Rose Pattern

Summary: Belle is a new fragrance from Worth that celebrates Disney's book-loving heroine. This limited edition Eau de Parfum is sure to please anyone who ever watched Beauty and the Beast and imagined a perfume based on the famed rose from the films. The perfume is housed in the classic Worth bottle and a luxurious book-shaped keepsake box.

Perfumer: Honorine Blanc

Try this if you like: Rose (Damask, May), peony, pink pepper, soft florals.

Reminds me of: Stella, D&G Rose The One, Verino VV Rose, Dana Tabu Rose, YSL Baby Doll

Pros & Cons: First of all, I have to admit that Belle is a truly beautiful fragrance. Part of me was skeptical that it might go juvenile/candy/fruity-floral but I truly like everything about the product, from packaging to perfume.

That being said, rose has been done a million times in a million ways and as such there is absolutely nothing truly groundbreaking or all that unique about Belle; it is another pretty rose scent, end of story. Considering the lyrics to the films' opening song - "Look there she goes that girl is strange, no question...a most peculiar mademoiselle" - I had thought that Belle might offer a few surprises. But if the product is intended to be easy on the nose and please the largest common denominator of customer, I can see why the fragrance is charming rather than peculiar. In other words, for those with a lot of fragrance experience, Belle is sure to be a bore. For those who own one scent at a time and are passionate about Disney or the B&B films, this will likely be rose heaven.

A great deal of thought has gone into the packaging (see my video below) and this is one to keep as much for the box and bottle as the scent (though some will surely find the simple glass bottle as yawn-inducing as the scent). Priced at $90 USD for 2 ozs, this is likely not meant to be purchased for the kids, and as produced by the (once) legendary couture (and perfume) house of Worth - celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2017 - the fragrance is likely meant to evoke belle epoque (pun intended) Parisian elegance. The only problem is, these days who actually thinks of Worth fragrances as luxe (or who thinks of Worth at all?)?

Though Eau de Parfum concentration, the fragrance offers average longevity and modest sillage. Still, I do find myself pressing nose to wrist to get another whiff of the beauty that is Belle.

Notes: Pear, grapefruit, bergamot, red currant, pink pepper, Bulgarian rose, peony, May rose, lily-of-the-valley, ambrette (musk mallow) and woodsy notes.

Worth Belle Disney

" Press Release

Designer’s Description: "It is time to open a new chapter and to discover Belle by Worth, a luxurious fragrance inspired by the enchanting fable of Beauty and the Beast and the new, live-action cinematic interpretation of the story by Walt Disney films. This elegant and sophisticated fragrance takes its inspiration from the important message at the heart of the fairy tale that true beauty resides within, from the inspiring, courageous character of Belle and from book-loving British actress, Emma Watson, who plays the role of Belle in the film. An age-old tale of inner beauty is reinterpreted into an enticing and “conscious” fragrance for today, with a special message of empowerment at its heart for the modern woman.

Inspired by the magical and transformative rose at the heart of the fable of Beauty and the Beast, Belle by Worth is the creation of master perfumer, Honorine Blanc of Firmenich, an avid reader who loves nothing more than to escape into the magical world of books. The fragrance embraces this enduring symbol of love and beauty, blending Rose de Mai with aromatic woods and spicy pink peppers to bewitching effect. Belle presents a luxurious wild rose bouquet with a juicy berry accord at its heart – effortlessly feminine, romantic, playful and chic.

Belle by Worth is presented in the couture house’s original, octagonal weighty glass bottle, which is inscribed with the W of the House of Worth. The bottle is topped with a sustainable wooden cap which is finished in metallic pearl and features the word “Belle” engraved in calligraphy in eternal gold. The packaging of the fragrance tells an entire story in itself - a beautiful, hollowed out book, taking its inspiration from intelligent beauty, Belle. Open the book to discover a secret message of empowerment that resonates through time alongside the precious fragrance Belle by Worth, awaiting its recipient to Read. Dream. Believe.

Worth, the first couture house, not only carries a wealth of artistic heritage but now once again defines modern day masterpieces and Belle by Worth marks an entirely new chapter with their first fragrance launch for over a decade. Developed in conjunction with Akita Brands, Belle by Worth is also the first fragrance to be created and distributed by Akita who are intent on spreading the message of conscious beauty in the 21st century and to support global powerhouses with vegan, cruelty free and provenance-conscious beauty."

Worth Belle Beauty and the Beast Disney fragrance poster

Number of times tested: 2 times over the last week from a current bottle sent to me by Worth.

Number of sprays applied for this review: 1 spray to the back of my hand.

Fragrance strength: Eau de Parfum

Development: (Linear / Average / Complex): Belle is an easygoing, straightforward floral fragrance where gentle May and Bulgarian roses (this is not the deep, dark, vamp kind of rose) are paired with tender peony. There are no sharp edges here; likewise, there isn't anything too challenging or avant garde about the composition.

Juicy notes of grapefruit, red currant and pear are subtle and ultimately serve to sweeten the florals; with time, I detect a red wine note that is likely the interplay of the fruit and flowers. Pink pepper is apparent, especially in the opening and adds a spicy kick to the topnotes. A few minutes into the development the lily of the valley note becomes evident and the ambery musk mallow makes its appearance as the warm anchor of the basenotes. Simple yet lovely, expected yet utterly enjoyable.

Longevity: (Short / Average / Long-lasting) One single spray stayed powerful for about 90 minutes and then faded to a soft, amber-warmed skin scent for another 3-4 hours.

Sillage: (A Little / Average / A Lot) Belle is likely office safe if used with a modest hand. It projects well for about one hour and then becomes quieter thereafter.

Worth label

Note about the packaging: I must say the packaging is quite impressive. The outer packaging does indeed look like an antique book complete with printed spine. The book box comes in one of three colors - dark blue, olive green and scarlet red.

The cover reads Disney Belle and is subtitled "Based on the movie Beauty and the Beast". Upon opening the "book", there is a cover page that reads "Beauty is generous and fears nothing. Beauty is the knowledge that there is always more to things...Read. Dream. Believe." The words "Worth Paris" grace the bottom of the cover page.

Turning the cover page reveals a gold card with an illustrated image of Emma Watson as Belle in blue and white dress, holding a book. The side of the card reads "Do it with passion or not at all." Upon removing the card one finds the octagonal glass bottle with matching wooden cap, inscribed with the name Belle on its top.

The spine reads "Beauty and the Beast"; "Once upon a time"; "Worth Paris"; "The gift of a rose"; and "Beauty is found within". Silhouettes of Mrs. Potts, Chip and Lumiere accompany the text.

The back of the "book" offers "Ma cherie, mademoiselle, you know it in your heart that only those who can see beyond appearances cans ee true beauty. Your beauty, the beauty of knowing who you are. Beauty is more than what we see in front of us, beauty is a way of seeing the world. Beauty is being what you want the world to be. Beauty is knowing that everything you ever wished for can come true if you do it with your heart, because beauty always lights the way." This is accompanied by a silhouette of Belle and the Beast dancing in formal attire.

Where can I buy it? Available in select boutiques priced at $90 USD for a 2oz EDP spray.

Disney and Worth team with Akita to create Belle Eau de Parfum

The Bottom Line:  In my search for bargain fragrances I once came across a $5 bottle of Disney Princess Tinker Bell perfume (green box, simple round bottle) and decided to buy it just for fun. I was shocked to find that it not only smelled great (a genderless woody citrus) but it had great lasting power. I admit that it made me curious about others from that series.

Aside from Tinker Bell, I've never had an experience with a Disney scent until Belle and so really wasn't sure what to expect. Once I learned that the fragrance was being launched in conjunction with the great house of Worth (of Courtesan, Je Reviens and Dans la Nuit fame) my interest grew. Then I learned who the perfumer was and figured it had to be decent.

As you can tell from my review, Belle is by no means groundbreaking and you probably already have more exciting rose fragrances in your wardrobe. That fact aside, it is a quality product, one that is ideal for the collector, fan or die hard rose-lover (the target customers). This specific rose belongs to the soft and tangy group, the highlights here being the pear, grapefruit and red currant that along with the pink pepper add a zesty tone to the fragrance.

This one will likely be on sale at shops throughout Disney parks and will likely sell incredibly well as the perfect keepsake souvenir of a fun-filled vacation. Why buy Bvlgari when you can buy Belle?

The box is just great but the bottle is really ... basic. I expected some theatrical, diamond cut masterpiece with a cap imprinted with a crown or rose petals. It's kind of bit like Emma Watson - pretty enough but nothing special.

Very likely some much needed PR (and sales!) for the sadly waning House of Worth... Very clever and gorgeously designed packaging!

I love Beauty & The Beast, am rose obsessed and the packaging is gorgeous... although the bottle itself is a bit plain. Would've loved to see a rose print on it! Thanks for the article. Unlikely I'll be able to purchase it in Australia though; even if I could afford it.

La DameDeNoir
La DameDeNoir

Just an expensive prop for big little girls with a lot of money.

It is a pity to see what Worth has became. It was once the oldest and most prestigious fashion house still open. The house which designed gowns for woman like Empress Eugènie de Montijo and Elizabeth of Austria, now reduced to produce merchandising of a very mediocre Disney film (I am a great fan of Beauty and the Beast, and although I find the 1991 animated film a good rendition of the original tale, the 2017 remake just does not make sense).

Ugh... I know it's logical, but does it HAVE to be rose-centric?? I am NOT a rose fan, but I AM a huge B&tB fan, both original and new. As a teenager I identified so much with Belle that it hurt! Haha. The packaging is to-die-for, but I can't do that price for the packaging alone.

Being a Beauty & The Beast original movie lover and a rose-obsessed person named Belle, I obviously have to have this in my life! Thank you so much for your detailed and brilliant review Marlen! :)

Ps: Please tell us where you got it?? I've been scouring the web and couldn't find a way to order.

In the UK it is exclusive to The Fragrance Shop.

Still testing it out but first impression is pretty underwhelming for the price tag. Hopefully the scent improves in time.

It sounds very interesting, but the bottle itself is not a big deal.
