Ardent Rose

In Guilford, Connecticut, a unique garden grows, one that provides more than simply the beauty of nature's queen of flowers. Since 2009, Roses for Autism (RFA) has provided career training for transition age students with Autism at the historic Pinchbeck Farm by growing and selling flowers. Among other blossoms, the dynamic nonprofit produces the fragrant Lavande Rose. It is with this beautiful aroma as inspiration that RFA developed their first fragrance, Ardent Rose. 100% of the proceeds from sales of Ardent Rose benefit the program.

“In order to further fund our efforts, we were looking to create a non-perishable product that aligned with our core offerings,” said Michelle Ouimette, Managing Director of Roses For Autism and Ability Beyond.

Dr. Robert Bedoukian - the President of Bedoukian Research Inc., a flavor and fragrance company located in nearby Danbury, CT - saw the potential for a perfume based on the farm's Lavande Rose and sponsored the full development of the perfume by international fragrance producer Robertet Incorporated.

NOTES

Lavande rose, Magnolia,
Geranium, Sandalwood,
Musk, and White Amber.

A 1.7 oz EDP of Ardent Rose is packaged in a light pink box with a hand-tied pink ribbon. It is available for $42.99 USD with free shipping. All proceeds directly benefit the Roses for Autism program. "Revenue generated by sales of the perfume will allow RFA to expand their scholarship program in order to help even more people achieve meaningful employment and personal success. Bedoukian Research fully funded the initial production of 5,000 bottles. Since the perfume’s launch in March 2016, the organization has sold almost 1,000 bottles," explains Roses for Autism.

“We have started to build a sensory garden but will need financial support in order to complete it,” said Ouimette. “A sensory garden can be therapeutic and educational for a variety of individuals, especially those with disabilities that affect their sensory responses as is the case with Autism.”

Roses for Autism explains: "According to Autism Speaks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies around 1 in 68 American children as on the Autism spectrum – a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Autism Spectrum Disorder affects over 3 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. When individuals with Autism reach adulthood, the unemployment and underemployment rate is nearly 88%. Adding a non-perishable product to the Roses for Autism gift line offers their interns more business learning opportunities."

Roses for Autism, in conjunction with its parent company, Ability Beyond, helps young adults acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and experiences to ensure a successful transition to adult life. Roses for Autism asserts that "When individuals with Autism reach adulthood, the unemployment and underemployment rate is nearly 88%. Adding a non-perishable product to the Roses for Autism gift line offers their interns more business learning opportunities."

But what does the fragrance actually smell like and would it be a successful purchase for perfume lovers? I'm happy to report that indeed the fragrance is truly lovely. In fact, Lovely by SJP is a fragrance I am immediately reminded of when wearing Ardent Rose. Replace the lavender and apple with magnolia and rose and you get the point; Ardent Rose could be Lovely's sister rose scent.

Purple roses

Ardent Rose opens with a soft, airy rose and magnolia accord. I'm a huge fan of magnolia so was pleasantly surprised to see it so well presented here. Whereas many rose aromas are deep, rich, and well, perfumey, Ardent Rose is gentle and fresh-smelling with a light citrus hint, likely the result of the geranium. The base is supported by subtle sandalwood and white amber. Ardent Rose boasts moderate sillage and longevity and would make a great gift for a socially conscious fragrance lover or anyone who enjoys fresh florals.

Roses for Autism is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social enterprise whose mission is to foster meaningful employment for individuals with Autism. Proceeds from flower sales and its exclusive Ardent Rose perfume fund scholarships and career training for transition age students with Autism. Visit rosesforautism.com.

I would love this but I live in the UK. I have Aspergers syndrome and have loved perfumes and using my sense of smell since I was small and sat in corners flicking books for hours and sniffing their pages.

What a fantastic project! I would definitely snap this up if it was available in the UK. As the parent of two tiny humans with Autism (and as a rose fanatic!) this makes me smile. I hope it does really well.

I'm glad to see Ability Beyond phased out Sheltered Workshops. I was a little worried about that when I saw this article on the front page.

I have autism myself and I agree with paneradfisk for the most part. While my interests have not helped me find employment, there is a lack of acceptance of disabled individuals even when the manifestation is harmless.

I'm learning so much from you and all the Fragrantica contributors - re scent, history, science etc surrounding fragrance. Awesome website

What an amazing idea and worthwhile charity. Sadly, the fragrance cannot be shipped outside the US; I would definitely consider purchasing such an ethical product, though.

Thank you for writing such an interesting article, Marlen and bringing this to people's attention - I hope many US citizens buy the fragrance, given your excellent review.

This is a great initiative close to my heart, being autistic myself and having experienced discrimination in the workplace because of lacking knowledge about our condition. It's good to see a non profit organisation actually believing in us, rather than stigmatizing autism and thinking we aren't capable. Actually, I often see autism as an advantage - when we are interested in something, we can learn fast and become extremely good at it. Also, I love Lovely and I love rose, and I look forward to purchasing this.
