Opium Oriental Limited Edition Fragrance Reviews

This was (and is) not a flanker, but simply Opium Eau de Toilette released in a limited edition bottle for 2005. It was a good time still for Opium, right before L'Oreal got a hold of it and took it down for good. If you like vintage versions of Opium and find this at a reasonable price, it's a good one, and you be assured that it's not the weak, watered down stuff they sell now.

Originally wanted to get the Chinese Legend (Dragon) edition, but at $150 (for 50 ml) I can just get a nice niche one instead, so I settled for this BEEEAUTIFUL bottle at half the price.
At first I compared it with the "impression" of the current EdP (which is something people shouldn't do because memory plays tricks), but concluded that it should be compared to the EdT instead...and now I have!
Right away I noticed the current EdT feels airier (probably not the right word) yet sweeter with a cinnamony vibe, while this one is creamier (osmanthus?) with a bitter undertone (oakmoss?).
I would say the similarity is still 90-95% though, whereas the EdP is only 85% similar for being warmer, smoother, more resinous, and even sweeter...feel like I should've bought that one instead (it's cheaper too), but I guess the gorgeously discontinued flanker bottle makes it worth it
*by the way, there's a surprise when you open the cap, which is a shiny gold sprayer top! Perfect for the black contrast!!

I wandered back to the last great days of YSL to experience another Opium flanker. This gorgeous bottle is worth the price alone-a white lotus on black lacquer.

First spray is identical to the original. I am familiar with the classic EDT and EDP. They take hours to unlock each nuance. Is this really a flanker?

After about 20 minutes, the changes appear, ever so quietly. I get some carnation this time. The carnation can get a little overbearing and yes bitter. Just the gentle osmanthus which is sort of peachy. Then the apricot blossom accompanies the lily of the valley and jasmine to its heart almost making this Opium a floriental, like the beautiful Fleur Imperial. Then the familiar spices and incense appear and decide otherwise. The above tree is lacking about 50 notes. Oh, my box mentions oakmoss!!!

The creamy amber vanilla base retains the pure character of Opium for the purist. Its as if this version is from a parallel universe. This Opium is still larger than life, yet she is a little gentler and I have to say better. 2 sprays will fill a room easily. Its more cool weather friendly, yet summer nights can get the same attention.

Opium was truly beyond description as far as the complexity and beauty. I am very privileged to have this rare collectible!

I agree to the temporalgrace below. This is not a fresher version of Opium, but just a little different. Powerful enough to make you think that you'll never wear it on Springtime, and as much tenacious as you expect from an Opium version. It lasts all day! Indeed, It opens with fresh notes of osmanthus and jasmine but after 2 minutes the familiar Opium scent takes over and embraces you in its oriental hug. Although the notorious beloved narcotic and sweet feeling of the original is somewhat missing, you're still on the same path walking side by side with balsamic and spicy notes. The Opium's base notes seem to be almost all of them here. I think that incense and woody notes are more strong in this version, maybe there's tobacco also? that's why seems less sweet but more dry and smoky at its heart notes. Overall, a great fragrance and a very nice unisex interpratation of the classic formula. The bottle is beautiful for decorating purposes also.

To me, this doesn't match the notes pyramid at all. It's very similar to the original, but the florals give it a soapy feel on the skin. It's very lovely, spicy and sweet with a hint of freshness, but it isn't at all how I imagined it! The bottle is absolutely beautiful. This scent is a bit too mature for my current tastes, but it's certainly worth testing if you're an oriental lover, and is sure to get you noticed!

Beautiful and blossomy on a paper strip. You get pure lily of the valley and jasmine with hardly any spice. On skin, everything blends together into a creamy, musky bomb. Gotta go easy with this one.

the fragrance!!! you never forget it!!!!!! bottle vonderful!!!!!!

The bottle is absolutely lovely, and the fragrance still was made with oakmoss. This year of Opium was very good~
