“Butterflies are said to love lantana flowers and the shrubs always attract hordes of them when in bloom.”

Common lantana is an evergreen shrub from the tropics. The species will grow to 6 ft. high and may spread to 8 ft. in width, with some varieties able to clamber vine-like up supports to greater heights. Stems are square in profile, with small prickles. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs. They are broadly oval, rough with short hairs, with finely toothed edges. When crushed they have a strong and spicy smell. The flowers are a mixture of cream, pink or orange numerous small rounded heads, often in two colors, yellow and red. The fruits are fleshy berries in clusters, green ripening to black.

Lantana species are widely spread weeds in warm climates. Lantana camara is poisonous to livestock and humans. This plant is very attractive due to its flowers and is used decoratively. However, the Lantana camara is considered to be an invasive species in many tropical and subtropical areas. As an invasive species, it has potential to flourish well and has covered large areas in Australia, India and Africa. Birds help to spread it by ingesting and then dispersing the seeds. In Australia it is a weed of national significance and must continuously be suppressed and destroyed.

ESSENTIAL OIL

The main constituents of the essential oil are the caryophyllene 34.79%, geranyl acetate 22.12%, terpinyl acetate 5.84%, bornylacetate 4.13% and D-limonene 2.27%. Forty-one components are present, which account for 93.25% of the oil.

Method of Extraction – Steam distillation of leaves
Consistency – Light
Strength of Aroma – Strong, woody undertone, almost basil-like aroma
Blends well with – Bergamot, rosemary, clary sage, jasmine
Color - Pale yellow to yellow liquid

USES

Lantana oil is used in the treatment of skin, itches and as an antiseptic for wounds. In leprosy and scabies, decoctions were applied externally. Leaves are used to treat cuts, rheumatisms, ulcers, catarrhal infection, tetanus, rheumatism, malaria, cancer, chicken pox, asthma, ulcer, swelling, eczema, tumor and high blood pressure. L. camara is one among the most toxic plants known so far. However, the toxicity occurs only on the consumption of a high amount of plant material.

So interesting to read about the different perceptions and associations with this plant.
A famous old English saying goes "One man's poison is another man's pleasure!" And it is so true: I lived in Florida for 2 yrs and could not believe the waste of Mangoes there. People planted the trees but did not harvest the fruits. Those trees were bending to breaking point of those magnificent fruits we pay a lot here in London depending on season.
Same applied to decorative plants....I loved Florida for everything grows at such ease (humidity) but I have missed the bulbs and cold/ temperate vegetation that I find somewhat more diverse.
Lantana is a great plant here in UK, so pls plant it generously for our bees and butterflies need all the nectar they can get!
Oh and THERE ARE NO WEEDS: they are just very very successful plants (survival of the fittest). Evolution is king! (But I admit to the need of controlling invasive species if they do harm to others)

It grows all over my yard here in the Florida Panhandle, like a weed!Bushes of it.
I have never smelled it and have no idea what it smells like but butterflies sure do love the stuff.
The blooms are very photogenic and I have taken many shots of Lantana,
But it is a weed to me.
I was surprised to learn that people actually
buy seeds for it for their flower gardens!
Please! Come on over to my yard and take all that you want.

I absolutely love the proliferation habit of Lantana. I often pair it with Nasturtium for early fall color in my garden. Thank you for the informative article.

I'm glad the reviewer knows that lantana is a noxious weed here in Australia. It is also known as "tick bush" and harbours ticks which are burrowing mites which get under human and animal skin. In humans they just cause pain swelling and inflammation but they can be fatal to animals. Lantana is pretty, and smells nice and spicy, but I hate it because of the danger it poses to my dogs. Luckily it is very dry where I live so it does not grow here, but if I take my dogs out to moist bush areas I have to watch out for it.

Thank you! I love the article! The info on its medicinal uses is of particular interest. Lantana used to grow wild everywhere here in central Florida... still does to a limited degree. I always loved the spicy "bite" of its fragrance. As a child I used to pick little bouquets of the flowers for my mother and grandmothers. Will have to check out the perfumes to see if I recognize it in the compositions. Thank you for the wonderful memories today!
