OUD SERIES: RealOud by Phoenicia Perfumes Review

When the moon is blue this is what you find: real Oud and real loud.

I can only imagine the intensive ingredient search and the iterations with extenders and amplifiers that went into this modern masterpiece. We are talking real barnyard, rolling in the hay, and skank++. The extenders, rather than being synthetic, are naturals including animalic extenders.

There are few comparisons to this unapologeticly amped up Oud with the very clever name which would work just as well by moving a capital letter: ReaLoud. If you have been traveling through the swirls of Abdes Salaam Attar’s Oud Caravan (which we will journey with later in this series) then that would prepare you, maybe, for this Oud from Phoenicia Perfumes.

Two swipes and you wonder whether you should leave the house. Hours later you are trying to figure out if you are in your house or your stable.

What I like to call the smell of Mother Nature regenerating comes from the Hindi Oud which has been blended with that shapeshifter, Laotian Oud. The peaked ripeness is so rich it borders on nausea but pulls back from that ill effect presumably with the other ingredients which I cannot smell. Many Oud collectors would not mix their Ouds unless it was with a musk grain. This mixture or mukhallat, albeit in alcohol, of Oud, Vetiver and Bulgarian Red Roses is brilliant and the only surprise is the price of $65 for 5 ml. Samples are also available for $15.

I suspect that the perfumer David Falsberg will be following the same route as Josh from Slumberhouse in finding out how to calculate a margin on what is essentially a work of passion rather than commerce.

RealOud – Batch 08/13
Hours of olfactory entertainment and satisfaction. Collector’s Item. 100% natural.

The scarcity of the supply of Oud means that batch numbers have been applied to this product to differentiate possible future variations.

RealOud Notes:
Hindi Oud, Laotian oud, Bulgarian Red Roses, Mitti, Ruh Khus, Classic Spices, Animalics

"I applied more and more (and more) of the unbelievable aroma … it’s alive and makes the wearer feel alive and unstoppable, kind of like the brilliant perfumer who created it and put his soul into making this the most beautiful thing he could."

I was able to smell this last year, and it is without question a scent unto itself. Challenging? Absolutely. But talking to David, and people who have worked with him, you know how much of his heart and soul are fully dedicated to this exploration, and he is after the 'real thing', no question. Your article reflects this very well, thanks.

Al-Mahgrib, if by some lucky chance you live anywhere near Cleveland, Ohio, you can smell it in person at Indigo Perfumery, which is where I bought my wonderful sample of Phoenicia's Far NWest.

Seems to be divine! Ruh Khus on its own smells nice; I wonder how it would smell like in the mukhallat with Indian and Laotian ouds.

Peace Al-Maghrib. There is a link underneath the yellow box to Phoenicia Perfumes. I want to come over right now and smell your shelves. I am off to find Shamamatul Amber right now. Your Uncle was a perfumer or he had these in his collection?
