Laurie Stern (Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery) sent me her latest perfume recently because I asked her to—and I’m glad she offered. I met her a year ago at Sniffapalooza Sunday and found the lady very likeable and her perfumes even more so.

Laurie composes within the botanical arena, and her perfumes are over-the-top opulence in the best way: sumptuous, full-bodied, rounded compositions with character. They satisfy the senses.

She is a romantic at heart: her style is Victoriana-inspired, with ornamentation, color, and whimsically-depicted cats in the forefront. Everything on her website is presented in a sentimental vintage manner. While her style is not my style, her perfumes ARE. And they are costly, because all her materials are rare and of the finest quality available, blended meticulously, seamlessly. If one cannot afford a bottle, then a sample is worth obtaining; such olfactory luxury is a real delight.

Fleur de Caramel inebriates.
Cognac, frangipani, jasmine, tuberose, Tamil Nadu sandalwood, Tahitian vanilla base…red mandarin, spicy butterfly lily—what are you waiting for? I sniff and sniff my hand some more, I have no desire to wash my hand, if I can help it. [It’s a good thing I can forestall bathing for awhile, because there is good longevity to this perfume, and I don’t want to waste the few precious drops I’ve got.]

Floral Generosity is at the heart of Fleur de Caramel.
If summer sang, it might sing this, the song of respite and repose among the blossoms, an ease of spirit and leisurely pace. We cannot all be in Grasse, Firenze, Tunisia, Savannah or Southern California—but when we inhale Fleur de Caramel, we may as well be. ;-)

Indulgently fulsome, languorous and sensual: it feels like dolce far niente to me. Laurie Stern’s work is certified by Leaping Bunny, a coalition of eight animal rights protection groups, which assures that no animal testing is a given. There are absolutely no animal musk or fixatives in her perfumes; she uses organic grape alcohol and jojoba oil in her products as well as beeswax from her own bees.

At the recent Artisan Fragrance Salon in San Francisco, Fleur de Caramel walked off with the Gold Award for Best All-Natural Scent—along with multiple other awards.

I recommend visiting her website and exploring on your own: Honey, Bed of Roses, Narcissus Poeticus, oh my! Oils and frostings for face and body = divine decadence.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  ;-)

I'd like to try it, but those prices! I don't see myself paying $30-$75 for a sample either.

Thank you so much, Ida for your review! I loved making this perfume and I am am so happy that it is "dolce far niente" for you. I had to look that up ( I speak some french, but not italian) and my favorite description of it was "enjoying life's passions without a care"! If I can make something that can transport one to that place, I'm a happy camper! That's just what I love about perfume, that it does transport! This perfume called me to wrap it like extra fancy candy, so I did. Thanks for the wonderful comments too. XOXO~Laurie

I'm not generally a fan of Victoriana but her lovely packaging looks like a perfect complement for the beautiful fragrances. All around looks like a must-try!
