Launching exclusively at Barneys New York flagship stores in October 2007, Kismet is the latest masterpiece in the fragrance portfolio of Yosh Han, a widely recognized custom perfumer and owner of her San Francisco-based aroma atelier, YOSH Olfactory Sense.
The fragrance concept – founded in the Arabic term for twists of fate and turns of chance - is realized in Kismet; a lush and glorious floral, opulent with narcissus, Roman chamomile, osmanthus and boronia; seductive in its undertones of cedar and frankincense, with hints of hay and dill, tumeric and ylang ylang to give it a sense of mischief. Kismet: a perfume redolent of ancient mysteries, hidden gardens. Of destiny…and knowing.
The theme continues throughout. Like some rare and timeless fabric, the outer package seems woven with threads of emerald and midnight blue, filigree’d with gold; a tapestry’d sky winged with 17 blackbirds; an odd number. Will the lone flyer find, at last, its soul mate? With Kismet, perhaps chance and destiny are on the same course.
Yosh Han began her career as an apprentice to a perfumer in Aspen, Colorado where she learned to identify and combine essential oils and perfume essences. Today, inspired by all things that evoke emotion and memories, she combines the art of perfumery with the science of aromachology. In creating her signature perfumes – fragrances that stir the senses, fascinate the mind and enchant the soul, Yosh calls upon her deep and abiding connection to flowers and herbs instilled, she says, by her mother, a trained master of ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging and a disciple of the healing herbal therapies used in Oriental medicine.
Would it be Kismet…that the Chinese character for Yosh means “fragrant”?
Kismet starts like ginger and camomile hot tea with sugar, it reminds me a lot of aromatherapy essential oil box, in which the air has many essence blend together and you cannot really smell a single note, but a lush smell of all those, in a nice, natural and earthy way.
Then it smells like Ylang Ylang and cedar wood and some other woods scented room, it is soothing and sensual. Then the ginger and camomile hot tea scent comes back and dance around every now and then. This reminds me of some kind of ginger spicy candy I had when I was young.
Later on the cedar wood is really dominant, sweet, light woodsy. It smells so unusual because I normally smell cedar wood in an oil burner, not in perfume; anyways, this is a good and nice unusual in perfume. However, at some point, I feel that strangely the cedar wood smell reminds me of raw mushrooms, but it’s still nice and dries down to really close-to-skin sweet woods.
Kismet is interesting as a perfume, however, since I use different types of essential oil to scent my home sometimes, it always reminds me of woody essential oil which I do not normally put on my skin.
A beautiful sweet floral perfume oil, that throws me back to my childhood. For what ever reason, this always reminds me sharing my Pez candy with my sister. In one sitting, we would end up eating all the Pez candy and beg our parents to buy us more.
There are no sweet candy notes in this perfume oil. It could come from the combination of Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Narcissus & chamomile that gives it the (floral) sweetness.
The sample of the perfume oil has lasted me quite some time, allowing me to be able to test this sensual & mysterious scent several times.
