Scents of Time as a Company started when we originally contacted RMS Titanic in Atlanta after reading in January 2001 that a complete bag of perfumes had been found in the debris field of Titanic and that when the submersible placed the bag on the mother ship it literally smelled of roses! The bag’s story is as follows:

Adolphe Saalfeld originally hailed from near Leipzig in Germany, but settled near Manchester in England. A chemist by trade, he diversified into perfumery, and decided to seek his fortune in America, boarding RMSTitanic with his bag of samples. Adolphe travelled first class return ticket, numbered 19988 and costing thirty pounds and ten shillings. for cabin C-106 aboard the White Star liner. Here is a note from his diary:

“I just had an hour’s roaming about on this wonderful boat. I liked my cabin very much – it’s just like a bed-sitting room and rather large. They are still busy to finish the last things on board.”

Adolphe survived the sinking of Titanic, and was rescued by the Carpathia some hours later on Lifeboat number three. But his leather bag containing two wallets with over sixty phials of assorted fragrances and essential oils, went two and a half miles down to the Atlantic bottom.

Adolphe’s bag plunged to the ocean floor taking over ninety years to be re-discovered. RMS Titanic Inc. were salvaging in the debris field when the claw of the small submersible, which took four hours to gain the ocean floor, grabbed a leather bag to bring to the surface.

In a secret warehouse location near Detroit the bag of samples were examined and restored by a team from Eastern Michigan University, and Scents of Time were called in to take over the recovery process by sampling the phials.

Scents of Time brought this ocean treasure back home to the UK to examine with sophisticated apparatus – gas layer chromatographs and a mass spectrometer. A combination of the nose of an experienced perfumer and the “aromaprint” thus captured allowed an exact copy of the aroma of what we called “Rosa Maris”- the rose of the sea., which was tempered a little for modern tastes without altering the aromatic senation.

"Our Star ship sped into the night for three decades in hopeful flight. A star named Gliese* was its goal. Positioned in the Libran fold its planet named 581d was marked for human colony a goldilocks for life we’re told. It’s not too hot and not too cold. This third rock from a great red sun was where the fate of mankind hung since life existed on this world and rich perfume about it swirled as fragrance from an Asterose gave sweet contentment to the nose and now we need no more to roam for we had found an Earthlike home."

David Pybus Aromancer *pronounced “GLEE ZA”

Night Star is a celebration of bouquet aromas which has a floral heart consisting of rose blended with violet and Lily of the Valley (Muguet) broadened by citrus and herbal notes whilst simultaneously deepened by an embracing combination of woody notes with a suffusion of powdery vanilla and Mayflower.

Created by perfumer Christopher Sheldrake, formerly of Givaudan SA, now with Chanel.

Night Star Fragrance Reviews

To qualify this as simply a rose scent is a terrible injustice! It opens with the bright citrusy bergamot and delicate lily of the valley then blends seamlessly into an intoxicating rose tempered by violet, sweetened and enriched by hawthorn, heliotrope and vanilla then cradled by sandalwood.

It’s unconventional and quite captivating. It’s not a scent I would expect to encounter often due to the unusual elements from a different time that aren’t mainstream/common these days.

As for when to wear it, it’s a bright uplifting spring or summer daytime type of scent with a deeper full heart that isn’t casual but wouldn’t fall into the elegant category either. I couldn’t see someone past their 40’s wearing this as it has a tart fresh note that speaks of youth/naivety and daydreams.

I think the "rosa maris" the fragrance is based on is probably just a title given to the scent that's left when a number of vials have broken, others turned rancid or reacted some unknown way to the pressure under the sea etc. It would explain why the fragrance also needed to be toned down somewhat. (At least I hope so!)

I'm a little confused about this whole convoluted story and premise about "the reproduction of a Titanic scent" , when in fact the actual final product "Night Star" is not after all an authentic reproduction at all (???).
In fact, from what I've gathered the only thing they actually share is a central rose note.

It is indeed a beautul fragrance. I get the middle florals strongly . It's sillage is very good as I am writing having only just got it it's getting deeper and I can smell a touch of the vanilla.

This is very beautiful feminine fragrance and its available in USA at You can even order a sample before you buy it. There is a holiday promotion going on right now, so its a good chance to try it. I personally love this!!!! Its actually was inspired by the samples they found on the Titanic a few years ago. The base for this fragrance is a very rare Rose, and it does smell like a flower from another planet!!!
