Bob Mackie is famous for his fashion, home furnishings and entertainment career. His design includes sportswear collection, signature fragrance, collectible Barbie® dolls, luggage, home furnishings and framed fashion and costume illustrations.

The designer grew up in Southern California and became very interested in Hollywood glamour. He started building his career as assistant to many of the industry’s top designers, and later as independent designer creating for such stars as Fred Astaire, Mitzi Gaynor, Dinah Shore and Diana Ross and the Supremes.

In 1967 Mackie started designing costumes for “Carol Burnett Show” and this collaboration has continued till today. He was noticed by many artists, including Cher, who asked Mackie to create her costumes for “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”. He also created numerous amazing costumes for her performances and tours.

Mackie has achieved impressive television career, and has received 31 Emmy Award nominations and nine Emmy Awards so far. The crowning achievement is his 2002 induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame – being the only costume designer in the Hall of Fame. He achieved a lot of success in film, and even received Oscar nominations for costume design in “Lady Sings the Blues” (Diana Ross), “Funny Lady” (Barbra Streisand) and “Pennies from Heaven” (Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters).

In 1982 he entered the world of ready-to-wear collections with his first collection of that type, which was very well accepted. He expanded his range of products to signature fragrance named “Mackie”, the introduction of the collectible Mackie Barbie® doll program and the launch of the “Wearable Art” program for the QVC television network.

In 1998 he started with home furnishings – he gave his clients a sense of style, luxury, and elegance in their own home. The debut collection of “Bob Mackie Home” furniture with brought him a great success.

In recent years, Mackie’s extraordinary fashion and costume design career achievements have been acknowledged. In May 2011, Mackie received the Design Legend Award from the Otis College of Art and Design, as well as an honorary doctorate degree from the school. Another significant award is tdf/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for his theatrical costume career, which was awarded to him in 2008.

In 1999 the Bob Mackie Retrospective was set up at The Museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology (“FIT”) to present Mackie’s contributions to fashion and costume design. The exhibition included more than 125 of Mackie’s spectacular creations, as well as sketches, photographs, videos and ephemera chronicling his extraordinary career. Visitors were also available to see a complete display of Mackie’s collectible Barbie® doll series. A book about his design - Unmistakably Mackie, was written by journalist Frank De Caro.
