Armand Basi Homme Fragrance Reviews

One of the most underrated fragrances I can think of. If I'd never known this fragrance and sprayed it out of a bottle of Parfums De Marley, I would gladly have paid $300 for a bottle. Instead I can have it for $30, it's the perfect bedtime fragrance, relaxing, a hint of that baby powder smell with a creamy base

First, I'll review the bottle: it's crap. When I tried to spray it for the first time, the sprayer button thing refused to be pushed down. It was impossible to use and so I had to send it back.

The scent is sort of non-sweet, creamy, herbal and slightly spicy. It's not bad, but it's a bit boring in my opinion. It's neither here nor there. Not very sweet, not very spicy, not citrusy. Bland is the most suitable word I can think of.

I have worn this fragrance in my years before university and it performed very nicely. Not very complimented but still smelt different than the rest. Serious but mysterious, nice at close distances during night outs is when it has performed best. Compliments at close range.

It is definetly a good fragrance, I recommend giving it a try, I still have a bottle with me, good memories, nice smell and warm feeling. Aaahhh this nutmeg + cardamom is amazing.

Time passes and in my personal case I end up coming back to it. Signature.

Sometimes this stuff really shines and sometimes I just can't stand it. My main problem is that it gets rubbery, but in a very awkward, peppery way compared to the benchmark Bulgari Black. In the top, I'm finding a pleasant vanillic wood scent with a set of spices (clove?) similar to what I found in Cacharel Nemo. But as it progresses, it gets deeper, darker and mustier, more like licorice which I don't like. The pattern seems to be that when I've been sniffing and contemplating for a while, it's all licorice and rubber, but when I come and sniff it for the first time after a short break, it's woods and spices like a slightly harsher Nemo. My mild dislike for the smell pales in comparison to my frustration with its inconsistency, even though it's probably my own fault for letting myself get fatigued to the very notes that I like the most.

This is a scent that can be worn at anytime. Its low profile is great for everyday use. I think its a warm calming scent that dose not over power and is pleasant. This I believe is a great office or meeting scent. A lot of natural notes that linger but dose not over whelm. Great for family functions. Dose not smell like anything else. Distinct in its sutalness.

Early impressions of this are very good. It has components of Body Kouros, Le Male, Armani Code, and Azzaro Visit (a similar cedar/nutmeg/guiacwood accord in each, although it is more woody and prominent in Visit than Armand Basi PH).

I love the interplay between the light/white notes (tonka, vanilla, lily of the valley, lilac) and the dark guiacwood which is bolstered by some anise-like note. Thanks to the prominent guiacwood, this scent is more waxy/woody vanillic rather than powdery vanilla (as is Armani Code).

Sweet without being too sweet, sexy without being ostentatious about it like 1 Million or its ilk, and very versatile. This was a blind buy that went very very well!

Yes, as others mention, think of Jacomo Rouge, Body Kouros, Le Male, etc. It's got its own niche among them, this one being more subtle and well behaved. When I think of an oriental "masculine" fragrance, though, I think of ones like Opium Pour Homme EdP or the original men's fragrance by Guess.

I wanted to re-do this review because, previously, I had only a sample, but now I have a big bottle.

There was some trepidation that the big bottle wouldn't live up to the sample, as I've had that happen a few times. In this case, I actually enjoyed the big bottle more. This is GREAT stuff.

While, I don't care for the initial burst the entire rest of the way, and it's a long journey, is just fantastic.

That lilac note has to be the reason this one is so different. An incensey, vanillic with a hint of lilac. One of the best things I've ever smelled.

I've been debating booting Givenchy Play as my signature and replacing it with this one.

So justly sweet, smooth and subtle...What a tremendously nice find.

Decent bottle of juice. I, too, got the Le Male-vibe, but not as rich. Rather linear to me initially, but my bottle has opened some to show some nice light notes and nuances along with the main note that stays, tonka bean. I actually feel it is rather dilute for a composition in this realm (especially next to Le Male). Tonka bean - decaffeinated? ;-)

Seriously, though, this is not offensive or bad - I just don't understand all the hype and reviews transcending this fragrance's quality or originality into the stratosphere. Personally, I believe this is more of a true oriental fougere with the notes presented. The lavender in this is a touch synthetic, but incorporated rather nicely. I get the very forward Tonka Bean, cinnamon, nutmeg and sandalwood - nice play between those notes. White musk is one of my favorite base notes in fragrance (I look for it) as it offers warmth, but also cleanliness in a scent. This has it, but the sweet components on top make it hard to find. The cardamom is a nice note, but not as prevalent as I would like. Lilac is soft in the heart and the lily-of-the-valley is a light, subtle note. Incense is not really "forward" here. What I get is a light, unburned accord of an incense cone or stick that is composed vanilla with some spices and light wood.

If it had a stronger vanilla finish, it would be considered an attempted knock-off, so Armand Basi, I think, went for a more lifted white musk/light wood finish with tonka bean the key base notes versus a heavy vanilla - nice, but it doesn't project after the first 30 minutes. It is more of a skin scent with a good blend of notes that waft up to your nose. Pretty good stuff - I will throw in a "like" because it is decent juice and very wearable.

In the realm of JPG Le Male (which is better than this) and a few other fragrances that attempt to do the same - one that stands out for me (especially for the price) is Jacomo de Jacomo Rouge! That is so much richer, complex and just plain deeper. The key is that the notes are more distinct and there is a great spicy quality to it! And, although Le Male by JPG is very, very good (it used to be one of my signature scents and is still in my collection) - I found TL Pour Lui by Ted Lapidus to be outstanding! It has, possibly, the warmest and nicest vanilla I have found in a scent articulated with other great notes in this similar vein.

Armand Basi made a nice scent here - 6.5/10 and wearable year-round. But, I just feel there is something missing in depth, projection and longevity. It is not as powerful as some of the other scents (which may be a good thing). Nice, decent, clean - better in warm weather and fine for the office, but not "special".

**Update** - Wore this a couple more times and just compared it side by side with the Basi Homme bottling - I sprayed each on my arm to compare as I actually like this more now than before when I wrote the initial review. What it lacks in originality and longevity, I find that a moderate to liberal application of the original tall black & white bottle of Armand Basi Homme is a decent oriental fougere with nice blend of nutmeg, cinnamon & cardamom mixed a nice fresh clean white musk, vanilla and tonka bean along with well-presented wood (cedar mainly). I have tried this next to JPG Le Male as well - it definitely less sweet and a cleaner scent. Not the powerhouse in projection or longevity, but a nice blended scent that has good balance and wears pretty close. Raising my score - 7/10, as I like this subtlety...

Not too bad, but not so great and very artificial! Some people say this one reminds them Le Mâle: I don't agree with this point of view! I think JPG is better, and perhap's it explains his succes! Armand Basi is sweeter and more linear: Tonka bean, tonka bean, and tonka bean Whereas I can smell a true evolution in JPG, from mint to vanilla and tonka bean, through lavender and cinnamon!
At the end, I don't like the plastic top of the bottle, very cheap.

SIMPLY STUNNING!
My mouth keeps watering and I am repeatedly sniffing my wrists like crazy when wearing this! What a fragrance!
Another blind buy, another success! These raving reviews were absolutely right - Armand Basi is a fantastic scent!
Cinnamon is extremely prominent and kind of dry - in a really good way, then the cardamon, nutmeg and tonka bean make it really oriental fougere with the woody touch of sweet sandalwood, cedar and guaiac wood. It is quite linear but lasts and lasts on my skin and does the trick. Wow!
It can easily work as a UNISEX: being reasonably sweet and comfortingly sensual. Ideal for colder days or romantic occassions in the evening :)
I think that it is much better than many top popular fragrances of more renown, also in terms of the price.
True, it is a bit synthetic, but what isn't in this price category?

Good God! This is a great fougere oriental. Probably the best one I have ever smelled. This is similar to Perry Ellis White, Le Male, Jacome Rouge but in fact superior to all. This is sweet, soapy, spicy. This does last. I got the 125 ml bottle on discount and I am glad that I did. This will be my signature scent from now on. 10 out of 10. The juice in this bottle smells like heaven!

Armand Basi Homme has real class! Starts as a lovely fresh soapy, spicy aromatic. The drydown is a beautiful, mellow oriental. This gem is unfortunately in the shadow of Le Male but it shouldn't be!! This is a great men's fragrance with great sillage. Reminds me of Christmas. Definitely one of THE best colognes for men....fabulous. I have tried many fragrances - but this one is up there - in the top ten!!
