Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery at The Fragrance Salon

Every perfume house, especially a small, independent one that is run by its owner and perfumer in one person, is established with a certain concept or idea that is reflected in its fragrances, or sometimes in its bottles and packaging. Hardly ever, though, does that concept cover the whole distinctive image of the brand.

But I can name two brands that certainly do have their own very distinctive styles, which are carried through in every detail and are visible from whatever angle you look at them. I am talking about Opus Oils and Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery.

Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery was founded by its perfumer Laurie Stern. This brand appeared for the first time in Fragrantica News with the perfume Bed of Roses (a delicious, delicious rose scent), and recently Ida Meister wrote an inspiring review about their latest scent  Fleur de Caramel. Ida always finds the right words for everything, so she described the brand's style as "a sentimental vintage." Fonts, images, satin bags, decorations and ornaments, cats and even colors make this brand very special, and I see in it not only a perfumer's love for everything curly and feminine, but also a sweet irony, as a part of the feeling of love.

Laurie creates perfumes using only natural botanical ingredients, which are cruelty-free, Leaping Bunny certified, and contain no phthalates and synthetics. Essences are sourced from all over the world, but some of them Laurie produces by herself with good old techniques like distillation and enfleurage. She also has her own bees. On my question of how bees tolerate a perfumer by their hives (I have heard bees don't like perfume or any strong scent from a hive keeper), Laurie said that they loved her, because she had never robbed them, she took only a very small amount of their product for her perfumes. Laurie has a perfume devoted to her bees, named Honey. I have a sweet tooth and love honey perfumes. This one is sweet, homey, natural, slightly animalic, deliciously floral, powdery... I am writing all these compliments smelling Honey over and over from my wrist.

All these natural perfume liquids have a beautiful color.

FIR EVER YOUNG

This fragrance stole my heart. Being Russian, I love coniferous forests; I used to think that a real forest is one with firs and pines, and I spent a lot of my childhood in these kinds of forests, so I dare to say that I know the smell of pine bark heated in the sun, and fir needles ground between my fingers, as well as what they smell like in Spring. I also know that a Russian bath made of fresh fir wood smells better than the air in any spa salon. All these recollections lively drew by in front of my eyes, when I smelled Fir Ever Young, which I chose because of its name.

This is a wonderful summer forest: the woods heated by the evening sun, sweet juices brought out to the wooden skin of these noble trees—or, if you prefer to think about winter trees, they're warmed and sweetened by the forthcoming joyful holiday season.

Notes: wood and needles, black currant, citruses, frankincense and agarwood.
