.Everyone I know calls it SEX IN A BOTTLE!!!Very provacative.
I really like this one but I probably won't ever wear it until I am older : ) Definitely more mature smelling!
This is still my fave of the VS scents. It is strong and sweet, good for winter & evenings out. I like that it is a more "mature" smell, as the VS fragrances are mostly sweet and not terribly sophisticated to my nose. This has a little class. I get amber and vanilla (not listed) the strongest; the flowers are blended in well, and the amber tempers them so that you get a smell that is warm (not "spicy" in a cinnamon way), powdery and sweet all at once. Once of my all-time fave perfumes.
Very floral & amber powdery beginning, not your bright clean floral notes. The amber dry down makes it smell like a gourmand and is so soft I kept forgetting I had it on except for the occasional waft. I would say the opening is definitely a more mature style fragrance, especially when compared to the VS Very Sexy or Pink lines. The beginning is clearly feminine but the dry down is unisex. Nice but not surprising or different.
There must something in this that doesn't agree with my nose. I notice a lot of the stronger perfumes will have this certain scent, the way you can usually pick out a scent that has gardenia. I wore it once, got compliments, and threw it away. Others seem to love it, I can only imagine Aunt Bea from the old Andy Griffith shows when I spray this. I love some other amber scents....it can't be that.
I love, love love this fragrance, it has a mixture of exotic florals, amber, and wood. It makes me feel every exotic; what am I saying I am exotic. It makes me feel as if I am home in Jamaica.
I love Rapture! When I've smelled it on others it was actually soft and clean-smelling. In my opinion ... you can't beat that.
I first smelled Rapture as a teen. My mom recieved it as a Mother's Day gift. I wasn't really into mature scents then, but this one struck a sweet cord with my senses. Years later, while shopping in VS I came across this fragrance again, and decided then and there, I had to have it. The sweetness of the amber and jasmine are so deliciously intoxicating. I'm fresh out of it, but I will be purchasing more in the future.
I have been searching for the perfect romantic, evening perfume and this is it! My husband absolutely loves it. It is definitely not for the office, it is spicy, warm, really sexy but I'm older now and probably never would have picked this when I was younger. It is really in harmony with the perfect evening scent I love on him which is the original Escada for men.
Very amber-y and powderish in a way. It is a strong fragrance, and kind of screams "I am sexy, come to me!!" I like ambery, spicy fragrances sometimes, but only when they linger closer to the skin. My old roommate wore it when she was in her early 20's, and I always thought it a bit heavy. I could smell it on her when I was several feet away. I also thought it seemed more appropriate for an older woman.
Reminds me a lot of red door
Rapture is quite strong and may suite better at evening than work but I find myself not being able to let it be. It´s absolutely wonderful and not at all like the perfumes I usually like.
Also, since she doesn't speak to me anymore I am going to the mall to buy me a bottle of my beloved VS favorite! It's on sissy!
I dated a man who went ga-ga for this, but I just can't wear it. Much too loud and floral for my taste.
This isn't for everyone, but I like it a lot. I'm extremely drawn to how sophisticated this fragrance is. The rose and jasmine notes smell beautiful! The only downside is that it is too strong to be an everyday fragrance. I find myself wearing it a lot during the colder months though. It's spicy and exotic.
too much for me
This isn't bad.. it is a little mature for me but for a VS fragrance it was a nice offering.
