Christian Dior

"It's hard to imagine how many forces you need to create a new fragrance, bottle and even a package. This is so amazing that I feel myself the perfumer as well as couturier" — Christian Dior.

The International Museum of Perfumery in Grasse often organizes different temporary exhibitions. They are usually held two times a year: general exhibitions in summer, more intimate exhibitions in winter. After 2016's "From the Belle Epoque to the Roaring Twenties", the Museum continues its chronological inspection of the XXth century by paying attention to the post-WWII years and the iconic couturier Christian Dior who created fragrances starting from 1947. This exhibition, organized with the help of Christian Dior Parfums, highlights the brightest moments in Christian Dior's life and the legendary fragrances of the famous Fashion House.

Inspired by the Belle Epoque and the beauty of flowers, Christian Dior recreated the image of French elegance and femininity. Flowers stay the semantic core of the maestro's art — look at his dresses and other clothes with the names Muguet ("Lily of the valley"), Corolle ("Corolla") or Rose ("Rose"); bright soliflores (Diorissimo) and flower bouquets (Miss Dior). In the 1920s, Christian Dior was tightly connected to the world of art, journalism  and economics that hugely helped him in his personal development and the success of the Fashion House.

From the mid-1930s Christian Dior's attention was drawn to the South of France — to Grasse, where he planned to extend his knowledge in perfumery;  this interest appeared largely thanks to Christian Dior's meeting with Edmond Roudnitska. During WWII Christian Dior lived with his family in Var, where he later often came back to visit his sister, and in 1951 he bought La Colle Noire castle, located in Montauroux.

The exhibition "Christian Dior – Esprit de parfums" is organized just one year after the reconstruction of La Colle Noire, the place where Christian Dior spent his last years. This exhibition reflects the influence of the south of France, rich with perfume traditions, on the legendary couturier. At the exhibition that will be held from May, 16 to October, 1 2017 you will find not only a large collection of fragrances and vintage ads, but the treasures of the historic collections from Dior.

The Museum's own objects will be shown alongside the objects from other state and private collections. Multimedia installations will allow visitors to take in information using all five senses.
