Charles Jourdan Charles Jourdan (1883 –1976) was a French fashion designer famous for his designs of women's shoes. He started designing back in 1919 till his death, when he was succeeded by his sons.

After being trained as a shoemaker, Jourdan opened a shoe shop in Romans in the Drôme region of France. His business flourished and his shoes became so popular among women that he moved the company into a factory on Boulevard Voltaire in 1921 and employed over 30 people.

Jourdan recognized importance of advertisements and started advertising the company in women’s magazine, when helped to be identified as a haute couture house. It was in 1947 that his three sons joined the company, and the hosue grew outside of borders of France, in the United Kingdom.

The first boutique in Paris was opened in 1957. The company soon acquired a license to design and manufacture shoes under such brands and labels as Christian Dior and Pierre Cardin.

One of the main characteristics of the house is the focus on as setting trends and innovations in fashion industry – particularly with new materials in shoe creations. Jourdan built avant-garde image of the brand by means of imagery from the surrealist photographer Guy Bourdin. In the 1970es the company added various other products to their offer, such as clothing and handbags.

After Jourdan’s death in 1976, the company continued lining up success under the leadership of his sons. Jourdan boutiques were open in major cities across Europe and in North America. Even Imelda Marcos wore their shoes, the Jourdan stilettos. In 2002 the company filed for bankruptcy due to vast debts and the Jourdan family sold its stake to a Luxembourg investment fund, Lux Diversity.
