Iris Noir is a third fragrance in the Secrets d' Essences collection (the first one was Voile d' Ambre from 2005 and Rose Absolue form 2006), which was made in 2007. The perfume is floriental with chypre accords. The composition opens with notes of bergamot, coriander and carrot seed. In the heart of the perfume there is iris, while the base is made of Tonka bean, patchouli and styrax. The perfume was designed by Olivier Pescheux and Nathalie Gracia-Cetto. Olivier Pescheux also created the first perfume from the Voile d' Ambre series. The perfume is available in the concentration of Eau de Toilette (50 ml and 15 ml for the purse) and Eau de Perfume (30 ml), together with the body care line.

Base Notes
A lovely, classy "gentle" iris, not overtly iris-y in that dark brooding way. This is lightened up a lot by the coriander and the carrot seed. I don't get any patchouli in this!
Very good value, as Yves Rocher products usually are. I would feel comfortable wearing this day or night, maybe not for the office but for a day-time outing. Good sillage and reasonable longevity (3 hours, which is good going for me!)
I have quite a few iris perfumes, love the note - this is one which will stay in my wardrobe.
I also find this is a very gothic fragrance, full of that mysterious dark feel I miss so much in Jesús del Pozo’s Halloween. It smells decadent in a strangely alluring way.
What I detect the most in Iris Noir is a powdery-metallic violet note. It surprises me that violet is not listed among its notes, as I notice it much more than the smell of iris, present as one of the heart notes according to the YR site.
Iris Noir can be as light, vibrant and icy cold as it is a warm, slightly spicy floriental. So depending on which of these qualities you prefer to highlight, you can wear it in summer or in colder weather. But it definitely smells classy whenever you wear it, that’s for sure.
After several tries I gave up.
I'm the kind of person that hates anything with Tonka beans and patchouli, I can't stand both of them and I would probably never will.
For me, Iris Noir is quite deep, dark, mysterious and bitter; I found the opening very medicinal and a bit spicy. The right word to describe Iris Noir should be "gloomy"; It's like watching/ reading dark comedy like "a series of unfortunate events" or to watch a film like "a nightmare before Christmas" or "Sleepy Hollow"
It's definitely not for everyday wear since I find it too strong and overpowering. Iris Noir may be considered by others to be elegant and classy but I guess everyone has different taste, Iris Noir is the opposite from "my kind" of elegance.
very Long lasting about 10 hours with great sillage...but it's not wearable for me, I don't want to wear anything that smells bitter and uneasy on the nose.
What can I say about Iris Noir... Patchouli mixed with an odeur of stale urine? I don`t know what note it is that creates the urine feel, but it`s horrific.
A nice powdery violet is trying to break through, but it doesn`t stand a chance.
Great sillage and longevity, but I`ll pass.
Generally don't enjoy floral scents (cause most of the time, they smell nothing like the real flower) but this one is irresistible. Deeply sensual and just perfect for winter.
I got this parfume 3 years ago, I didn't like it at all. I can't say this fragrance for old woman and also I can't say it's for girls, seems like it doesn't fit anyone. I lost this parfume one day and I can say I am not sorry for that at all, it's good that it was like a present from Yves Rocher and I didn't spend any money. If I wouldn't lose it, Iris would stay non-touched for ages.
I also got this as a freebie from Yves Rocher when I ordered more of their Voile de Ambre perfume that I love (cant find that one on here btw). Didn't love it at first but it grew on me a bit. Still wouldn't say it's a favorite scent but it's not bad for the days I want to change up my perfume and have something light and lingering. I would say this is more of an "evening", date-night/night out type scent though
Iris Noir is an elegant bitter-sweet floral scent. There is a transparent and fresh tone to it that makes this one wearable for day-time IMO; however, the powdery bitter-sweet quality gives the scent a deep and mysterious vibe and makes it a great scent for the evenings. I have never smelled real iris before, so I don't know if this smells like the real deal, but I'll say that I like this scent. I imagine this is to be a great night-time scent for a classy but minimalist, shy woman. I don't find it special however, and sSo far, my favorites from YR's Secrets D'Essences range remain to be Tendre Jasmin and Rose Absolu.
I love Iris Noir. It's a fragrance that smells a lot like "Daddy-O shampoo" from Lush. It's so great to have a perfume that smells like this! But Daddy-O is a shampoo based on violets, so that's what I smell in Iris noir. It's nice, deep and sweet. There's something fresh in it too. It's not overwhelming. Lasting power is good.
Edit: It is a mixture of "Daddy-O" and "Tramp" from Lush. Very, very nice. I love it!
Iris Noir opens beautifully with a luminous soft, peppery, violet aura--a little metallic and bitter courtesy of coriander, which I think adds some really wonderful interest to an already intriguing floral note in the world of perfume.
As Iris Noir develops, a translucent sweetness rises to the surface, like a slightly tart blackberry scent as lafefe notes below. I dare say that I also detect a nuance of rose.
Tonka is fairly subtle and adds a little hay-like earthiness, complimenting the perfectly pitched patchouli which gives the base a little woody texture. Styrax (benzoin) adds to the warm, but glassy sweetness in the base with its vanilla-like character.
Overall, a unique, crytalline presentation of enigmatic iris. I think the transparency of this perfume makes it suitable in all weather, although for the warmer months, perhaps just in the evening; in the crisp, winter months, I think it will truly shimmer with brilliance.
Perfect for winter but badly for summer.
I can feel Warm Dark,Sweet,Expensive,Feminine
Contemporary scent and Very Long Lasting (more than 10 hr. on my skin)
7.5/10
I got this as a free gift by YR. First I thought it's a nice nightime scent and could be interesting. But with the drydown there was a harsh note on me that was almost masculine that I gave it away.
May I just say...I chose this scent for today and it never fails to make me feel sexy and confident! One of my favorites for life! Just a stunning, balanced fragrance with great longevity and sillage. Perfect for day or night!
BOLD SWEET AND CONTEMPORAY
***************************
Iris Noir is a sweet smelling perfume whcih delivers WOW factor from the first initial smell, I (personally) smell rose and Amber in this but it's not listed so maybe its just my nose.
If you wear this perfume you will get noticed, its not subtle by any means! x
I tested it yesterday without knowing the right composition, it's been a funny exercise but...
What I smelt was:
Top notes: pepper and citrus
Heart: rose, blackberry
Base note: iris and tonka.
Now that I see the list I understand how my nose was distant from the real olfactory pyramid but I'm pretty sure there are blackberries and roses in Iris Noir. To me it's fresh and fruity, spiced in the opening and very light. It's a luminous iris, although the name suggests "noir". It disappears completely after a few hours, it's the perfect fragrance for a day out in springtime, it makes me feel like walking across a meadow watching the first trees to come into blossom.
I really like this, it's so sexy and mysterious.
First may I just say that I love Yves Rocher products!
I bought the Yves Rocher Iris Noir and Voile d'Amber in the travel size mini bottle to try them and love them both!
Iris Noir is earthy and dries down to a smoky, warm scent that lingers nicely. I plan to buy a large spray bottle of this soon. It is a very French fragrance.
Iris Noir is very dark scent, it even has gothic darkness to it. It's more of a night-time scent because it's dark and seductive spicy sweetness.
I understand all the praise here, it's a really beautiful perfume but just not my cup of tea.
It is a soft fragrance. Soft and powdery. Quiet and hauntingly dreamy: Ok, now I'm visiting a gothic castle, I close my eyes, a shadow passes...
I am genuinely surprised at how good Yves Rocher IRIS NOIR is. This complex, modern chypre floral lies somewhere on the iris perfume line between Hermes HIRIS and Prada INFUSION D'IRIS, being less feminine than the latter and more feminine than the former.
The carroty earthiness I love in HIRIS is present here, too, but toned down quite a bit. At the same time, there is enough iris to make this seem a floral cousin to the Prada offering, albeit a much less powdery and considerably darker one. Perhaps what is really the secret to this composition's success is the ambrette alluded to by Marianne. Whatever the case, this mélange is a delight to my nose!
IRIS NOIR has great longevity and smells better and better as it develops and warms up on the skin. I like this perfume very much and am definitely going to look into acquiring a full bottle.
On a final, mundane note, I'd like to point out to the smart shoppers out there that the regular price per milliliter of this creation is actually higher than either HIRIS or INFUSION D'IRIS. But YR has ridiculous sales and offers going on all of the time, so I'll take advantage of one of those...
I think that this perfume is not an oriental floral. For my it is a floral Chypre without big innovations but good solved for the lovers of this type of perfumes .
It is not too intense at least in my skin, but certainly it is not for my. It was waiting for the oriental one probably with iris!!! And slightly darker.
I find the chypre components in this a little too sharp for my chemistry. The carrot seeds and coriander are doing me in! On the right person, this would be gorgeous!
Thanks to my friend Gypsy Perfumemista I acquired this wonderful scent, thanks John! Medicine type of smell. I love it!!! I don't know what gives it the medicine cabinet scent but this has it. Its what Hallie Berry's Scent has and so does Encore by Alfred Sung. The dry down is dark and seductive. Its along the lines of some of DKNY scents, dark and very sexy like. Nice scent!!!
Our lovely Chat is loving this one very much!! From the Secret Essences range it is my least favorite, but if I do not compare it to it's sisters, I must admit it is quite classy!
Action
I find this to be a very classy, beautiful perfume. More "mature," (or old fashioned, I suppose) the younger set might have trouble appreciating it. Goes on just slightly bitter, but quickly becomes a balanced, powdery iris - gorgeous, really. Just slight sharp woody & green. After about 30 minutes, the patchouli comes out firmly, but (to me) does not completely overpower the florals, although it isn't subtle. I guess that's where the "Noir" comes in, it's really on the lighter (not much punch), dry side. Okay for day, but "dressy" enough for a summer night out. Lasts pretty well on me, about half the day without needing a freshener. By the end of wear, gets sweeter & MUCH more powdery, but I still smell iris. You can get a full bottle of this as cheap as $30 during the many Yves Rocher promotions, and it is WELL worth the price!
It's a very unique, very distinct scent.
The opening notes are surprisingly tangy and violet clearly stands out. It's a freshly cut violet very beautiful, very wild.
And then, of course the iris, which rounds this flowery heart.
There's no sweetness at all, the base is clearly woody so it has deepness but it manages to retain an "airy" feeling.
Powdery? I don't think so, that's why I can see no similarity with Kenzo Flower.
However, I agree with Malegria when she says that it's similar to Chopard's Wish; if you could remove from Wish the plum, the vanilla, the caramel and all the gourmand fireworks what you would have left is the clean light of Iris noir.
It's an eau de parfum so the lasting power is very good, both on clothes and on my skin in my case.
If you like layering, the diferent scents in the Secrets d'Essences collection mix very well together and you can successfully play with the body lotions and the perfumes of this range.
I've finished my first bottle and I've worn it mainly at work, as long as you don't spray too much it'll be fine.
i wasn't particularly impressed by this one: tonka bean and patchouli were the good parts here, i also get some ambery notes, expressing its "noir" bit... but alongside there is this chemical sugary note which ruins everything. I don't know whether it's my chemistry, but this fragrance becomes unpleasantly sweet on me, which totally overshadows all the good parts. I don't find it fresh, more fruity floral, somewhat tart and artificial. Sorry, doesn't work for me at all.
Update: at the dry-down the sweetness went away which is good. but along with it the "darkness" also somewhat vanished and the scent became ordinary.
My first impression the Bergamot is good
the Frankincense is a another goodie
i don't detect the Carrot seeds
the patchouli very light this smells
similar to Kenzo Flower but less powderly. a sweet tangy scent very sultry.
The first time almost a year ago, when I tested this one on my wrist I just detested it. But after reading reviews here I decided to give it another try...so I ordered a miniature of Iris Noir...I gave it some time, when the scent developed on my skin, after the drydown I kind of liked it, so I am now sampling this for the third day and I must say that I really like it. It reminds me of a vintage fragrance. I find it a quite mature scent, its dark but velvety more for cold days. But still in this range I like Voile Ambre, Tendre Jasmin and Rose Absolue the most. It indeed reminded me a bit of Ck Euphoria.
The patchouli and tonka bean combination is very nice...I realised that I like most scents which have tonka bean in the base.
This smell is worth a try, just give it some time...it smell definately expensive!
Thanks to Fragrantica and its members I learned to judge fragrances in a better way. A big Thank You!!!
this is a surprise by Yves Rocher.I never thought I would like it,but the truth is,it matches my chemistry very well and I can't recognize any of the notes which are listed here.(that's why I like it)
it starts with fresh, but dark and mysterious notes.it should have something to do with Calvin Klein perfumes.because to me it's like a mixture of Euphoria and Obsession Night.but it's even better than them!
today I applied a little of my tester on my wrist and when I left my room,my sister immediately asked me for the name of perfume.surprising point is that she's a fan of all of CK perfumes.
I can't describe it via the notes and I suggest you to forget it completely.to me it's dark, sour and powdery with a hint of fruits.
the reason I was curious to sniff this perfume was that I have orris Noir by Ormande Jayne and I wanted to see if they smell similar(because of similarity in names).but I have to say they have nothing in common.Orris noir is much more spicier, while this one is fruity-powdery.I should confess that it matches my chemistry better.
I have tried this fragrance several times but it is not working for me. It starts out very nice, dry and woody, not sweet at all, just earth and irises. After a half an hour it just seems to disappear. I can't smell anything at all. No lasting power, at least on me.
Absolutely the best frangrance I've ever encountered! Brings the frangrance of the interwar or the Belle Epoque periods. It's unbelievable how you can get in touch with how the people of those days felt and thought just by enjoying this perfume. A great achievement for Yves Rocher!
If you like spicy perfumes you must try this!
I love this scent so much. It's dark and sweet on me.So so feminine!
I first tried this one on paper and I couldn't stop sniffing, it was so classy, distinctive, not sweet, but warm and a bit harsh, very iris-y. A few days later I got a wet napkin scented with Iris Noir. Ohhh, i had to wash it right away because, on my skin, it turned from a fresh and pleasant scent into something suffocating that gave me stomach aches. So I guess this one depends a lot on the skin type. You should give it a try.
This is my second review of this scent. I gave Iris Noir another chance after a few months had passed, and I'm pleased to report it's much better this time. It's categorized as an oriental spicy on here. Perhaps. It seems like more of a floral woody fragrance to me. Iris dominates, but the woody base notes linger and are much more pleasant this time around. I detect a slightly sweet, almond "play-doh" kind of note several hours into the dry-down. Something in Iris Noir reminds me of the pleasant woody floral musk of Avon Abynsthe.
I'm not sure why this one was so sour and stinky on me the first time around, but Iris Noir is a gentle reminder to me that all fragrances deserve a second or third chance before they're written off entirely. I would give it three stars this time around (on a scale of one to five stars). Not especially unique or wonderful, but pleasant enough for daily wearing.
I wore it to bed yesterday...It is quite something! Can`t say it`s a very original one or it will stay with us through generations, but definitely a nice one.The fresh opening of coriander greens and bergamot (carrot seed gives it a little seriousness) gradually changes...I like this part - it lingers before it turns into patchouli and tonka bean veil, with a powdery finish. The heart, the iris is the iris of art nuveau - exotic, spicy, Tiffany-glass iris!Fully developed, it made me think of Wish - of course,it is not that sweet, but you can easily trace their similarities.
I just love this scent - it is dark yet smooth, intense without being overpowering. It lasts a good long time on my skin - at least 5 or 6 hours - and despite the fact that generally I detest the smell of coriander, it blends in perfectly with the rest of the scent.
I really liked this one at first. It was a fruity-powdery-floral that was quite pleasant for the first hour or so. As it dried down, it took on an unusual sour/bitter note, like stale flowers rotting in the vase. :-( Might have been the coriander, although that's not usually a scent I have a problem with. At any rate, I recommend sampling this one prior to purchase.
I rarely criticize perfume but this one I detest. It's not long-lasting at all (I understand it depends on chemistry but how to explain the fact that the perfume disappeared completely in half an hour?) and it has an icky bitter note at the beginning. Then in ten minutes it turns into something powdery and then totally disappears. I never had headaches before but thanks to this scent I consumed half a bottle of pain reliever. It's a waste of money, IMHO.
Elegant and classy, stays long on my skin, more than a 5 hours till now, I think, and it's still intensive. Transparent and fresh on the same beginning with darker and intoxicating powdery iris in the heart of fragrance. Background balsamic and woody notes make perfect balance with iris chords. I hope it would be best in winter, on very cold weather. Feminine, deep, beautiful!
This fragrance is very realistic woody powdery iris, which is black indeed. Elegant, classy scent.
Marianne, thanks for the reply and your descriptions really helped.
This is quite similar to the first two, but there is a bit of a sweet, fresh note as well. (ambrette grains I should think) . Also, it is darker than rose absolue and less ambery than voile d'ambre. Hope I could help you.
This isn't available in the U.S.A. yet. Has anyone in France, England and Spain tried it? What does it smell like? I like Voile d'Ambre and Rose Absolue is for rose lovers. Thanks.
