Blackberry & Bay Fragrance Reviews

Nataly17
Nataly17

I bought this about 3 years ago (loved from the 1st sniff!) but was very disappointed by longevity, it lasted like 30-60 minutes. So I left it on the shelf and just enjoyed sniffing the lid from time to time. But when I tried it again several months ago, longevity became amazing! The perfume somehow matured, now it stays with me for the whole day! And I see the same impressions in the review above! Really interesting, maybe JM should test ways to "mature" it before putting into bottles?

Now I'm really sad that I bought just a small bottle 3 years ago, maybe I should stockpile and forget about it for the next couple of years!

The smell itself is just lovely, sweet-spicy, not irritating at all. Blackberry and Bay as the name says :)

Nice, inoffensive and more than acceptable as far as This Kind of Thing goes.

How far this kind of thing goes is arguable, as all JMs I have had a chance of testing seem to be pretty simple things more (much more) suitable for room fragrances than personal perfume. This one is more interesting than some, anyway, and pretty pleasant. But I can't imagine paying the money they charge for this.

I never understood the hype and cult surrounding Jo Malone, and having tested several of the frags I still don't, but there we go.

Absolutely heavenly on first spray,I just wish it stayed there. It is lovely but the fresh blackberry doesn't last long. A gentle, fresh skin fragrance, oh so yummy when first sprayed!

This perfume is unapologetically green. I don't really visualize the blackberry (but it's there). To me it feels like an afternoon spent in the field, looking and picking at different herbs and weeds. It also reminds me of a good salad you get at those restaurants that specialize in local organic food. It's simple, understated but one of a kind. I imagine this is what a guy who is well read and humble would smell like, or a woman who has very few clothes but they are all of good quality and timeless style.
I got a sample at a counter in Macys. The lady working there was very nice. They didn't have a sample of the scent I liked best (orange blossom), so she offered to give me the only sample they had. The experience gave me a good impression of the brand. Will possibly buy a full bottle from them in the future.

Update: finally I have the samples, I love it so much! Fresh blackberry, straight from the fridge, but unfortunately on my skin it is a bit masculin. Definitely I would fall in love with a man who wears this fragrance.

I was desperate for energy and this fragrance layered with red roses cheered me up , when I had the toughest moments in my practicum.
How shall I describe this?
My negative energy in the blue mornings almost swept away by the bay and blackberry, then the sweetness of the rose added the happy part of my emotions to my rest of the day, autumn dry breeze didn't slow me down, because the scent in the air from my top gave me the energy I needed to carry on.

Bay-heavy scents have been popular for men for literally hundreds of years, and that's all I smell when I smell this-- old fashioned men's cologne. I love blackberry, but prefer them in a sweeter rendition. This is too masculine for me personally.

Now I understand why the reviews on this are so varied, it is a really hard scent to describe. This took me a few uses to acquire an appreciation for it, its very strange how the more I smelled it, the more I grew fond of it. At first sniff I found it unappealing and sort of understood one of the reviews here comparing it to insect repellent. I didn't get any of the notes listed at all. But each time I wore it, its like my nose got more acquainted with it and I started picking up more from it. My biggest fears buying this blind were that it would be too masculine or too much like savory bay leaf. Luckily neither of those turned out to be true for me (I do not like wearing masculine leaning scents at all). Instead on me this developed into a very sexy scent. It turns into a rich, tart berry/berry leaf scent that is slightly sweetly musky, and I find myself trying to smell my wrist or clothes to keep smelling it. I have a small size for now, but Im pleasantly surprised that I am reaching for this unique scent often compared to my usual fruit and florals.

I absolutely love this fragrance. The depth of the blackberry vs the herbal green of the bay is fantastic! I don't get any of the citrus on my skin, which is fine with me. It does not scream daytime on me. Nor does it say "going out". Somewhere in the middle

Wow, what a perfect combination of grapefruit and blackberry, which are the 2 prominent notes on my skin, this is rich and refreshing at the same time, that tasty juice, makes you want to drink (laughs). Performance is fair.

Hyper-realistic smell of blackberries, but for scents this natural there's bound to be a trade off in terms of longevity. It's a sad reminder that there's no substitute for the real thing, only fleeting reconstitutions of it.

I love blackberries and bay leaf so I was hoping for something promising. Jo Malone scents do not seem to work with my skin chemistry whatsoever.

On my skin: sweaty, musty armpit with a hint of sour, citrus cologne.

Coming to mind: a Ron Jeremy 1980's porno

There is something cold yet warm at the same time with this fragerance. Someone said like winter berries covered in snow and I totally agree. It is CLEAN yet CAPTIVATING and very COMFORTING. I was in an expensive, luxurious resteruant in America once and when I first smelled this it reminded me of there for some reason. The bay and berries together are so divine I cannot even really describe. It has a subtle greenness to it sort of like evergreen trees. It also has a calmness to it. A very rich, luxurious, comforting scent. I think this is marketed as unisex but to me it is a more female scent xoxo

I bought this duty free and blind as it was offered in an airline catelogue and I needed to get rid of some local currency. It came with the Lime Basil and Mandarin.

In the heat of an Australian summer I tried this for the first time. Immediately on the skin, I got a fresh and tart note, no sweetness to speak of. I get a strong sense off the blackberry. It felt cool but sustains a lovely human warmth as it settles into the bay while retaining the blackberry note throughout. It has a soft silage, perfect for me as I hate a perfume that enters a room before me.

I really love this frangrance and I am looking forward to trying this layered with the Lime Basil and Mandarin.

I got this as a free sample, and I didn't think I would like it because I'm not a real fruity fan, and I suspected it would smell too much like berries. Not that I don't like berries, these are beautiful here because they are tart, not sweet like the icky berry shower gels out there - really lovely, but it was too simple, too easy to pick out. Then the lovely earthy dry down happened and I was sold - loveliness. Don't like it enough to spring for a FB, but I will enjoy the sample now and then as my only berry scent and maybe track down another sample on ebay when that one is done. If you like berries, you must try this one.

This Jo Malone fragrance Is beautiful, evocative of the color green and I visualize fresh berries on a wreath in the snow. The air is crisp and cold and there are pine trees around. Tangy, sweet berries and green with a warm, sweet drydown.
Of course, this doesn't last long enough!
This little wood nymph has played her part and bounded off to do something whimsical in another part of the forest in all of 3 hours. But while she was there it was love!!! This is a wonderful holiday perfume- like Christmas in a bottle. It doesn't have the heaviness or spice associated with Christmas to me, but feels festive, crisp, and piney.
I also wore it in summer and the bright fruitiness with greens was cheery and bright. What a marvelous smell.

Love Jo Malone scents and this one tops them all. I love that i can wear it anytime of the day and still feel fresh and clean after a long day's work. The drydown is amazing. I sometimes layer it with nectarine blossom and honey. But it's good enough to wear by itself. If you had one JM fragrance to choose from, get this and you'll love it till the last spray.

This is the PERFECT fragrance for me!! For some reason, when I wear it, I think of fall, high school football games, being outdoors at night with a slight chill in the air, or walking through the woods/forest on a chilly day. I absolutely love that it is unisex because I am not a huge girly girl, when it comes to fragrances. I like androgynous scents for some weird reason. The blackberry plays such a great role because it isn't sweet like most other blackberry fragrances on the market. The bay leaf creates an earthy, herbal, cool feel. It smells unique with a mysterious quality that I consider memorable because I haven't smelled anything like it to date and I have tried hundreds of fragrances. The blackberry and bay mesh together seamlessly to create this beautiful fragrance. If you love the crisp, cool feeling that fall brings, give this a try. As for all of the comments regarding the JM fragrances not lasting but a few hours, I can spray 3 sprays in the morning and still smell it that night. Two thumbs up!!

I really cannot get enough of this fragrance, this is how much i love it. I cheated on my every other perfume with this bottle of blackberry and bay. Many times. It goes on when it's winter and it goes on when it is summer. A fruity, citrusy with a hint of bayleaf and vetiver fragrance. I wish the fragrance was EDP and lasted forever. Pricy for what you get in longivety, priceless for what you get in the composition.

Love love love.

imagine a blackberry at its peak maturity - now imagine slicing said BB with a sharp knife, the initial smell that rises from that cut is exactly what you get when you first spray this cologne. my girl absolutely adores it and so do i but sadly by the time we get in the company of other people the $140 cologne is just a skin scent. dont get me wrong, the opening isnt the only thing great about BB&BL the dry down is also heavenly but you really have to try hard to smell it.
if youre rich and can afford to shower in this by all means go ahead, its a great scent but i cant afford to pay retail for a scent that i need to carry with me 24/7

Natural sweetness of black berries and bay. This is sweet fruity scent but at the same time masculine because of the bay. More suitable for men, unless you layer it with something else to make it more feminine.

Fresh, tangy, sharp. Not overly sweet or too synthetic, as I fear with some blackberry scents.

I loved this one immediately. I don't smell many things like this on a day-to-day basis.

There's definitely a strong opening of blackberry and some supporting bay leaf. That lingers even after a dry-down, but gets reigned in by some woody, almost slightly masculine base notes.

That lemon citrus brightens and adds to the overall freshness.

This is the kind of scent that surprises me throughout the day. Once it dries down, the silage comes in a bit closer, but I get strong whiffs as I move about, and there's not a point through the process where these whiffs become anything other than the same fresh, tangy, summery scent.

Maybe it's the fact that I don't feel blackberry has as much of a distinctive scent as some other berries in the world, or maybe Jo Malone are just geniuses - but this is really incredible. They built something that's unlike most anything you can find in the "mass" market of perfumery.

Upon spritzing, you immediately get hit with a crushed blackberries and minty-sage bay leaf linen. I say linen, because the slap in the face isn't something sharp or heavy. You notice the scent, but it's not overwhelming.

The blackberry that almost tickles the back of your throat. The "bay leaf" element is noticeable - but I don't know that it's as green, earthy, or slightly sage-like that actual bay leaves can often emulate.

In the dry down (which, let's face it, happens after about thirty minutes) I get a really amazing mint chewing gum feel. You know the kind: sweet, minty, slightly synthetic, but still oddly appealing - almost the experience you get when you munch on chewing gum on an airplane to prevent your ears from popping.

Here's the low-down: This isn't the longest lasting fragrance (as most Jo Malone scents aren't), the sillage remains quite close to the skin, and the overall composition is unique, pleasant, and inoffensive. This would be totally appropriate to wear in an office, church, or on a first date. You won't have people running away from you with their noses pinched, but you also won't have someone calling you out and saying, "hey, I smelled something really similar to that the other day at the fragrance department in my local small-town department store.

If you like an earthy fragrance, a fruity fragrance, or something you can throw on and know it will smell elegant and interesting - this is for you. Good job Jo.

It's so natural and so good. A little on the pretty side to be a man's cologne but I think its safe to say it's unisex. I'm going ahead and buying it for my wife who doesn't typically like perfume. I think she'll love it! (If she doesn't, I'm keeping it).

When I started this hobby, I liked the Jo Malone fragrances but didn't appreciate at the time just how beautiful and natural smelling they are. (I keep smelling my arm as I write this)

Words cannot express how much I adore this scent! The price is not easily within my budget, but I had to buy it anyways. When I find better words, I will post again to discuss the trajectory.

I test drove this today becasue the Nordstrom associate was nice enough to give me a sample. I LOVE how it smells. Blackberry and very fresh, and very different from anything else in my wardrobe (which admittedly tends to run towards sweet vanilla patchouli bombs). I would definitely consider buying it.

The one problem: little sillage to speak of and basically no longevity. After an hour if you wanted to smell it AT ALL, you would need to stick your nose in either my neck or my elbow crease. So I guess my fiancé and I would be enjoying it and basically no one else, as I really don't want anyone else's nose in either of those places. ;) Maybe if you bathe in it?

For me, Jo Malone's Blackberry and Bay is one of the easier perfumes from the range to wear.
There are no complicated notes that interfere with the simple formula, and the name is pretty much an accurate description.

Whenever I spray this, I smell fruity purple blackberries straightaway, and watery, fresh, green leaves.
If you can imagine going blackberry picking on a summer's day, just after a brisk rainfall.

The cedar and bay leaves really do 'open' up for the berries, and lend the scent a delicate - but fruity, nonetheless - spicy drydown.

Longevity is really disappointing, however. Once sprayed, the scent lasts for a few minutes at most, with sillage being very soft.

If I could sum this scent up in two words for the amateur; Sweet and Fresh.

The opening of this fragrance is so sexy. Ultra tangy blackberry and dark green bay leaf. Sensual and spicy. I wish it stayed that way though. Dries down so quickly to a mild run-of-the-mill fruity fragrance with slight aromatic spiciness.

I am a man and I have over 150 different men's colognes. Got this one as a gift. The person gifting it did not realize it is designed for women. I wear it anyway and think it is fantastic. I find it more unisex.

The fragrance is fairly subtle. It is fruity, floral and if I tried to make a comparison with a man's cologne that I own it would be Yves Saint Laurent's Opium Pour Homme. Both have cedar and floral notes but Opium has black currant where this one has blackberry.

This is the first perfume I bought since discovering the joy of perfumes more generally. I smell lemon, green leaves and sap, and sweet & sour berries. It's a delicious fresh smell that truly reminds me of walks through a forest, but it doesn't last as long as I'd like, and I've discovered that other niche brands sell perfumes in EDT or EDP concentrations for a similar price, while Jo Malone is only EDC.

Everybody has different chemistry, preferences, way of smelling fragrance, and I have nothing against people who like this perfume, but this one doesn't sit well on me. It just doesn't work out with my chemistry. I love adding bay leaves when I cook, and I love blackberries. I can definetely smell the two, but just the bay leaf stands out way too much and though not heavy, it is making me nauseous. Thank goodness, I had a chance to try the sample first. I read from the website that it goes well with Orange Blossom and Osmanthus Blossom (both of which I own), but even adding Osmanthus Blossom wasn't able to ameliorate the intolerable aroma and even though I like to think that it may work out with other fragrances, I had such a heck of a time, I kinda don't want to try anymore. The top note was delicious and lovely, with bright citrus, berries and floral notes but it fades away REALLY quickly (I think it lasted like 15 secs), making its way to very strong, penetrating bay leaves added with something very herby that's not to my liking.

This is the scent I was hoping for from the famed Mure et Musc. Sweet, tart blackberries, but not bitter. The grapefruit and bay leaf make this fresh, not cloying, and overall it's a great summer scent. I think it tends slightly towards the feminine side, but only barely. And that may just be my skin. For anyone looking for a fruity scent that doesn't want the typical syrupy fruit, this is well worth a try. It's got some zing to it. Overall, it's a great mix of fresh, crisp fruit and subtle green notes. Very natural smelling, not synthetic at all. Sweet but not cloying, tart but not bitter. Superbly done.

This is a fresh, summery scent that begins with a sharp blast of tart grapefruit and blackberries. It's a natural fruit scent that's got an under-ripe, bitter sweetness, and I actually love that smell. As the dry down occurs I get hints of bayleaves that is soon eclipsed by the smell of a cedar. Soon after that the fragrance disappears. This is a great smelling fragrance, but I'm so disappointed that it doesn't last more than 3-4 hours.

I love this scent. It's something different for me, as someone who typically likes white flowers and oriental notes, but for some reason the masculine herbal notes mixed with the tangy tart fruit flavors really makes me happy. I feel less feminine wearing this, and also less mainstream and more interesting. It's a cool-girl scent for sure.

I do agree with some people's comments that it gets a bit soapy, but for some reason that doesn't bother me - maybe because it smells like the kind of expensive soap that you'd buy someone else as a gift but never waste the money on yourself. Or maybe it's because my mother made a lot of savory-smelling soaps as I was growing up. Either way, I'm certainly not disturbed.

There are 2 things that do bother me about this scent, though: first, the sillage is so light - I don't like to blow a room away, but when I smell this amazing I want someone to be able to notice! Second, as with many Jo Malone colognes, it's very short-lasting. Though it's not the priciest fragrance in the world, it costs enough that I don't want to have to spray it three times a day - le sad.

This is in the men's cologne section on most online stores. Its unisex. Not sure why its listed for women. That aside, this a very uplifting spring summer scent. It smells like realistic grapefruit, blackberries, and bay leaf. The dry down is like a really good laundry detergent. I'd rate this 10 out of 10. I'd like to see a more herbal version of this released. More bay leaf, a little mint and basil.

I smell the fruit first, then bay leaf enters a few minutes later, floating on top of the berry -- my favorite phase. Then it settles into something soapy and a bit sharp. I was very pleasantly surprised by how realistic the bay leaf was, but it sadly becomes a bit inconsistent after the first minutes, disappearing and sporadically cutting through the soapiness again. It does project well, though, and for all my rejection of the notion of gendered scent, I agree that it's rather a "masculine" fragrance. This is not a bad thing when you're seeking a break from your Classiques and your J'Adores.

Tried this today layered with JM Velvet Rose and Oud and OMG I smelled delicious all day long! The tart of the blackberry mixed with the sultry rose and oud is divine!

I received these two samples together to wear at the suggestion of the SA at Nordstrom and I don't usually care for their layering ideas, this combo is a winner!! The Blackberry & Bay alone is tart and cool but the Velvet Rose and Oud warmed it up nicely. When I first sprayed I thought it would be too much for this strange weather we're having (rainy, windy, tornadoes - cool then hot and humid), my goodness, but it was perfect. Today is a mild weathered day in the southeast, not too warm and just enough overcast to keep the temps nice.

The best part was how every now and then there would be this "burst" of something cool, fresh and clean...I think it was the blackberry again. I really don't know but I know it was lovely! So this combo is going to be my go to next fall and winter.

Bright, sharp, verdant fill-your-lungs-with-bramble-bush opening that drops into a juicy, jammy but not cloying loveliness. Perfect balance of indigo fruity sweetness with a tart hit. Had this on one wrist and wood sage (and invigorating) sea salt on the other, a perfect match if you want to layer to something with more depth. This one makes me feel uplifted yet comforted at the same time, gorgeous. Looking forward to spring.

Grapefruit and blackberry are the first notes when applying this scent. I also smell the bay leaf coming through a bit. The blackberry gets slightly cat pee-ish but it fades quickly. As the scent progresses, it becomes more sweet. It has a slightly floral cedar base with hints of vetiver and sweet blackberry on top.

Longevity and sillage are unfortunately poor on me.

An interesting combination of zesty and sweet notes. The grapefruit and bay leaf make it smell quite masculine, especially in the opening. I think this is a very pleasant scent, sweet, but a bit different than usual. The performance is very low on me, I only get two hours of longevity and sillage is moderate. I'd consider a full bottle if the performance was better.

A juicy grapefruit scent on top of blackberry note. I can sense the green elements, but not as much as I wished for. It’s so fresh and sweet at the same time. On me, it really lasts for at least a couple of hours, finding it perfect to wear at this time of the year.

This cologne is amazing, I've bought the body cream to layer it so that the scent lasts longer. The initial burst of blackberry is wonderful and the dry down is very soft, great scent for layering with other Jo Malone fragrances such as Wild Fig and Cassis or French lime blossom for a real twist. What I love about Jo Malone is that the colognes are intended to be mixed so you can create your exclusive fragrance. Blackberry and Bay body cream is beautiful to put on at night before going to bed - soft and relaxing.

Very realistic blackberry fragrance, green blackberry bush with ripen blackberries on it, to be exact.

The fragrance feels like cologne - somewhat watery but refreshing, not too sweet and perfectly unisex. At the dry-down the fruitiness wears out and more green-woody notes came in including a bay leaf. I cook with bay leaf a lot and love it, but I didn't care that much smelling it on my skin.

I haven't met a Jo Malone that I didn't at least like, but I LOVE this. B&B is unique, herbal and fresh with an underlying woodiness/spiciness. I will reiterate what other reviewers have described: This fragrance is ZESTY and AROMATIC. It is not sweet nor feminine but is not overtly masculine either. Blackberry in this isn't ripe/jammy, it is tart and more on the fresh, natural side. Right up my alley. (I think if you like Balenciaga Florabotanica, you could appreciate B&B).

I have reviewed this before, but it has been some time since there and long time between not wearing B & B.

I put some on last night and realised what I had been missing out on - I hadn't worn it for so long, as I started getting into warmer oriental perfumes, but whoa. B & B is even better than I remember.

One thing I forgot is it's lasting power. Even as it does fade over the day, it does last, and even after a shower I can smell it on my skin. There's a really beautiful herbal quality to it that I love that lend it an earthiness, and understated fruitiness.

It's such an uplifting scent to catch throughout the day, and I'm going to start wearing it more often I think. I might even indulge in time in a full sized bottle.

Worth the money if you are after something that's a little different, but has value in its longevity and power, and has a presence and feeling to it. It's refreshing but also has a certain warmth and cosiness to it. Sunlight on a blackberry bush.

This opens with a BLAST of grapefruit. Fresh, and clean and very real smelling. It slowly migrates to the fruity notes of blackberries. There are some green elements in there, which I love! Soon my absolute favorite part the drydown. It reminds me of the drydown in Hermes Eau des Merveilles. That salty skin ambergris vibe. But add in some lovely berries. DIVINE! This is a great everyday perfume for someone who wants to smell fresh but different. It's certainly a unique perfume.

Here's a review from someone who can't pick out individual notes very well! You know, one of us mere mortals...

My roommate introduced me to this scent, as she is a big fan of Jo Malone. And while I went crazy over Pomegranate Noir, Blackberry and Bay left me puzzled. Every time she spritzed this on, I always thought she had just come back from taking a shower. But she didn't just smell soap-y and clean, she smelled like a rugged Northwestern Old Spice wearing outdoorsman had just come out of the shower and slapped on some after-shave. But you know, a little less dramatic and in your face than that.

I tried on the perfume myself and detected much more of the tart berry and leafy greens up close, but overall, it still had that manly fresh from the shower scent to it.

I don't know if I'm the odd one out in experiencing Blackberry and Bay like this, but I like and dislike the perfume for this reason. I don't think I would purchase this myself, though I appreciate it when my female roommate walks around smelling like the man of my dreams.

Melon...followed by melon...followed by grass, witch hazel, nettles and...grass...repeat to fade.... Confusing and irritating because there's something, something in there I like. And, because I have a life I can't be bothered to work out what it is. Frustrating and therefore unnecessary. Annoying.

Bushy and brambly, this is a sparkling green interpretation of blackberry. After the grapefruit blast in the opening, the lemony, tart blackberry appears. Unfortunately, on me, the fruit gets lost in the woods, and after about half an hour, all I smell is dusty cedar and oak moss. Still, it's an interesting and realistic blackberry scent. Definitely not one for those who prefer fruity florals, however.

This is such a lovely fragrance; fresh, authentic and perfect for balmy days and evenings. The lasting power is pretty poor for the money. I mitigate this problem by spritzing it on my clothes, but I don't think I'm going to get another bottle of this when it (quickly) runs out.

I have a strange relationship with Blackberry & Bay. Half of the times I find it utterly charming and adorable while the other half just wish I had picked something more interesting instead.

The inital spray is grapefruit dominant with a touch of greenery (the bay?) but soon the blackberry blends in. Accompanied by the citrus is smells tart, juicy and very realistic. In a word: mouthwatering. I thoroughly enjoy this stage.

After a couple of hours it has already faded to the base which isn't very distinctive. A transparent woody skin scent with fruity hints, noticeable only when sniffing the wrist.

I find the approach and the concept quite sophisticated, it's a fresh fruity scent that manages to be joyous without being frivolous. Just not terribly exciting.

Oh well, maybe someday I'll spoil myself with the body cream and a large bottle to spray with abandon for the fun of it.

When I first spray this is is SUPER green. But within 5 mins it dries down to a sweet, yellow grapefruit scent. Pure grapefruit, with the green (bay) in the background. Unfortunately, I do not get any blackberry until the scent is on it's exit plan. Even then, it's overshadowed by grapefruit.

Very simple. Refreshing. Kind of timid. Crossover appeal-meaning I can see it being liked by young, old, and in between. Unfortunately it doesn't last past 3 hours on my skin and grapefruit doesn't tickle my fancy. I can see this being a scent for someone who doesn't like anything too (insert everything except for citrus LOL).

A very fruity blackberry scent. It is good, but it smells a lot like those fruity body splashes you see at Bath and Body Works. It doesn't smell like JM other elegant and refined scents. When I smell this, I think of Junior High school girls wearing this and smelling like a fruity floral blackberry.

Jo Malone makes excellent fragrances, nothing synthetic about a single one of them. Blackberry & Bay is wonderful; the perfect amount of woodiness & zest to tone down, but not overtake the very unique fruitiness that makes it what it is.

Don't be fooled by the female designation, I (male - 27) wear it and regularly get compliments from both sexes. Works great with 154 for a guy. Great stuff!

Tart , sweet and tangy, earthy and herbal,
This Jo Malone is fruity and fresh and realistic with an herbal kick !!!
Blackberries are my favourite berries and the herb Bay is one of my go to spices for cooking. Its a European smell to me , imagine an old Luxurious European Garden in the country with blackberry bushes and herbal gardens and cedar trees far beyond the hills wafting their aroma in the air. A handful of blackberries and raspberries overly ripe dripping juices down your arms as you indulge in eating them right of the bushes and the sun warming your skin with the deep red juice caked to your skin. That's what Blackberry &Bay smells like to me.
What keeps this from your regular fruity mess is the herbal aspect of the bay leave , gives this a mature twist and an a usual kick!
If you have lime ,basil mandarine this is a great one to combine it with !!!
Must have fragrance to add to my JM collection , great for spring , summer and fall!!!!
I just called Holt Renfrew to order this and they said its one of their best sellers .
Wearing this for a week now and its one of my very favourite perfumes. It moved to my top shelf. This is so pleasant and amazing my kids tell my how good I smell every day. I have a lime basil mandarine shower gel which I use , then I use the grapefruit lotion and over that I apply the Blackberry. It's an amazing combo and makes for a long lasting experience. I then do really after a few hours with lime basil or grapefruit spray as I have that in my purse. At home I use my big blackberry about 3 times a day , the best!!!

THIS is a really interesting fragrance. I decided to try it, and I love it. It's a very unusual fragrance- it's fruity and incredibly fresh, but not the least bit sweet or girly. I sprayed it on in the morning before work , and loved the way it lasted all day, waves of clean , delicious scent that had me sniffing my wrists , happy as a clam. It's really hard to find a fragrance that is uplifting and cheers me up in February (truly one of the most dull and horrible months of the year) but this fragrance does it for me. I wear lots of other Jo Malone fragrances, which I love, and now Blackberry and Bay is another keeper in my collection. A really wonderful fragrance. I hope they expand the product line and add a bath oil and body cream; I'ld buy both in a heartbeat. Great stuff.

Blackberry & Bay was gift in a swap, and I’d never heard of it before. I’m not foodie perfume lover, and I am only learning to appreciate sweet-savory combinations in the food that I eat, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect.

At the start, it starts off very crisp, like the smell that soft early spring pine needles emit when crushed, or the smell of green leaves and spiny brambles in a deep and wild blackberry patch. I think this is the bay, but my experience with bay is the dried leaves you use in soup—this is not a dry smell, nor is it a savory smell; instead, it’s a fresh, crisp, clean (non-citrus, non-floral, non-soapy) smell. By virtue of what it is and all that it is not, it is quite unique.

After about an hour, a slightly sweet juiciness emerges. It’s quite fruity, in an authentic and natural way—vs being super sweet. It’s not overripe, oozing berries, but lightly crushed barely ripe berries. After about 3 hours total, this fragrance fades to just a light breeze scented with a hint of bubblegum. Lasting power does leave something to be desired, but this is a very pleasant unusual but not offensive or loud fragrance. Sillage was not huge, but I enjoyed it.

I debated with myself for months, before I purchased this fragrance. I tested it countless times, before I finally caved and bought my bottle of it. I could not get the scent out of my head! Tart blackberries surrounded by light woods and a touch of bay. The opening is bright burst of grapefruit, not sour but fresh!. As others have mentioned this is not a jammy blackberry, but fresh and tart like the real fruit. There is a light airiness to this fragrance, which makes it easy to wear. It’s a simple blend which I love, quite unique from my perspective.

Blackberry & Bay is one of my favorite fragrances from Jo Malone. My only complaint about it is the lasting power. I only get a few hours or so before I feel the need to respray it. However, after I refresh it the lasting power does get substantially better. It’s a lovely fragrance and I suggest taking the time to test it. Blackberry& Bay is one of the fragrances you have to spend some time thinking about before you take the plunge and buy it. ^_^

One of my favorite layering combinations for this fragrance is pairing it with Nectarine Blossom & Honey. <3

Jo Malone is the friend I always want to have, but never quite click with. Until Blackberry and Bay. Not jammy. Not sweet jelly over toast sickliness. Truly fresh, straight from the vine, purple AND greenness. Wafts of fresh, but not jammed up berries and a lingering clean green scent. Crisp and yummy.

This smells absolutely wonderful, the grapefruit was a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting any grapefruit. This is a fresh, clean, fruity fragrance that I absolutely love to smell. The only problem is it is almost like scented air. It is VERY delicately fragranced so be prepared to have to put on a good 10 sprays. I only have a sample of this so I had to dab it on from the vial and you don't get good staying power that way but I used half of the whole vial putting on several layers on my wrist and back of my hand. This is similar to Nectarine Blossom and Honey in how you really have to give yourself a good heavy spraying to be able to smell it much or for very long. This isn't heavily scented like, say, Pomegranate Noir or Lime, Basil and Mandarine. Jo Malone's fragrances, while all cologne, vary greatly in scent strength and lasting power. Some are as strong as EDPs and others are as light an an eau fraiche. This is closer to an eau fraiche (for me at least). But this scent is so nice it is worth going through a bottle rather quickly if you can afford it. It is wonderful!

This fragrance is a must have, if you want something that smells a little different, has character, while being fresh, fruity, earthy, but pretty and atmospheric. I say atmospheric because Blackberry and Bay definitely sets a mood, without bearing the usual traits of such perfumes - amber or patchouli. This fragrance achieves it all without being sharp or synthetic.

It would suit someone who likewise prefers natural, comforting scents. I like how it is described as "innocent" and "brambly" because it definitely has a purity and richness to it. The trick with this Malone fragrance however, is allowing it to settle. I liked how it started off with a burst of flavour, but was concerned that its citrine notes might see it sour - but alas, the complete opposite happened. It warmed into a sunlight on the woods fragrance, sunlight streaming through an open forest cottage window, the air traced with these beautiful aromas, still keeping to its cornerstones of blackberry and bay, but growing more nuanced and delicious - there's a herbal-like quality which enhances its appeal and the moodiness of it - moody in an uplifting but mysterious sense. In my mind, it's still a darker scent, but without any potency in the way the Dior femme fatales do (Hypnotic Poison, Midnight Poison etc).

Overall, the quality lends itself to a feeling of adventure, yet being cosy on a couch reading a giant old novel. Of winding antique staircases to turreted rooms, old galleons floating off into the night aboard which stands a long haired woman in the night breeze - it's rustling through her blouse, her hair, this scent upon it. There is an old charm to B & B, bringing to mind a renaissance woman, or a gypsy, wagon and smoke in the woods, secret trails through the forest, autumn, dead leaves, patchwork, a basket of berries, drying rain. Smoke on the distant air as morning breaks. A twig cracks underfoot.

... It's magical.

Finally purchased a bottle of this after sampling. This works exceptionally well on my skin. It opens fresh and green, a promise of meadows and rain. Then the blackberry appears, sweet and tart. On my skin, the blackberry smells authentic to a fresh berry, no jammy smell. Only lovely fresh blackberry amid the green and now woody notes. The best word to describe this is brambley. It is like you are immersed in a blackberry bramble, so you get the green leaves, sweet fruit, and woody notes from the bush. This lasts and lasts on me and I get whiff after whiff all day long. It is truly a joyful fragrance and I will love wearing it. Already received compliments.

The first half hour of this is incredible - ripe blackberries on the vine, green leaves, and thorny vines. I was in love. Then the sweet deliciousness faded away into a soft powdery unisex aftershave scent. Talk about disappointing. By an hour later there was nothing left but a vague whisper of unidentifiable powdery scent.

The best thing I can do with it is put it on at bedtime to enjoy in the 15-20 minutes before I fall asleep.

Think of very ripe blackberries, almost bursting with ripeness.
There is a strong note of green to these blackberries. No syrupy sweetness is in sight. Mildly citrusy as well and a touch of what smells like vetiver (according to my friend because I don't know what vetiver smells like).

Longevity: 3-6 hours range.

Verdict: Nice.

I was so very excited about this on paper, these beautiful changing aromatic blackberries, that I bought a bottle without even trying it on my skin.

Well, luckily I had been given a small sample of the stuff along with my purchase. That's the one I sprayed on my skin when getting home. I swear, I get such a nasty musky aquatic men's cologne vibe, think expired blue Nautica Sport of some kind and even worse!! I cannot comprehend what is going on, but I am sure happy I did not open the box for the big bottle!!! It makes me feel super sick to my stomach (had to make ginger tea!!) and this baby is going back to the store faster than it took to buy it. And that was fast!!

I must be the only person in the world that gets this from this perfume!!! Seriously. Ugh. This has never happened before and up until now, I secretly did not believe in "personal chemistry" that much... well now I'm a believer!

EDIT I get the same nasty smell from the scent sprayed on my shirt, so maybe it is my nose that highly dislikes this???

A berry-scented flower in a used t-shirt?

Blackberry & Bay opens with very fresh bittersweet and sour dark berries. They are not true to life blackberries, but they don't exactly smell artificial either. They smell like a fruity flower that has a berryish aroma.

Projection and longevity are both good. Longevity is excellent for Jo Malone, right up there with Pomegranite Noir.

Blackberry & Bay is warm, bitter, green and fruity. There is a tiny bit of soapiness under the berries.

As it develops on my skin, the fresh soap element amplifies and the berries seem to ripen, though they quickly begin to lose any distinctive "berry" character. The resulting aroma reminds me of smelling the armpits of a t-shirt to determine whether it can hold out for one more wearing before laundering.

B&B doesn't actually smell like body odor, but it does smell a little like fabric softener mixed with an odd earthy-sweet "ripeness". This continues through the dry down.

The un-naturally fresh, meets the naturally ripe.
I wonder how this would layer with Febreeze...

Blackberry and Bay smells the way not-quite-ripe blackberries taste when you pick them: tart and juicy, and carrying with it the greenness of the leaves and vines. There's a savoury dryness in the base, which I suppose is the bay. It wears close to the skin and works well at the very end of winter, when you are longing for the vitality of new vegetation. All in all, surprisingly interesting and appealing.

I have a tester and am enjoying it enough to contemplate buying a small bottle.

Lovely Malone although fairly disappointing of one really hopes for berries... Well, the top notes do have blackberry... and the first impression is indeed wonderful. Sadly the berries dissipate very quickly, in a matter of minutes. Then I smell citrus, soft , floral, delicate woods. Kind of like the Micallef's Pomelos. If you like that one, guaranteed you'll love this. And then the bay leaf.. yes, the scent steers towards Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria Laurier-Reglisse.
The drydown is rather unisex, dry cedar, a little sweetness, indefinite slightly musky herbal tea. The silage is quite close to skin, the lasting power fairly good.
Overall I like it very much, I think it will be wonderful an refreshing for summer time...it's sunny scent, smooth and youthful... I see it working for chic sporty lady or a handsome man!

I bought a phial of this and for me the initial blast of citrus and woody notes is gorgeous but it so quickly fades into a beautiful after-shave smell (which isn't a problem to my nose) but sadly it then just fades entirely simply too quickly. Even if it was a linear scent all the way I'd love it so much but the price of JM to enjoy such a fleeting joy I'm afraid I'll regrettably have to forego a purchase.
And I am sad about it, because that amazing crisp dryness at first is so addictive!

Oh! the beginning is quite fresh and delightful.

It's already gone in a few moments but that opening combination with the grapefruit actually reminds me of the stems of tomatoes broken off from the vine.

I wanted to love this so bad! On paper it smells so sparkly and invigorating! It's like walking barefoot through a misty garden on a cool, late summer morning. To me this fragrance is interpretation of a shivering sensation from cold, wet ground that passes through the body and a whiff of spiced berries in the dark green, misty background. On paper this fragrance is a delight! On my skin it turned into a soapy, "typical" pink, rather sweet scent. It's not unpleasant but I expected more. It has a fair longevity but silage is no more than 3 inches. I will definitely test this further in cooler weather.

I had such high hopes for this, as I adore blackberries.Unfortunately, this is one of the few fragrances that I don't like at all. I expected at least some degree of sweetness, but although I got a hint of fresh blackberry leaves, I have yet to smell a single berry! The pungent bay leaves or should I say BAY LEAVES are overwhelming, drowning out the nice blackberry leaf aroma. There is a bitter, "off" smell that I can't put my finger on, sour and medicine-y, like old deodorant.

How peculiar- but there are no bay notes in the note list!
I have mixed feelings about this one. It has a very strong blackberry smell, no doubt. So strong and realistic, it's almost edible. The bay leaf gives a lovely woody and spicy accord softened by floral overtones and made rounder by vetiver in the base..
It is the only one blackberry fume that had retained the original bitter fruitiness of blackberry from the time you spray it till it's gone a few hours later. A very original floral fruity, and I think that lovers of blackberry must really look into getting it..or at least trying it to discover how blackberry perfection i a bottle can smell like.

And there's the sun, the fields, and the air is fresh and dewy. What was it in the ad, again? A woman, a child, rubber boots, nature... and hands, so full of berries. No lie there, I've got it all.

Oooohooo, soohooo fantastic Kate Bush's "Lovely Bertie" comes to mind. This wonderful blend of radiant bursting berry freshness - the exuberance of a young mother doting over her first born contrapuncted by the elegance and timelessness of a Renaissance galliard... bay, cedar and vetiver. BAY is the heart, its contre-danse with the fruity sweet softness of the berry, this is like reading a Shakesperean romance while your mum cooks jam in the kitchen, and the late summer air wafts through the window on a sunny afternoon... Enticing, timeless heavenly autumny and melancholic yet promising the return of light with a cheerful pamplemousse. This works well on my skin, just needs to be reapplied throughout the day. ...."you bring me so much joy and then you bring me....more joy!"

I really like this! it has a real nice && fresh lively zing to it && funny I just feel clean wearing it. The SA @ Nord's had me sample this when I was pruchasing my pom. noir so I sprayed it on the top of my hand at first I got a real green smell which I was like ok thats kinda nice then as it startled to settle the blackberry && grapefruit came through, mmmm! seems I love Jo's fruitier scents so far I have nectarine blossom, pom noir, now I want this! The SA gave me a sample of this w/ my purchase sad thing is mine was broken :( but there was just enough left to get a full body test. Even though I think most ppl don't like the fact of Jo Malone's only comin in 1 && 3.4oz but if you figure fragrances do go bad so think it's nice just to have a collection of 1.0'z && only get the larger if you absolutely love it! && will wear it all the time but if your a perfume freak && have many to alternate b/t just go for a smaller, if you run out you can always get another or decide to uprgrade. I was going to trade in my smaller bottle of pom noir && pay the extra b/c I haven't used it, then I figured why spend 60 more for a diff size when I can use that to buy a whole nother fragrance, this!! <3 :)

I got my hands on a sample of this last week to try -- ok, I'm a guy trying out a "women's" fragrance, chuckle if you must. I was initially excited in the prospect of a Blackberry fragrance since deep fruits tend to sit well on me.

This did not. At all. Once it settled in, I came to recognize why most of the Jo Malone line doesn't work for me and this scent especially. A whiff of this once sprayed on skin and I had the distinct impression of celery.

Yes, you read correctly. Celery. No discernible blackberry, not really as much fragrant bay leaf, just the straight up smell of celery, stalky and green. Horrid! Was there a redeeming quality about it? Sure. Longevity is weak, so it drifted away on me quickly enough, although any time spent with this seemed an eternity. The bottom line is that this definitely has a 'garden' vibe to it, but entirely the wrong garden for me unless I were a rabbit.

So much like Lalique's Amethyst I almost didn't buy it. But then, Amethyst was 5 years ago, so I went ahead and indulged myself. I love this as a fall fragrance. It is more subtle than Amethyst and less sweet. The frutiness dries down to a calmer woodiness, the cedar, I guess. Definitely could be worn by men as well as women.

A lovely addition to the Jo Malone range. Initially, I get a huge burst of blackberry, but after 20 minutes this mellows and the bay notes shine through.

Just purchased this and rather than restate what Dresden Doll said let me just say that I totally agree with her review. This is shockingly fruity. Yay!! More in line with Nectarine Blossom & Honey than English Pear & Freesia or Pomegranate Noir. I was hesitant to try because Jo Malone's fruity scents can be misleading and rather dark and on the heavy side. This is very fruity...grapefruit zing and sweet blackberry jam. The dry down is gorgeous!!! I love vetiver & cedar base notes and this is surprisingly still blackberry at the end. This is heavenly for fall!!!

btw...the body cream is divine!!! As with all JM scents it helps to layer to make them last longer!!

I received a sample of this from Jo Malone in their FB giveaway.
This is such a delightful fragrance. I wasn't expecting to like it so much actually.
Without meaning to buy into the ad campaign too much, it does remind me of blackberry picking in August as a child, and making warm blackberry syrup to pour over vanilla ice cream.
It opens with tart grapefruit, which really emulates the tart aroma the berries have. It's like the smell you get when you stand close to a lot of blackberry bushes - the vetiver may contribute to this, but I can't say that I particularly smell it. The blackberry then gushes in and is so true I was surprised. Slightly bitter, fruity, aromatic. The floral notes soften it in the dry-down, but it does remain clearly a blackberry scent, now a bit sweeter and floral, rather than the aromatic opening. As much as I appreciate how realistic the opening is, it is the lovely squashed berry dry down that is the best to me. It's like setting in to the ice cream and blackberry syrup on a late summers day, relaxing as the scent of flowers passes by on the breeze.
This is the kind of treatment I wanted of Pomegranate Noir, which turned too spicy and lost the fruitiness.
You'd have to spray a bit to get much sillage as this stays close to the skin, staying power OK, about 5 hours. A must try for blackberry lovers.
EDIT: Revisited this recently and was shocked by the difference I noticed in projection and staying power. Two concentrated sprays gave me really good sillage and lasted from 11.30 am until 11pm that night.
